Scene 34

 A Ghost of a Chance
OLTL: 10/14/03, 10/15/03, 10/16/03 & 10/17/03

Tuesday, October 14, 2003

In Angel Square, Marcie is sitting on the stone bench.  She is obviously sad.  Leaves blow around at her feet and she is staring down at her hands.  There are tears in her eyes.  Al appears in the mist and slowly comes into view.

Al's voice: Listen for me. I’ll be in the wind that moves the clouds across the moon when you look out your window, the wind that rustles the gold leaves across the sidewalk as you walk to class.

Al: Marcie.

At Bo’s apartment the phone rings and the answering machine picks up

Gabrielle's voice: You've reached Bo and Gabrielle. We aren't able to take your call, so please leave a message and we'll get back to you.

The answering machine beeps.

Bo: Hi. If you're there, please pick up the phone. Look, there's no pressure. I’m just talking about dinner. I really need to talk to you.

At St. James, Max and Gabrielle are sitting next to each in the sanctuary.  They are looking up at the altar. Max has his arm around her shoulders and she has her head resting on his chest.

Max: OK, God, what do I have to be thankful for? I’m thankful for my kids, and I’m thankful that Frankie and Leslie are living in a place that Luna loved. It's almost like she's there with them. And seeing Leslie's smile and hearing that cute little laugh of Frankie's, she's living on in them. How is Al going to live on? Oh.

Gabrielle: You want to know how he's going to live on? He's going to live on in you, and he's going to live on in me, and he's going to live on in all that music that he played at night and all the hope that he gave to all those people who listened to him, and in Marcie. Al's memory -- Max, it's never going to die.

Max: You're right. Where's your ring?

Gabrielle: I gave it back to Bo.

Max: What?

Gabrielle: I cannot think of anything except Al. Nothing, nothing else matters.

Max: Oh, Gabrielle. Bo loves you. And you love him. You can’t give up on that. I mean, to choose to be alone after losing Al is so -- so -- know that little voice...

Back in Angel Square, Marcie cannot believe what she is seeing.

Marcie: Is it -- is it really you?

Al: In the flesh. Well, not exactly in the flesh. You can’t touch me. But it's me.

Marcie: How?

Al: I’m all the things that you loved about me, all the things you held inside, the same way I always keep you inside of me.

Marcie: I've missed you so much. What am I supposed to do without you?

Al: I miss you, too, Marcie.

Marcie: Please don't leave me. Please, stay.

At St. James, Max and Gabrielle continue to try to comfort each other and to find some peace.

Max: So I’m sitting in Angel Square in front of the statue, and Luna appears to me.

Gabrielle: What?

Max: She -- she came to tell me Al was OK.

Gabrielle: OK?

Max: That he’s with her.

Gabrielle: Wow. Was that -- that must have been comforting. Was it comforting?

Max: It was. I mean, I still miss him like hell, but -- oh.

Gabrielle: Max, do you think that us losing Al like this is God's way of showing us that we have to pay for the atrocious lives that we've lived?

Max: No. No. I don't think God is that unfair.

Gabrielle: But what if that is the way all this works?

Max: No.

Gabrielle: If it is, then I don't deserve to be --

Max: Gabrielle --

Gabrielle: And I don't deserve Bo.

Max: No, don't, stop, stop. If you start thinking that way, you're going to regret everything you've ever done.

Gabrielle: But I do, Max. Dear God, I do.

Max: Think of what Al did for us.

Gabrielle: Mm-hmm.

Max: He made us better people. I know when you and he came back to Llanview, I finally got my act together, and God knows you did, too.

Gabrielle: Yeah. I did, didn't I?

Max: Yes, you did, so remember that. And you need to remember that you are the woman that Bo loves and the woman that Bo wants to marry, because of Al.

Gabrielle: Well, I’m going to do everything in my power to live the rest of my life in a way that Al would be proud. I am.

Max: Good.

Gabrielle: I don't know about staying here in Llanview, though, because it is so painful. Max, it is so painful here. And Bo is -- God, he's wonderful, but I don't know if I can stay with him, either.

Max: In the spirit of good deeds and in Al's name, I -- I picked up a couple tickets for that benefit tonight.

Gabrielle: For the new children's wing at the hospital? Al loved those kids, didn't he?

Max: Yeah. Yeah, I was just wondering if you might do me the honor.

Gabrielle: Max, no, I’m not up to it, and Bo would most certainly be there, and I’d probably knock down several hundred people running into his arms. I don't think so.

Max: So that could be a good thing.

Gabrielle: I don't think so.

Max: Please. I really think it would be good for us to spend some time around people that are happy.

At Angel Square, Marcie is frantically happy.

Al: Someday, I’ll get to hold you in my arms forever. But not today.

Marcie: No, don't leave me. Please.

Al: I won’t. I’m always with you, kid.

Marcie laughs at Al’s imitation.

Al: I love you so much, Marcie.

Al walks back into the mist.

At the diner, Marcie and Gabrielle are sitting in a booth.

Marcie: I’m OK. How about you?

Gabrielle: I've been better.

Carlotta walks over to them with Jamie in a stroller.

Carlotta: Somebody wanted to say hello to you. Jamie, this is Gabrielle and Marcie.

Gabrielle: Oh --

Carlotta: But I think she's falling asleep.

Gabrielle: Yes, she is. Hello, beauty. Oh. She's precious.

Wednesday, October 15, 2003

Max and Bo are at The Palace attending a charity event. They are dressed in tuxedos.

Bo: Hey, Max.

Max: Hey.

Bo: Have you seen Gabrielle?

Max: Yeah. Yeah, I was -- actually I was with her earlier at St. James. I invited her tonight, but she wasn't up to it.

Bo: She afraid she'd see me?

Max: I didn't say that.

Bo: You didn't have to.

At the diner, Gabrielle is sitting alone in a booth.  River walks in and goes to the counter.  Gabrielle spots him and sees that he’s wearing Al’s jacket and freaks out (as well she should).

River: Hey, Mrs. Vega. I need to talk to you.

Gabrielle: You've got my son's jacket on!

River: At the --

Gabrielle: Why do you have his jacket on? Get it off!

River: What are you --

Gabrielle: It's not yours! Get that jacket off!

River: Hey, wait!

Gabrielle: Get it off! Get it off!

Gabrielle pulls the jacket off of River.

At Foxy Roxy’s, Roxy dispenses her own brand of advice to Kelly who is getting her hair fixed.

Roxy: Honey, you know, I just want you to know I'm a real good listener. I know tons about relationships because I've had tons. And I've been married a couple times, so, you know, you can just lay it out on me.

Kelly: Oh, Kevin and I are fine. Really, we're actually wonderful. As a matter of fact, we're talking about adopting a baby.

Roxy: You know, maybe you should adopt hers because this loser knocked her up, and, you know, I don't think she's going to be able to take care of a kid.

Kelly: I'll mention it to my husband.

Ron walks in.

Ron: Excuse me. I'm looking for Roxy Balsom.

Roxy: Hey, kiddo, are your jeans so tight that the blood flow is not going to your brain?

Ron: I'm sorry?

Roxy: It's me, Roxy.

Ron: Oh, my god. You look different.

Roxy: I looked disgusting the other day. Nigel had me in that plain-Jane getup, but this is the real me.

Ron: Yeah, very real. So, I came by to pick up the keys for the apartment upstairs.

Roxy: Oh, yeah, sure. Anything you want. Why don't you two squawk it up for a while. I'll be right back.

Ron: Ok.

Kelly: Kelly Buchanan.

Ron: Ron Walsh.

Kelly: Nice to meet you.

Ron: Nice to meet you.

Kelly: Are you new in town?

Ron: Actually, I'm here to visit my sister, Marcie. She's going through a tough time right now. Her boyfriend just died.

Kelly: Oh. Walsh.

Ron: Yeah.

Kelly: You're Marcie’s brother.

Ron: She's my little sister.

Kelly: God, it's terrible what happened to Al. I was wondering how she's doing.

Ron: Yeah, well, al's death hit everyone pretty hard, but Marcie -- she pretty much lived for that guy.

Back at the diner, Gabrielle continues her meltdown.

Gabrielle: You stole my son's jacket!

River: His girlfriend gave it to me. Her name is Marcie!

Gabrielle: You liar!

River: No, she gave me a bunch of music, too. I'm a big fan. I organized the candlelight vigil in Angel Square. That was me.

Gabrielle: Oh, god. I'm so sorry. Oh, I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. I'm so sorry.

River: No, it's ok, it's ok. I probably shouldn't have accepted it.

Gabrielle: No. Forgive me. You keep it. You keep it. Keep it.

River: No, look, I think -- I think you should have this.

Gabrielle: No, no, I -- I couldn't. You know, I insist you keep it.

River: Your son was a really great guy. He was like my idol. Ok? Some of the stuff that he said on the air was really right on.

Gabrielle: Yeah. Please forgive me. I'm sorry.

River: See you later.

River walks away and Gabrielle clutches the jacket to her chest and buries her face in it.

At The Palace, Max and Bo continue their conversation.

Bo: Gabrielle's put, like, a wall between us. She canceled our engagement. She's moved back in here to the hotel.

Max: I know, and I'm really sorry.

Bo: I hardly even see her now. And when I see her, she can barely look at me.

Max: You know, she said she was going to be going to the diner. She's probably still there.

Bo: Yeah, but she says she needs some space, and I think I have to respect that, because I don't want her to pull back even further. Otherwise, she's going to be out of sight.

Max: Listen, it's your call, but if you ask me, I really don't think she should be alone right now.

At the diner, Bo approaches Gabrielle, who is still clutching Al’s jacket to her chest and crying.

Bo: Mind if I join you?

Gabrielle: Oh, I was just going to leave.

Bo: Honey, honey -- I know Max invited you to that Charity Benefit tonight, but how about going with me?

Gabrielle: Oh --

Bo: We could dance for a little bit, you know, just get away from things.

Gabrielle: A crowd of people -- I couldn’t.

Bo: Yeah.

Gabrielle: When they have nice things to say, I don't know what to say.

Bo: Yeah. Because it reminds you of what you've lost. I know. How about if we just go somewhere, just you and me, ok? Look, I know how it feels, ok, and maybe I can help you if you'd just let me.

Gabrielle: Sorry. I got to go.

Gabrielle rushes out of the diner.

Later, Max walks into the diner.  Bo is sitting in a booth alone.  Max joins him.

Max: Hey.

Bo: Hi.

Max: I came by to check on Gabrielle. Looks like we both missed her.

Bo: She was here.

Max: You two talk?

Bo: A little. But she was upset and just took off.

Max: Hmm. Do you have any idea where she might have gone?

Bo: She had one of Al's jackets, though. It had the Voice of the Night logo on the back. Could've gone after her, but, you know, I'm worried, Max. I don't want to make things worse.

Max: I'm sorry, Bo.

Bo: Well, I'm going to go back over to The Palace. As Commissioner of Police, you got to -- got to make an appearance.

Max: Yeah.

Bo: Hey, thanks for trying to help.

Max: Yeah.

At Al’s dorm room, Max finds Gabrielle sitting on his bed and trying to sort through some things.

Gabrielle: Max. What are you doing here?

Max: Ran into Bo at the diner. He told me about the jacket. Said you weren't doing too hot. I just kind of figured you'd be here going through the rest of Al's stuff.

Gabrielle: This is our son's life. This is our little boy's life all packed up in boxes. All has to be out by Friday because they have another student coming in. And then all traces of Al will be gone.

Max: Not the traces that matter. Too many people love him.

Gabrielle: What are we going to do with all these boxes? There's so many boxes.

Max: Oh, Gabrielle.

Gabrielle: I can't stop thinking about him. I can't let go.

Max: I know. You don't have to.

Gabrielle: I do. I mean, Bo thinks I should. But how can I? He was my lifeline. If I let go of him, I'm going to fall. Max, I'm going to fall so deep, and I'm going to keep falling. I'm going to keep falling. I'm never going to stop.

Max: You just hang on to me. I won't let you fall.

Thursday, October 16, 2003

At Foxy Roxy’s, Roxy is sizing up Ron and decorating for Natalie’s bachelorette party.

Ron: Well -- oh. Faucet's working fine now.

Roxy: You know, you're real good with that wrench.

Ron: Well, if it acts up again, let me know, ok?

Roxy: My place -- maybe you could look at the plumbing?

Ron: Yeah, sure. Ok. But not now. I told Marcie I'd meet her, all right?

Roxy: Sure, ok.

Ron: All right. I'll see you around.

Roxy: (checks out Ron’s buns) Yeah, not if I see you first.

Ron: Ok.

Roxy: (whistles) Not if I see you first.

Rex walks into Foxy Roxy’s as Ron leaves.

Rex: Oh, I did not need this image.

Roxy: Oh, yeah, you ought to talk, chasing your ex. You know, she's married, by the way.

Rex: Yeah, which is exactly why Jen should have stayed with me. Ok. Later.

Roxy: Hey, hey, hey! Excuse me, but I've been working my butt off here. What do you think? It's fantabulous, huh?

Rex: You've really outdone yourself.

Roxy: Natalie's going to love this.

The rooftop of the Hunk Hotel has been decorated for Natalie and Cris’s engagement party.

Marcie: Hi, Jen. Where's Joe?

Jen: Oh, he's at St. James still. I didn't think you'd be here.

Marcie: I didn't plan to, but, you know, Al would want me to be here.

Jen: Yeah, you're right. Al would want you to move on with your life.

Marcie: Um, excuse me. There's my brother. I'll be right back.

Viki: This is an absolutely wonderful party.

Carlotta: Thank you.

Natalie: And to think I was sitting here worried about involving both the families in this.

Cristian: Look at how it all turned out.

Natalie: Thank you so much.

Carlotta: Oh, you're welcome.

Viki: Kelly. Is Kevin running late again?

Kelly: Yeah, yeah, he's just stuck in a meeting. No, I'm sure he'll be here as soon as he can tear himself away.

Marcie and Ron dance.  Joey approaches them.

Joey: Hey, you two can really dance.

Marcie: Oh, yeah, well, he taught me everything I know.

Ron: Yeah, when she was five. So anyway, Marcie’s been telling me how tired she is of me saying that she should be, I guess, around people who care about her.

Joey: Helping?

Marcie: It must be because I'm not feeling alone. You know, I think I'm ready to move back into my dorm room.

Joey: Well, we're happy to have you staying with us.

Jen: Yeah, for as long as you like, really.

Marcie: You know what, you guys have been great, but you're newlyweds and you need your privacy.

Ron: If you guys will excuse me, I'm going to go in for some of that famous flan.

Marcie: Oh, yeah? Well, I'm right behind you.

Ron: Ok.

Joey: So, Antonio was telling me about some bachelor party they're going to throw.

Jen: Yeah? Where?

Joey: I don't really know all the details, but I might be a little late.

Jen: Ok. Have fun.

Kelly: Nice of you to drop ...

Kevin: Oh, I'm sorry, honey. Just lost track of time.

Kelly: Mind telling me what was so important that you were going to miss your sister's rehearsal dinner?

Kevin: Nothing. I just, you know, got into something.

Kelly: Nothing your secretary knew about.

Kevin: I went to see Walker.

Kelly: About Blair? Kevin, it's amazing how Blair has survived this long, you know, raised two kids without you around to protect her.

Kevin: Well, Laurence wasn't in the picture before.

Kelly: Yeah. And the nerve of that guy, huh? To love her, even want to marry her? I mean, jeez Louise, if it hadn't been for you stepping in, they might even end up happy.

Antonio: All right, gentlemen, time to go. Let's go.

Cristian: What are you talking about, man?

Antonio: It's your last night as a single man.

Bo: Come on, man. Got to make the most of it.

Cristian: Wait, wait, a bachelor party? You got to be kidding.

Antonio: No, we're not. Let's go.

Roxy: Yo, listen up, everyone. The superior sex is moving on to Foxy Roxy's.

Natalie: What is going on?

Jessica: You'll see. Let's go.

Everyone heads for the door and Natalie approaches Jen.

Natalie: Ok, give me one second. Jen, listen, if you don't want to go to this -- whatever it is that they're doing -- you don't have to come. I mean, I just don't want you to feel like you need to be there.

Jen: Don't worry. I didn't plan on it.

Natalie: Ok.

Kevin: Look, you're right, all right? I shouldn't have gone to Laurence’s. I'll -- I'll keep my distance from now on.

Kelly: You mean it?

Kevin: I give you my word.

Jessica: Kelly? You coming?

Natalie’s eyes are closed as she is led into Foxy Roxy’s by Viki.

Viki: Ok. Now you can open your eyes.

All: Surprise!

Natalie: How did you do all of this?

Viki: Well, I tell you what, it was your sister's idea, but Roxanne planned the whole party.

Roxy: Yeah, and your brother -- he brought the kegs, and the beer is officially tapped.

All: Whoo!

Roxy: Oh, oh, oh -- wait a minute, wait a minute. Something even better. Excuse me.

Flash: Oh. What is she up to?

Roxy: Cristian is the stripper.

Roxy drags out a life size cut out of a hunk with Cris’ face pasted on it.

Flash: Oh, no!

Roxy: Yes! Ok, all right. Each of the girls gets asked a question, and when they give the right answer, they get to strip off a piece of cloth. So who's first?

Jen walks into Ultra Violet and bumps into Rex.

Rex: So, you weren't invited to the bride's party?

Jen: Oh, watch Natalie get showered with gifts? No, thank you.

Rex: Well, you could be a stripper at the bachelor party.

Jen: The party's here?

Rex: Yeah. If you'd like, I could put you in a cake and you could jump out.

Jen: I got to go. Can I go out the back?

At Foxy Roxy’s, Roxy is presenting Natalie with a gift.

Roxy: Wait till you see this.

Natalie opens the box and pulls out a sheer red shorty nightgown.

Natalie: Now, how did I ever --

All: Whoo!

Natalie: Live without this?

Roxy: Baby, you haven't lived till you've worn that.

Flash: That looks like it's more for Cristian.

Jessica: Well, let's get a married woman's opinion of this. Kelly? What do you think?

Nora: Come on, go, go, go, go, go!

Flash: Woo-woo!

Roxy: Some expert advice here.

Kelly: Let's see.

Kelly holds up the nightgown in front of her and prances around.  Ron walks in. And everyone cheers.

Roxy: Well, why don't we ask Ron what he thinks?

Ron: Whoa, whoa. I don't think I should be here. Look, I forgot you were doing this. I just came by to drop off these keys and check on that pipe if that's ok.

Kelly: Uh-huh.

Marcie: Ok, come on. Bye, Ron.

All: Bye-bye!

Flash: Nighty-night!

It is Natalie and Cristian’s big day--their wedding.  St. James is decorated for the wedding.  Max is sitting in a pew staring at the altar.  Nora walks over to him.

Nora: Hey. What's going on? How's it going?

Max: Al should be here.

Nora: Well, maybe he is, Max. You know, if you ever need anybody, just want to talk -- whatever -- lean on me. We're here.

Max: Actually, I'm thinking about leaving town. There's really nothing to keep me here now.

Bo joins Max and Nora.  Gabrielle hovers in the background.

Bo: Hello.

Nora: Hi.

Bo: Mind if we join you?

Nora: Do you mind?

Max: No, not at all. I'm glad you could come.

Gabrielle: I'm glad that Bo convinced me. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and light a candle for Al.

Gabrielle rushes away.

Bo: Excuse me, too. I'll be back.

Nora: Ok.

At Llanfair, the wedding reception is in full swing.  Rex bumps into Jen on the patio.

Rex: Boy, the Buchanan’s sure go all out for their kiddies. But you already know about that. I guess your wedding was just like this. Of course, I wasn't invited.

Jen: I'm going in.

Jen walks into the living room and sees Marcie.

Marcie: Hey.

Jen: Hey.

Marcie: You having fun?

Jen: Sure.

Rex: Marcie.

Marcie: Rex.

Rex walks away.  Marcie looks around the room and calls out quietly for Al.

Marcie:  Al? Al?

Al appears.

Al: I'm right here.

Marcie: I knew you were close by.

They walk out onto the patio.

Al: I'm watching out for you.

Marcie: The wedding was really beautiful, but I kept imagining that it was us.

Al: Well, our souls are married. They always have been, always will be.

Gabrielle comes out onto the patio and spots Marcie.

Gabrielle: Oh, I'm sorry, I -- I didn't realize there was anybody out here. I'm sorry. Whoops.

Gabrielle approaches Marcie.

Gabrielle: Al's gone and I -- you know, Marcie, how do you join back in again? You're joining back in? I can’t. I just can’t.

Gabrielle rushes off.

Marcie: Why can't she see you?

Al: I don't know. Maybe it'd make things harder for her.

Marcie: For me, it makes it bearable.

Al: I'm always going to be here, Marcie.

In the living room, Gabrielle rushes over to Bo.

Gabrielle: Bo, I have to go. I thought I could do this.

Bo: I'll go with you.

Gabrielle: No, you stay.

Gabrielle: Stay.

A heartbroken Gabrielle leaves.
