Scene 40 What Goes Around... Friday, December 5, 2003 At the police station, Jen has just finished making a statement to the police about what happened in the hotel room when the music box killer struck again. Several people are at the station, including Joey, Lindsay, Rex, John, Evangeline, Daniel, Bo, Nora and Marcie. Lindsay indicates that Jen and Joey really need to talk. Jen: Actually, I really want to talk privately. Joey: I want to talk, too. You've got to help me understand all this. Jen: No, I mean I need to talk to my mom. Joey: I guess I'll see you at home, then. I'll go check on my mom. Thanks, anyway, Lindsay. Lindsay: Sure. Rex smiles at Evangeline. Rex: Hey, what do you say we have lunch, celebrate? Evangeline: What, you think you were that close to death row? Rex: No. I think you like the decor of Capricorn. Evangeline: You could be right. Hmm. John buttonholes Daniel. John: You know what I really like about you? When you screw up, you're able to do it so public. Daniel: Agent McBain, is there a problem? John: Advertising to the media that we have an eyewitness in the last music box murder? Daniel: I tell you what -- you handle the FBI's part in the investigation and I’ll run the DA's office. John: Ok. And when the killer chokes the life out of that girl who was just in here, you can explain who tipped him off next time you trying to hustle her mom into the sack. Daniel leaves. John approaches Marcie who is working at her desk. John: Hey. Marcie: Hi. John: You can't mention to anyone that Jen Buchanan was in here talking to us. Marcie: Oh, no, I never talk about work when I leave. John: You can't mention it to anyone, Marcie. Marcie: You mean especially to my brother Ron, the suspect. John: Nothing personal, but a leak could be life or death for your friend. Marcie: Oh, yeah, I get it. Hey -- you know, I’m really grateful that you got Ron released. He is innocent, you know. I got to run to class. See you later. John: See you later. Marcie leaves. John approaches Nora and Bo. John: How'd you guys ever survive a DA like Colson? Nora: We haven't survived him yet. John: We got a psycho out there, and he's already murdered five women. If Jen Buchanan's name gets out, I think she's six. John: So all the victims were taking college courses. Bo: And they were all missing their student IDs. Nora: He's collecting souvenirs. John: And they're all dancers or they were studying to be dancers, or so we think. What I want to know is, how did he know they were all students? Bo: Well, if this guy is still in Llanview, you think we should alert the university? John: Elyssa Collins didn't go to Llanview. She went to Groodon. But the odds are higher he's got his eye on LU. You know what? You loan me a couple of undercovers, you know, maybe a couple young guys who could pose as students on campus? Bo: Yeah, we could do that. John: Good deal. I'm going to go set it up with the university, all right? Bo: All right. John leaves. Nora: He's right about Colson, you know. Bo: Yeah, send Gonzalez and Hardy in, please. Nora: Do you know that he's dating Lindsay Rappaport? Bo: Who, Colson? Nora: Yeah. Bo: No. You know, he's desperate, so in a way, they make a perfect couple. Nora: Yeah, well, I mean, how low do you have to go? I mean, you start tampering with a material witness' mother? Bo: Ahem. You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were jealous. At the LU student union, Jessica is talking to another student. She is trying to find information for her article on sexual harassment. Jessica: Why didn't you tell somebody that Professor Barnes hit on you? Woman: I can’t. I gave in to him. My grades are lousy, and if my family knows -- they'll hate it if I flunk out. Jessica: But the university will protect you. You can go to the Ethics Committee. Woman: No. I'm not bringing charges. Marcie: Is everything ok? Jessica: Yeah, it was just one of Professor Barnes' victims. She's scared to death. Marcie: Hey, you know what? The radio station has asked me to start a talk show in honor of Al. Maybe you could come on as a guest, we can talk about this. Jessica: Yeah -- but I haven't had -- don't have my story together yet, but I’ll call you, ok? Marcie: Ok. Jessica: Ok. Marcie: Great. Thanks, Jess. Al walks up to Marcie. Al: Hey. Marcie. Marcie: Hi. At the police station, Nora asks a loaded question of Bo. Nora: So, do you think our DA is dating Lindsay to find out if her daughter's holding back information that she didn't tell John McBain? At the student union, Marcie defends John. Marcie: No, I'm serious. Your brother -- he's really a great guy. He got my brother Ron released. Al: If you say so. Al’s pager beeps. He groans Al: That's the hospital. I got to go call. Marcie: Bye. Al leaves. Maddi-Evil (Madison) approaches Marcie. Maddi-Evil: Well, if it isn't Miss Piggy. Slept in any garbage lately? Marcie: Madison, what are you doing here? You got expelled. Maddi-Evil: My parents made sure I got reinstated. Was that Michael McBain you were just talking to? Marcie: What's it to you? Maddi-Evil: Not much. Before Deke and I started dating, Michael and I used to sleep together Monday, December 8, 2003 Rex: Lindsay, hi. Lindsay: I'm meeting someone. Rex: I just need a minute. Lindsay: No. Rex: I never should have been in that hotel room covering up for Jen. You were right. Lindsay: No, you should have gone to the police. A woman was killed, for god's sake. Rex: I know, but if you could have seen how upset Jen was. She -- can you forgive me? Lindsay: Jen's my only concern now. Rex: Mine, too. Jen: "Sleepytime motel"? Rex: And I'll always be there for her. You can count on it. At the student union, Marcie tries to ease her way into a discussion about what’s bothering Jen. Marcie: Hey. I -- I saw you giving your statement at the police station. You and Joe kind of seem like things are stressed out. Jen: Yeah, you could say that. Marcie: Anyway, I was just thinking that the party that you're planning for Joe -- well, maybe you ought to plan it with somebody else. You know, Rex -- he's nothing but trouble. Just like Michael McBain. Jen leaves. Marcie: I'll catch you later. Marcie spots Al. Marcie: Ahem. Al: Marcie, hey. I was about to go and get some late dinner. You want to come? Marcie: No, don't even try it. Don't even try it because I know exactly why you're being friendly to me. Al looks confused. Marcie: I hope that you have had a really good time making fun of me. Al: Wait a minute. What -- what are you -- Marcie: Because you have done it for the last time. Al: Ok, slow down. What are you talking about? Marcie: You and Madison. You were dating her, sleeping with her -- I don't care what you were doing, whatever it was. Al: Uh -- yeah. Marcie: You two thought it would be really funny to make me think that you liked me. And then when I actually did think that you might like me, it would be even funnier because you would completely humiliate me again! Al: No, Marcie, it wasn't like that. Marcie: Oh, don't be disappointed because it never would have worked. Because I know that I’m important. I know that I'm beautiful. Al showed me that. And no one can take that away from me, especially not a creep like you. Al: Hey -- Marcie, wait a minute -- Marcie: Wait? Wait for what? Wait for what? I can have nothing to do with you. As far as I am concerned, she killed Al. Al: Wait a minute, ok? Why -- why don't you just listen to me? Marcie: Ugh! Al: Will you talk to me for just one second? Marcie: Talk to you about what? Al: Come on. Marcie: I have nothing left to say to you! Oh -- look. There's your girlfriend. You can talk to her. Maddi-Evil slithers up to Al. Madci-Evil: Michael, you bad boy. Why haven't you called me? Al: I'm busy right now. Maddi-Evil: Oh. With who? I don't see anyone. Marcie: (chuckles bitterly) You two are perfect for each other. Al: Marcie, wait. Marcie rushes away. Maddi-Evil: Loser. I am so glad I ran into you. Deke and I are done for good now, so maybe we could go for a drink sometime. Al: Take your hands off of me. You make me sick! Maddi-Evil: What? Al: Do you not hear me? Get away from me, all right? I never want to see you again! Later, Al is trying to figure out how he can deal with Michael’s past and Marcie’s feelings. Al's voice: "I can't do this -- I make things worse with Marcie every day. When she sees me, the only face she sees is Michael’s. I can't control what Michael does, who he was. Until I figure this out, I should probably just stay away from Marcie." Marcie hears a music box playing. She looks around and discovers the body of Maddi-Evil. Marcie: Oh, my god. Oh, my god -- help! Somebody, help! Later, John is at the crime scene. Officer: Agent McBain? We got the info you wanted. John: She enrolled here at the university? Officer: Reinstated for next semester. And she signed up for a dance class, no credit. John: School give her an ID? Officer: They said she should have a temp. John: Killer's probably got it by now. Thanks. John: How you doing? Marcie: Hi. John: Hey, listen, Marcie, I -- I know this isn't easy, but I got to ask you a few questions, ok? Marcie: Ok. John: Yeah. You see anybody around here, anybody suspicious? Anybody that might have been watching that girl? Marcie: Uh – (thinks about Michael) Wednesday, December 10, 2003 At the police station, Bo is talking to Marcie. Marcie: Listen, it was horrible. I -- I just don't know what else to say. You know, I always had these awful feelings for Madison because she was always mean to me and then everything that she and Deke did to me and Al. But, I mean, to see her lying there like that -- Bo: Marcie, Marcie, just take a couple of deep breaths, ok? Take it easy. Marcie: No one should have to die like that. Daniel: I don't appreciate that I wasn't informed the minute this broke. Bo: I didn't know you investigated crimes, Colson. I'll brief you in a minute. Daniel: Hey, why don't you brief me now? Bo: Agent McBain, would you take Ms. Walsh's statement, please? John: Yeah, sure. Daniel: I assume you canvassed the building. Commissioner, if you haven't, I suggest you get going on it. I – At Rodi’s, Ron bellies up to the bar. Natalie: Hey, Ron. Ron: Hey. Can I get a bourbon, beer chaser, please? Natalie: Sure. You ok? Ron: Yeah. In the meanwhile at a table in the center of the room, Stephen Haver is holding court with several women. Thompson approaches the table. Dr. Haver: Hey. Woman: How you doing? Dr. Haver: Mr. Thompson, welcome. Mr. Thompson: Thank you. Dr. Haver: Please, join us. Mr. Thompson: Thank you. Jessica walks into Rodi’s and approaches the bar. Jessica: Hey, Ron. Ron: Hey. Jessica: How's it going? Ron: It's good, it's good. Natalie: What can I get you? Jessica: I'll have just a white wine. I just filed this week's story for "The Banner," and it took way longer than I thought. Natalie: Where's Antonio? Jessica: He's meeting me here. There's Professor Haver. That guy over there in the brown suede jacket. Remember that psychology course, analytical approaches to criminal sexuality? Natalie: Freaks and the freaks that love them, right? Jessica: It's actually really an incredible course, and he's a great professor. Actually -- Natalie: What? Jessica: He can maybe help me with this new article that I’m writing. I'll be back in a sec, ok? At his table, Haver regales his colleagues with stories from his past. Professor Haver: I'm telling you, the woman pulls out a gun in the courtroom and shoots the lover right there in front of everybody. Woman: Oh, my god. Professor Haver: It was like something out of a bad TV movie. Woman: That's amazing. Second woman: Wow. Jessica: Excuse me, Dr. Haver. I'm sorry. Dr. Haver: Oh, Ms. Buchanan, please join us, if you dare. I'm just sharing some old war stories out of the old days covering trials up in Boston. Jessica: Well, I don't want to interrupt what's going on. I was wondering if I could drop by during your office hours and ask you a couple questions. Dr. Haver: Why don't you ask away right now if you've got the time. Besides, they can't keep up with me, not at this late an hour, right? Woman: Not in the wine department, that's for sure. Dr. Haver: Oh! Woman: We've got to teach class at 9:00 A.M., unlike a certain professor who gets to sleep in. Dr. Haver: Bingo. Mr. Thompson: I've really got to take off. Dr. Haver: Ok, abandon me. They're all abandoning me. And leave me with the bill. That's all right. Mr. Thompson: Tomorrow. Dr. Haver: Tomorrow. Yes. All right. The women and Thompson leave. Dr. Haver: So, Ms. Buchanan, please join me. Jessica: Thank you. Dr. Haver: What can I do for you? Jessica: Actually, I was hoping that you could help me. I'm writing this article about sexual harassment on campus, and I could use your help. Dr. Haver: On the psychology of it? Jessica: Well, that and, well, you're also on the Ethics Committee, and there's been a couple incidents. Dr. Haver: What do you want to know? Jessica: Well, a student came to me and informed me that there's a professor that's been -- that's been trading grades for sex. Dr. Haver: That's a very serious charge. Has she made an official complaint? Jessica: No, and that's why I have to be extremely careful with what I write, and I could really use your advice. Dr. Haver: Well, I can certainly try. I think I'd need a refresher, first. Please? Jessica: Sure. At the bar, Natalie checks on Ron. Natalie: Want some food with that? Ron: Uh -- yeah, yeah. Let me get one of those popcorn shrimp things, and get it to go, ok? At the police station, Daniel is conferring with Bo about the latest victim. Daniel: There were six teardrops on her face, right? Bo: Five, six. That's good. Daniel: Yeah, well, somebody's got to stay on top of things. I'm going to go check the crime scene. Bo: Well, if you touch anything, I'll have to chop your hands off. We found the victim's purse in the trash out back. Daniel leaves. John comes into the office. John: Yeah, your guy told me. The ID was missing, as well? Bo: Yeah, yeah. Another souvenir for the psycho. Bo’s phone rings. Bo: Buchanan. You what? How the hell did that happen? Well, then you find him, all right? Check every place that's still open. (hangs up and looks over at John) I had someone tailing Ron Walsh, and they lost him. John: But we should get Marcie’s statement on paper tonight. Bo: Yeah. Yeah, let's do it. John: Ok. Officer: Commissioner -- Bo: Yeah. Officer: This guy says he saw something. Man: I saw Maddie Kensington in here tonight, and she had a huge argument with some guy right over there. John: You see who she was arguing with? Marcie: I know. She was arguing with your brother, Michael. At Rodi’s, Natalie gives Ron back his change. Natalie: There you go. $10 -- change! A cell phone rings. It’s Antonio’s. Antonio: Hey, Ron. Ron: Hey, what's up? Antonio’s cell phone rings again. He answers it. Antonio: Hello. Where? Same MO? Damn it, I wish I still had my badge. No, nothing. Thanks, Andy. I appreciate the heads-up.
At the table with Haver, Jessica is obviously enamored. Jessica: Yeah. Dr. Haver: Just like that? Natalie leans toward Antonio. Natalie: Hi, Antonio. Antonio: Hey, Natalie. Natalie: Would you like a beer? Antonio: Sure. Natalie: Somebody's been looking for you. Antonio: Oh, yeah? Who's she talking to? Natalie: Dr. Somebody. It's her professor. Antonio: Oh. How's it going? Natalie: I'm -- you know Cristian died six weeks ago today. Antonio: I thought about that this morning. Natalie: Still feels like yesterday. Antonio: We'll get through it. Natalie: Yeah, somehow. Back to work. Meanwhile at his table, Haver shares his pearls of wisdom with a starry-eyed Jessica. Dr. Haver: The good professor's exhibiting a need for control. Sleeping with students is about power far more than sex. Like rape -- one person making another person vulnerable. The only real enjoyment, if you can call it that, is in the domination. Now, you should tell this young lady please bring the professor to the attention of the university. And then you – Antonio walks over to the table. Antonio: Excuse me. Jessica: Oh, hi, you made it. Dr. Haver, this is Antonio Vega. Dr. Haver: Antonio, pleasure to meet you. Antonio: Same here. Jessica: Sit down. Dr. Haver: Please, please join us. Antonio: Sure. Dr. Haver: Yes. Jessica: Sit. I was just discussing with Dr. Haver this new article I’m writing on sexual harassment. Is everything ok? Antonio: I'll tell you later. Man: Jess, did you hear what happened? Jessica: No. Man: Maddie Kensington was found dead at the student union. It's another one of those music box murders. At the police station, Al is irritated about being dragged in for questioning. Al: This is crap, John. I get maybe four hours of sleep a night if I’m lucky, and you got me in here for questioning? John: Do you know a girl named Madison Kensington? Al: Yeah, I know her. We dated. So what? Bo: Did you have an argument with her tonight? Al: Yes, we had an argument. What, is she trying to charge me with arguing? Is that even a crime? John: She's dead, Michael. Al: She's -- really? Well, it couldn't happen to a nicer person, but I didn't kill her. Daniel: Yeah, well, that's what we're here to find out, isn't it? John: Look, we're just trying to get a read on what happened, all right? Al: Well, we argued. What can I say? Bo: About what? Al: Her and her boyfriend were the ones who attacked Marcie -- Marcie Walsh. They put her in a dumpster. Are you not getting this? Marcie got an infection. She got very sick. Al Holden died. Bo: Were you a friend of Al's? Luna appears beside Al. Luna: Hey, darling, you don't look like Al to these people. You're Michael McBain, remember? Al: Um -- I knew Al a little, but I'm a friend of Marcie’s. Marcie: No, Michael, you're not my friend. Daniel: Well, I guess we'll call that lie number one, huh? Bo: Why don't we move this into my office. Bo pauses for a moment and calls Gabrielle. Bo: Gabrielle, if you're there, pick up the phone, ok? Yeah, well, we've had another murder. That's why I’m not home yet. I worry about you when you're out this late, so call me as soon as you get this. I love you. In the meanwhile, at the sleazy, hole-in-the-wall No Name Bar, Gabrielle is draped over the bar drinking. Troy comes in and spots her. He walks over and sits on the stool next to hers Gabrielle: Troy? At Rodi’s, Jessica is shocked by the news about Maddi-Evil. Antonio: I'm going to get you some water. Jessica: Ok. Madison Kensington -- I mean, it's hard to believe. I don't even -- I don't even know how I feel about this. Dr. Haver: I had Ms. Kensington in my psych 205 class last spring. I thought she was expelled. Jessica: Yeah. She got reinstated. Her parents are tight with the trustees. They're big donors. Dr. Haver: Frightening to think that there's a killer loose on campus. Jessica: No kidding. I mean, what would make somebody do something like this? Who is this guy? At the sleazy, hole-in-the-wall No Name Bar, Troy tries to come on to a skittish Gabrielle.. Troy: Looks like the martinis are excellent. I'm not going to hurt you, Gabrielle. It's a public place. You're perfectly safe here. Besides, I may never get another opportunity to apologize again. Gabrielle: I checked. You were moved to a maximum security section in Statesville prison. Troy: Yeah. Once I started getting better. Gabrielle: How could you be out? Troy: Have a seat. I'll explain. Can I get a club soda? And another martini for the lady. The good news is I’ve been on antipsychotics for quite a while now and I've never felt more lucid. Unfortunately for me, the bad news is I now understand what I did, the horrible acts that I committed against so many people, Gabrielle, including yourself. Gabrielle: You put me in a drawer in a cold, dark morgue. Troy: I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am. You have to understand, I had no idea how cruel I was being. I didn't know how much you were suffering. Gabrielle: This doesn't make sense to me. I don't understand this at all. Did you escape? At the police station, Al is amazed at the implication of John’s questions. Al: I don't believe this, John. You think I'd drive all the way to Jersey to kill somebody, drive -- John: Michael, no one is accusing you of killing anybody. Daniel: Of course, that could change. John: All I'm saying is it's a little strange that you would get into a shouting match. Al: Oh, now it's a shouting match. John: A shouting match with an ex-girlfriend over two people you hardly even knew. Bo: Marcie, would you like an officer to escort you back to the dorm? Marcie: No, that's ok. I'll be fine. Thanks. A police officer drags Ron into the police station. Ron: All right, all right, get your hands off me, man! Officer: You just have to answer some questions, so relax. Marcie: Ron, what's going on? Ron: That's what I'd like to know. All right, I pull up to Foxy Roxy's. I just started having my dinner. This guy jumps me. Officer: No, I asked him to come to the station house with me, commissioner. I never -- Bo: It's ok. Just give me a minute, ok? Ron, where were you tonight? Marcie: Commissioner, he didn't kill anybody. Bo: See, what I'd like to know is why did you ditch that officer that we had tailing you? Ron: See, I knew it. I knew somebody was following -- why the hell wouldn't I lose the guy? I thought he was out to mug me. Daniel: Or you lost the tail to find another girl. Bo: Let me do my job. Daniel: Commissioner -- I suggest you call a lawyer, Mr. Walsh. Marcie: What are you saying? Daniel: What am I saying? Marcie: Yeah. Daniel: I'm saying a drifter kills two women in New Jersey. He goes to Delaware, kills another one, ends up in Llanview -- Marcie: Ron came here to be with me. Daniel: Maybe. John: Knock it off, Colson. Ron grabs his chest and begins to sink to the floor. John: Ron, what's the matter, man? Hey, Ron, talk to me, man. Marcie: Ron? Ron, are you ok? John: Ron. Marcie: Ronnie -- Ronnie, what's wrong? Bo: Call EMS. John: Michael! Michael! Marcie: Ronnie, Ronnie -- no, Ronnie -- John: Get in here, man. We need a doctor. Come here! Marcie: Ron, come on. Ron, are you ok? At Rodi’s, Jessica, Natalie and Antonio discuss the latest victim of the music box killer with Haver. Natalie: Maddie Kensington? What was she doing back in Llanview? Jessica: She got reinstated at LU. Natalie: This is happening every couple of weeks. Dr. Haver: Yes, there's definitely a pattern. I'm writing a book on the psychopathology of serial killers. I just got back from Oregon, as a matter of fact. Antonio: Green River? Dr. Haver: 49 young women. The FBI's contacted me several times. I do most of my work with killers closer to home, of course. Leesburg, Allentown. In fact, there's a very interesting patient right across the river in the secure hospital section of Statesville prison. I may not have the answer yet, but I'm determined to find out what makes the sexual predator tick. At the sleazy, hole-in-the-wall No Name Bar, Troy and Gabrielle continue their conversation. Troy: No, no need to escape. Thanks to the drugs, I’m able to get passes to go out on my own. Gabrielle: So many awful things you did -- I don't understand how they could let you out for even five minutes -- Troy: I am so ashamed of what i did -- Gabrielle: Where's your pass? Why don't you show me your pass? Troy: If I could change things, I would, Gabrielle. But I can’t. And you have to know that I didn't come out looking for you tonight. I mean, how would I know that you're in some out-of-the-way dive bar? Gabrielle: No. No, I suppose you couldn't have known that. Troy: Gabrielle, when I came in here and I saw you sitting here -- you were drinking all alone. I felt responsible. Did I do this to you, Gabrielle? Gabrielle: Oh, don't flatter yourself. My son died. Troy: I'm sorry. I read it in the paper. I just forgot. Al was a good man. I'm sorry for your loss. You shouldn't be here all alone, Gabrielle. Why isn't Bo with you? Is it Nora? Gabrielle: No. Although it wouldn't surprise me if those two don't end up together, somehow, somewhere, sooner or later. Troy: Eventually, Nora always gets what she wants, doesn't she? At the police station, Al tries to revive Ron. Al: Call 911. Marcie: Listen, he was angry. They were yelling at him. They were harassing him. He was just upset. I don't know what happened. Al: John, get my bag. John: Got it. Marcie: Please don't let him die. Al: Ok. He's got a pulse, but he's not breathing. What was he doing right before this happened? Daniel: He was just making a statement. Al: No, no, did he have anything in his mouth? Was he eating anything? Marcie: No, he just came from Foxy Roxy's, but I have no idea. Bo: He brought this bag in with him. Bo hands the bag to Al. He checks the contents. Al: What is it? Shrimp? Shellfish. Anaphylactic shock. Marcie: What? Al: He's allergic to shrimp. Ok. Daniel: Where the hell are the EMS? This guy's a second year resident -- Bo: Oh, shut the hell up. Marcie: Oh, my god. Al: Ok. Al: Ok. The epi should kick in any time now. Come on, Ron. Come on, buddy. Come on, come on. Breathe for me, breathe for me. Come on. Come on! At Rodi’s, Haver continues to wax eloquently about his theories. Dr. Haver: My theory is that each victim represents something lost from the killer's life or something taken away. Antonio: Like what? Dr. Haver: I'm not sure. But this man is definitely killing the same person over and over again. It's someone he has an intense emotional bond with. Jessica: What drives a person to do something like this? Dr. Haver: Intense hatred or love or both. Later at the police station, John gives Al an update on Ron. John: Ok. They're at the hospital. That Ron guy just kept telling them he wanted to go home. Al: Marcie seemed happy. John: You did real good, Michael. Al: Yeah? No idea how I did it. John: You're a doctor. Al: Uh -- right. But I always wanted to be a lawyer. John: What are you talking about? You wanted to be a doctor since you were, what, 3 years old? Al: (realizes he has tripped up) These are the jokes, John. John: Right. Always were the funny guy. Hey, look, I’m sorry again about dragging you in here. We just need to know what happened during the Kensington girl's last few hours. So if you can give us a statement, I’ll give you a ride home. Al: Sounds good. John: Ok. Bo: It's a good thing Ron Walsh pulled through. Daniel: Yeah, yeah. He'll be in excellent health when I prosecute him. Bo: Daniel, Ron Walsh ditched the cop that we had tailing him because he thought he was going to get mugged. Daniel: Maybe he ditched him because he had to strangle Madison Kensington. Bo: No, no, no. Look, this killer is methodical. He takes the time to draw little teardrop hearts on his victims' faces. He leaves a music box as a calling card. The guy's sick. Meanwhile at the sleazy, hole-in-the-wall No Name Bar, Troy is upset about Nora. Troy: You know, I saw my relationship with Nora as one of the great love stories of all time. And if I couldn't have her, then I wanted us both dead. When I finally snapped, I felt like she betrayed me, like everything was her fault. No other woman wanted me because of Nora. She destroyed my life, Gabrielle, just like she's destroying yours. Gabrielle: I don't blame Nora. Troy: No? Gabrielle: No. Troy: Why not? If it wasn't for Nora, you'd be with Bo right now. Gabrielle: No. I don't know. I'm not -- I’m not very clear on what the truth is or isn’t. I just -- I just miss my son. Troy: I'm sorry. You and I, Gabrielle -- we've both lost a great deal. At the police station, John has finished up. Al: All right. John: Good deal. You still want that ride home? Al: Yeah. Marcie comes into the room. Marcie: Michael? Al: Marcie, hi. Marcie: Hi. Al: Is he ok? Marcie: Yeah, Ron’s doing great, thanks to you. I had no idea that he was allergic to shrimp. Al: Well, allergies can change. You know, he should go and get a full battery of tests done. Marcie: Right. You know, I wanted to say something to you. John: You know what? I forgot I actually got someplace I got to be. I'll catch up with you later. Al: Right on. John leaves. Marcie: Well, you know how you said that we kind of got off on the wrong foot? Al: Yeah. Marcie: And it kind of got worse after that. Al: It definitely did. Marcie: Well, I watched you save my brother's life tonight, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Marcie reaches for his hand and holds it for a second. At the sleazy, hole-in-the-wall No Name Bar, Troy tries to put Gabrielle on the spot. Troy: So, you going to tell Bo about our little meeting tonight? Gabrielle: I don't think he would understand. Troy: Yeah. Probably best to keep it our little secret. It was good seeing you, Gabrielle. It was good being able to ask you for your forgiveness. I hope to see you again. At Rodi’s, Antonio tries to take Jessica’s mind off of the latest murder. Antonio: Hey -- listen, I know it's tough, but when we get back home, let's try not to talk about this, ok? Just you and me? Jessica: Deal. Antonio: Let's get out of here. They leave. John comes in and goes to the bar just as Natalie has a flashback of Cris. Natalie: Cristian. John: Hey. Listen, I was just -- I was driving by, and I didn't know if you had heard. Natalie: Maddie Kensington? Yeah, I heard. John: Yeah. Listen, this music box killer -- he strikes about every two weeks. But that could all change. You know, we're talking about a real nut job here, so just be careful. Natalie: I'm always careful. Friday, December 12, 2003 At Rodi’s, John is talking on his cell phone. John: No, you were not listening. No, I said it -- I said it was a store where the killer might have bought a leotard he used in the murder. I cannot interview the guy until tomorrow morning and -- hey, you know what? I'm going to call you when I get something else. Natalie spots John over by the pool table. Natalie: Shouldn't you be trying to catch a serial killer? John: That's exactly what I’m doing. At Rex’s apartment, Rex is trying to explain his version of reality to Jen. Rex: I don't care who else you married. You were my wife first. You'll always be mine. Jen: It just feels wrong. It feels cheap. Rex: You're not. Jen: Ok, what kind of woman sleeps with you and then goes to meet her husband? Rex: Is Joe even home? I bet he's out performing all sorts of miracles. Jen: He's at St. James doing this advent carol service. Rex: Same thing. Jen: I should go. Rex: Why? Do you -- do you plan on singing? Because what you're doing here is much more heavenly. Jen: I said that I’d be there. Rex: How often has he said that and then not shown up? Don't go. At St. James, Viki and Kelly are putting the finishing touches on the decorations for the service. Viki: Kelly, I’m so grateful you had the time to come here today to be my other hand. Kelly: Oh, sure. Anytime. Marcie: Mrs. Davidson, hi. Viki: Marcie, hi. Marcie: Is Joe around? Viki: No, hon, he went off to run some last-minute errands, I think. Can I help you with something? Marcie: Well, just, you know, he has so much to do, I just wanted to make sure that he's ok. Viki: He's been going through a bit of a rough time recently. I know that he will appreciate your being here early. Marcie: Thanks. That's nice to hear. I'm going to go find him. Viki: Ok. Marcie: Bye. Viki: Bye. Marcie leaves to look for Joey. Kelly: So you're worried about Joe, too? Viki: Yeah. Yes, Kelly, I'm very worried about Joey. Kelly: What about Kevin? Are you worried about Kevin? Viki: Why? Kelly? Kelly, why should I be worried about Kevin? Viki: Because he moved out of Asa's and he wants a divorce. At Rodi’s, Natalie and John continue to snark at each other. Natalie is behind the bar trying to decorate. Natalie: So this is how you work on a case? John: Pretty much. Natalie: What, you can only work on holidays? John: Helps me to think when I’m doing something else. Natalie: Like hanging tacky garland. John: This or shoot pool with you making funny comments. (John walks behind the bar to help Natalie) Here. Natalie: Oh, by all means, think. John: Theories up the wazoo. Natalie: Excuse me? John: I was just saying, what good are theories, Natalie? Natalie: Got me. John: Psych profiles, clues. We got a hundred things we can tie this guy to, but in the end we got nothing, not a damn thing. Natalie: You know, I don't know if I'd ever want to be around you while you're thinking. John: Six corpses, and I don't want number seven. Here, I think you need a light over there. Marcie walks into Rodi’s and goes over to the bar. Marcie: Hi, you guys. Hey, John, do you think maybe you could give this to your brother Michael for me? (hands him a small gift wrapped box) John: Yeah, what's it for? Natalie: Christmas? Marcie: No, actually, it's a thank-you gift for your brother for saving my brother's life. John: He did real good, didn't he? Marcie: Yeah. If I ever lost Ron, I don't know what I’d do. John: Look, I know he's still on the watch list, but for what it's worth, Bo and I don't consider him a suspect. Marcie: Thanks. That's really nice to hear. Roxy rushes into Rodi’s and careens over to the bar. Roxy: So who's next? Is my number up? Is yours? Is Natalie’s? Natalie: Roxy, don't go crazy on us, please. Roxy: Hey, honey, if I were you, I would stick real close to this fed. Keep it real safe. Just hang on like cheap perfume. At Rex’s apartment, Jen tries to get her bearings. Jen: Thank you for covering for me when they found my ring in Karen’s room, but you know what? They returned my ring, so -- Rex: How does that work, anyway? We make love, and then you put your real wedding ring on and we never happened? Jen: I told you, I'm not good. I'm cheap. Rex: I didn't mean -- Jen: I don't know how this works, either. What am I supposed to do? How am I supposed to look at Joe with all these damn vestry people already thinking things about me? Rex: Then stay here! Jen: I have to show Joe that I want to try and fix our marriage, if I even can. Rex: So -- so you just used me? Jen: I don't know. Rex: I am sick of always being available. Ok, I am sick of you pretending that, you know, you hate this because underneath you're a good little wife. Jen: You have no idea what I really think about myself or who I am. Rex: I'm the only one who does, Jen. Hey, you want the reverend back? Go get him. Go ahead. Jen: No, don't -- don't do that. Don't -- don't kick me out. I can't take that right now. Rex: Go! At Rodi’s, Roxy tries to get reassurances from John about her safety. Natalie: Roxy, don't bust his chops. John: Hey, you know, this place -- it's so close to the police station. The cops are in and out of here all the time. If she's got to work somewhere, I think this is a good place for Natalie to be working right now. Roxy: Yeah, but what about me? Who's looking out for me, man? John: Yeah, well, until this guy is caught, you all need to be real careful. Roxy: Well, I do. You know, I go to the liquor store around the corner rather than the cheapo one that's, like, four blocks away. Natalie: There you go. Roxy: Hey, Nat, you got a pink vinyl Christmas tree that I could borrow? Natalie: What happened to yours? Roxy: Hair dryer. Natalie: Sorry. All out of pink vinyl. Roxy: Well, I'm going to go hit the head. Natalie: Some things are just better left to the imagination. John: So, presents under a pink vinyl Christmas tree? Natalie: Yeah, then after that, we'd put out soda crackers and gin the night before. John: Your Santa was a real class act. Natalie: Yeah, well, I usually bought the gifts. Thrift stores. So I guess Santa was a real piece of work. John: I remember buying gifts for Michael. Holidays were a good time of tips for mom, so we usually celebrated afterwards when she had a chance to go to the store. Natalie: Hmm. Sounds like fun. John: Well, it was good. Yeah, we caught a break on all the after-Christmas sales. Natalie: Yeah, well, Christmas was definitely a busy time for Roxy, too. Roxy loves to gamble on Christmas. She says the odds are better. John: Well, I guess I’m lucky. All mom had to do was sing in casinos. Marcie: Really? That's a cool job. What did she sing? John: She can sing anything. In fact, you know, someone was telling me the other day that you're a real good singer. Natalie: Yeah, this girl's awesome. Aren't you supposed to be singing over at St. James today? Marcie: Yeah. John: Oh, I wish I could see that, but I have to be at the PD. Soon. Marcie: It's no big deal, really. Listen, can you make sure you give this to Michael? John: Absolutely. Marcie: Thank you. Bye, guys. Marcie leaves. Natalie: Seems like your mom's pretty cool. John: The best. Took me a while to realize that. After dad died, she just kind of went away, you know, without really going anywhere. She just kind of fell apart. Some nights, she wouldn't even come home. Natalie: I know what that's about. Making up one story after another to try to keep my brother Rex from flipping out. Jen stumbles in. Jen: I want a drink without a hard time. Everyone stares at her. She focuses on John. Jen: So I guess the killer didn't know that I was in the bathroom or else he would have killed me, too. John: We don't know that. Jen: I don't really fit the profile, anyway. John: How so? Jen: Well, I'm a married woman. And you know what? I've got to go meet my husband at the church. John: You shouldn't drive. Jen: I've got a cab outside. John: You know what? I'll walk you to your cab. Jen: Whatever. Natalie: I hope I did the right thing by not telling Joey about Jen and Rex. Roxy: Oh, forget about that. What's going on with you and the fed? You two are looking a little cozy. At St. James, the carol service has begun. Evelyn Brigham, the resident gossip leans over to Viki and asks her a question. Evelyn: Victoria, I don't see your daughter-in-law Jen in attendance. Is she here? Viki lifts her chin and concentrates on Joey who is standing behind the altar. Joey: I'd like to thank you for coming to this carol service. Tonight reminds us of the wonder and significance of this holiday -- before we all go to the malls. Everyone laughs Joey: Christmas is always -- well, it's always an adventure. I'd like to start out tonight by singing my favorite carol. Marcie? The music starts. All: (sings) The first noel the angel did say was to certain poor
shepherds in fields as they lay in fields where they lay keeping their sheep on
a cold winter's night that was so deep noel, noel The doors are flung open and Jen stumbles into the sanctuary. She careens down the aisle, knocking over poinsettias and other decoration. The music stops, the congregation stops singing and everyone begins to whisper and murmur. Jen: (LOUD and slurry) You, Mrs. Brigham -- you were right about me. You feel better? She said it. Apparently, I have no shame! That's what she said! Joey: Jen -- Jen: I'm just going to screw you up. We never should have gotten married. Joey: Jen, let's just go, ok? Jen: No, you -- you cannot blame him for what I do! It's my fault! Can't you see I'm not good and you are? So why would you want to be stuck with me for the rest of your life? Sorry, I’m just -- I'm just going to -- I'm going to let you go. I'm just -- my Christmas present to you is that I’m leaving you. Viki: Jen, please, come outside. Jen: I got to go. Jen rushes away. Kevin keeps Joey from following her. Joey: Jen? Jennifer! Kevin: Let her go. Just let her go. Rex opens the door at his apartment and finds Jen standing there. Rex: Tonight's looking much better. Jen: It's done, it's done. I went in there. I told him exactly what I had to say. And I don't know -- they were saying stuff about me. I couldn't even hear. I don't know, but it's done. Rex: Ok, what's done? Where'd you go? Jen: I don't even want talk about it. I just -- I just want to forget I ever was married to Joe. I just want to forget about Joe, period. Rex: Ok, I can get with that. All right, I’m glad -- I'm glad to help, ok, any way I can. Ok, except this. All right, just -- Jen: I came to you. I came to you. Rex: Come here, come here. (hugs Jen) Jen: I left everyone. I snuck out the back door. They think that I'm sleeping upstairs. Rex: You're killing me. All right. Ok, come here. Come here, all right? Jen: Hey. Rex: Just -- no, lie down. Jen: What? Rex: Lie down here. All right. Just watch your head, all right? Put your feet up, put your feet up. Just -- all right. Just lie here. Ok. There we go. There we are. Just -- is that better? Comfortable? Ok. I'll -- I'll sit with you. Just -- shh. It's ok. It's ok.
At Rodi’s, John is talking on the phone with Daniel. John: Listen to me. You need to keep that radio car watching Jen Buchanan's. Why? Why, Colson? Because you went and told the press there was a witness to Karen Reeder’s murder. That's why. Roxy: You know, I love it when a man gets mad and his temples start throbbing. Natalie: Roxy, will you cool it? Roxy: Sorry, honey. Natalie: I love Cristian and I miss him, especially right now, ok? I always will miss him. I will always love him. I don't want to see anyone, ok? Are we clear? Roxy: Ok, all right. You know, but sometimes you got to get right back on the hearse. John walks up to Natalie and John. Roxy: Hey, Johnny Mac, I got a job for you. John: I -- I don't do nails, Roxy. Roxy: No, something a lot better than that. This job is -- you bring eggnog, you know, and very heavy on the nog, and some good Jamaican stuff. Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. John: So what was all of that about eggnog and Jamaica? Roxy: Rum. John: Rum and Jamaica? Roxy: Would you stop teasing me? Ok, see, Natalie’s got a plan, like a concept. You know, she wants to have a real Christmas tree that's real wood and everything, and we were going to invite some people for dinner, so why don't you join us? John: And bring the eggnog and rum? Roxy: Yeah, you got it. You can come, you can stare at the tree. And if you're lucky, we'll even let you put the angel on top. John: Hmm. At Rex’s apartment, he leans over Jen who’s stretched out on the bed. Rex: Listen, I hate to do this, but I got to go to work. Is that ok? Jen: No. At St. James, Kevin tries to comfort Joey. Joey: I knew she was unhappy, but, Kev -- Kevin: She blindsided you. I know, I know. Joey: Here. I'm going to see if she's ok. Kevin: No, no, listen, just come here. Give her some space, ok? Listen, it's not like she pulled you aside to tell you what she had to say. Joey: She didn't plan this. She was drunk. Kevin: I know, but she chose a time where she could say her piece, all right? You just need to let the dust settle here. I don't think she's ready for a face-to-face with her husband, and I don't think you're ready, either, Joe. Evelyn approaches Marcie. Evelyn: Miss Walsh -- Marcie: I'm sorry, if you'll excuse me, I really have to get going. Evelyn: You're a good friend of Mrs. Buchanan, aren't you? Marcie: Yes, she's my best friend. Evelyn: Well, surely you could have done something to prevent this. Marcie: Mrs. Brigham, with all due respect, this is none of your business or mine. Evelyn: Look, there's no need to speak to me that -- Marcie: I think that you should take Reverend Joe’s advice and remember that Christmas is about love and generosity, not about gossip. Renee sits next to Viki and they commiserate. Renee: I hate seeing Joey in so much pain. Is there anything that I can do, Viki? Viki: I don't think there's anything any of us can do. Renee: It breaks my heart. I hope the two of them can work something out. Viki: Oh, Renee, this is so awful. My god, three of my children are in such pain and it's Christmas. I guess I should be grateful that at least one of them is happy.
