MARCAL SCENES PAGE 43
Scene 48 Selfish Seductions
& Noble Sacrifices Monday, February 2, 2004 Setup: Marcie has just thrown a dinner party that brought Eve McBain to town. It turns out to be a good evening and Eve and Al (Michael) seem to reconnect to some degree. Afterwards, Jen, Marcie and Al (Michael) go to Ultra Violet. Marcie and Al (Michael) go to the bar but Jen looks around and spots Rex and Lindsay in a lip-lock. She is shocked and irritated as hell. Jen: I told you to stay away from her! Lindsay: Jen -- Rex: Hey, if she wants to be with me, it's her call. Jen: Be with you? Oh, my god, mom, what the hell are you thinking? Lindsay tries to look ashamed. Jen: Answer me. What's going on? Lindsay: We were just fooling around and having an argument about which generation knows how to kiss better, and it turned into a bet. Jen: A bet? Lindsay: Yes, a bet. That's all it was. Rex: Yeah, that's all it was. Jen: I think you should go home. Lindsay: I think I'll be the one to decide when that time is. Jen: Ok, then come over here with me. Jen drags Lindsay away. Rex: Hey, Jen, don't you want to know who won? Was a tie. Marcie and Al watch the scene. Al: Oh, man. Rex walks over to the bar and spots them. Rex: Hey, if it isn't Llanview's favorite fun couple. Al: Ugh. Are you serving drinks or just dry wit? Rex: Both. What'll it be? Al: Let me have a beer. What are you going to have? Marcie: Oh, Virgin Mary. Rex: That's too easy. Al: Oh, what a jerk that guy is. Marcie: Yeah, forget about him. Al: You did a really great thing tonight. Marcie: Yeah, so did you. Al: All I did was not act like a jerk for a little while. Marcie: Yeah, but that's really hard for you. Al: Not with your patented jerk-alert system. Marcie: Michael. Al: You know, I can't believe you brought my mom here. You're amazing. Marcie: I really like her. Al: Yeah, John's always going on about how great she is, you know? We just never clicked. Not until tonight, that is. John seemed really happy.
In the meanwhile, Jen berates Lindsay for her actions. Jen: You are old enough to be his mother. I mean, he's just using you to try to get back at me. Lindsay: Why are you making this about you? Does everything always have to be about you? Jen: Where does that come from? Lindsay: Sorry. I'm sorry. I didn't mean it the way that it sounded. It's just that what you said upset me.
Back at the bar, Marcie manages to spill her drink. Marcie: It's not spicy enough. Oh, no! Oh, no! I'm so sorry! Al: Man! Marcie, Marcie -- Marcie: I'm sorry, I'm sorry! Al: No, no, stop! Stop! Stop moving! Marcie: Ok. Al: Freeze. Marcie: Ok. Al: Ok. Take these napkins and move away from the bar. Marcie: Ok. Al: Ok. Marcie: I'm so sorry. Al: Oh, it's ok. People at the hospital love to see me and think that I can't control my bladder. Marcie: Oh, no, I think I ruined my shirt. Al: Oh, I think it's going to be all right. Marcie: All right, I'm going to the ladies' room. Al: Ok. Marcie: I'm sorry. Al: It's ok. Marcie rushes off and Jen walks up to the bar. Jen: Marcie strikes again? I mean, I love that girl, but she is a walking disaster area. Al: Oh, come on, everybody makes mistakes. Jen: Oh, do you mean me in the hospital? Al: No, no. No, I'm talking about my personal life. It's out of control. Jen: I doubt that. A cute guy like you? Michael-Al looks somewhat uncomfortable. Jen: (seductive) So, is it true what they say about doctors and nurses? Al: What do they say? Jen: Well, you have so much time on your hands, I mean, long hours, you know, you have to grab sleep whenever you can, and sometimes it's not sleep that you're grabbing. Al: You watch too much bad television. Jen: Well, it has to come from somewhere. So do you let outsiders into your parties? Marcie returns and sees what Jen is doing. Marcie: Ahem. Jen, can I talk to you for a second? Jen: Sure. Jen and Marcie walk away from the bar. Marcie: Why are you all over Michael? You don't even like him. Jen: We were just talking. Marcie: Jen, you're never just talking. You can't stand it that someone actually might be interested in me. Jen: Marcie, you don't even like him. Marcie: That is not true. Listen, I might have said that I wasn't interested in him -- Jen: Ok, first you don't and now you do, so how am I supposed to know? Marcie: Listen, the point is that I get a little bit of attention and you just have to take it away! Jen: I'm sorry. I didn't know something was going on between you two. Marcie: Well, technically, nothing is going on between us. Jen: Then why are you getting so bent out of shape? Marcie: I'm not getting bent out of shape! Jen: You're not making any sense! Marcie: Yeah, well, neither are you! Jen walks off and Marcie returns to the bar. Al: Everything ok? Marcie: No, I just went off on my best friend. Al: Because she was flirting with me? Marcie: I guess so. Al: That's Jen. She flirts. It's who she is. That's why I'm not as interested in her as I am in you. Marcie: She's supposed to be my best friend. Al: Uh, well, in that case, I guess that Valentine’s Day trip that you guys had planned, well, it's probably a bad idea. Marcie: Yeah, maybe it is. Rex eases up to Jen. Rex: You and your pit bull were going at it pretty good. Jen: Rex, bite me.
At Capricorn, Lindsay is meeting with RJ. Lindsay: Where do I sign? R.J.: Here. Lindsay: Ok. R.J.: Now, when I called you, it sounded like you were at UV. I thought we talked about this and you were all done with rex the boy wonder. What happened? Lindsay: Nothing. I mean, he kissed me. R.J.: That's nothing? Lindsay: That's what Jen said. R.J.: Jen? Your daughter was there? Lindsay: Yeah. She was really upset. I mean, she doesn't want him, but she doesn't want anyone else to have him, either. R.J.: You are her mother. Lindsay: I deserve to have a life, too.
At Ultra Violet, Riley approaches Jen. Riley: Jen. Jen: Hey. Uh, you might want to wipe the white powder off your nose. Riley: Oh, no, no, it's -- it's just a little cold. Jen: Right. Riley: Hey, I got some more if you want to. Jen: How about let's just go dance? Riley: I'm not too fond of music right now, all right? Jen: Hey, Flash is going to be ok. She is, ok? Come o come on, let's go dance. Riley: Hey, hey, hey, what about Rex? Jen: What about him? He's dating my mom. Riley: I thought your mom was dating my dad. Jen rolls her eyes and drags Riley off. Meanwhile at the bar, Marcie and Al continue their conversation. Al: So, you think since you're not going to be with Jen over the holiday you might want to spend it with me? Marcie: Isn't it a little early for that? Al: Valentine's Day is in two weeks. Marcie: No. No, I mean us. Michael, you're a really nice guy, but -- I mean, you're a lot nicer than you used to be -- Al: But I'm not nice enough for you. Marcie: No, I swear, it's not you, it's -- it's me. Al: Oh, really? God, I never heard that before. Marcie: No, it's true. Al: Look at me. Look in my eyes and tell me it's not me. For a moment, time seems to freeze as Marcie stares into Al’s eyes. Al's voice: You're going to meet somebody. Marcie: Who? When? Al: I don't know. Marcie: What are you talking about? Al: I don't know, exactly, Marcie, but when you meet this person, you've got to look into his eyes, ok? If you keep looking, eventually you'll see me. Marcie is obviously disturbed by what happened. Marcie: No. No, it's not -- it's not you. Al: Marcie? You ok? Marcie: Yeah. Yeah, I'm -- I'm going to go tell Jen that I can't make it on the winter trip. Marcie walks over to Jen and Riley. Marcie: Ok. Listen, about Winter Break -- I -- I really just don't think that I can make it. You know, I have a lot of things to do and I'm just really too busy, so -- Jen: Yeah, me, too. It was a bad idea. Marcie: Yeah. I guess. Bye. Marcie walks away. Riley: You know, if you're still looking to go on a trip, I'm leaving for London tomorrow, if you want to go. Jen: To London? Riley: Yeah. If you're into it. Jen: Thanks. That's really nice of you. Maybe I will. Maybe I'll go check in on Joe.
Wednesday, February 4, 2004 At the Llanview Airport, Marcie is talking on her cell phone. Marcie: Yes -- hey, hey, it's Marcie. No, I'm still at the airport. Well, our guest for tomorrow's show has been grounded. I don't know, you're the producer. Can you make it stop snowing in Boston? Yes, yes, I can wait a little longer. Ok, bye. Al walks up with a small boy and a woman. Boy: It's bad, isn't it, that you couldn't fix me at the hospital? Al: You got nothing to worry about, big guy. We do these procedures all the time, ok? I just didn't want you to be stuck up here all winter. You see, you do this in Miami, you get to recuperate on the beach. Woman: You're sure he's ok to travel? Al: Yeah, I've spoken to the folks you guys are going to meeting at the plane. Everything's taken care of. Woman: Thank you, Dr. McBain. Al: Not a problem. And you make sure that you bring me back a t-shirt, ok? You promise? Boy: I'm sure there's room on the plane. Al: Oh, I'm sorry. I can't come with you, buddy. Maybe next time, all right? Boy: Yeah. Al: Ok. The woman and boy head to the plane. Al spots Marcie. Al: Marcie, what are you doing here? Marcie: I was just admiring your plane-side manner. P.A. Announcer: Gate 28c, please. Last call, flight 308.
At Rodi’s, Jen is talking to Daniel Colson. Jen: Oh, Mr. Colson. I'm so sorry about what happened at the courthouse. Daniel: Me, too. Cheeseburger special to go, please. Jen: I never should've accused my mom of seeing rex behind your back. I was just mad at her -- Daniel: Lindsay's play time is her own business. Jen: But I just said it. She likes you. Daniel: Look, you know what really bothers me? It's the fact that I nearly watched my son go to jail because of drugs, all because of you. Jen: Because of me? Daniel: From now on, you stay away from him. At Capricorn, Rex approaches Lindsay. Rex: I got your message. You wanted to see me? Lindsay: Not like that. I told you, we shouldn't see each other anymore. At Rodi’s, Jen tries to get Daniel to see her side of things. Jen: Look, I had no idea that Riley was bringing those drugs onto the plane. Daniel: Yeah, but u were planning on sharing them after your little pilgrimage, weren't you? Jen: No! We were splitting up at Heathrow I was going to visit my husband. Daniel: Oh, your husband. Well, you know, I'm well acquainted with your rap sheet. Two husbands already, burglary, alcohol poisoning, hanging out with a prostitute who was murdered. Tell me something -- do all Llanview coeds do a work-study with hookers, or is it just you? Jen: I am not on trial. Daniel: Listen, I'm not out to persecute you, but I want to protect my son. Now, we all know that you are way out of his league. Just stay away from him. Jen: Ok, fine, I'll stay away from him. Daniel: That's all I ask. Jen: I just wonder if you'd be such a jerk to me if you weren't striking out with my mom. At Capricorn, Rex continues to play Lindsay like a fiddle. Rex: Why stop seeing each other? Aren't we having fun? Lindsay: Because our relationship is inappropriate. I need to be picking on someone my own age. Rex: Fat and bald? You'll love that. Lindsay: Thank you. Rex: I'm sorry. Lindsay: I'm seeing someone now, and he is neither one of those things. Rex: How's the sex? Anything like ours, or just nice? Lindsay: We haven't gone there yet. Rex: Oh. I rest my case. Lindsay: Rex, I'm in therapy. I'm trying to make things better. This isn't helping me. Rex: There's no way I'm letting you dump me.
At the airport, Marcie and Al continue to talk. They are sitting on a bench next to each other and Marcie is thumbing through a magazine. Al: So, this professor from Tufts you're meeting -- what do you hear about him? Is he a nice guy? Marcie: Who said it was a guy? Al: So it's not. Marcie: Why do you sound so pleased about that? Al: I don't know. I like smart chicks. I'm trying to bridge the gap. Marcie: I cannot decide whether you actually like my company or if you're just being a smart aleck. Al: Maybe a little bit of both. Marcie: Michael, you do not have to stay with me. Al: So, this professor -- what, you got to entertain her for the night? Is that the deal? Marcie: No, I just have to, you know, bring her to her hotel and thank her for coming. Al: So, could be you're done by dinnertime. Marcie: Maybe. Marcie’s cell phone rings. Al: You want to go and have a bite to eat? Marcie: Excuse me. (Answers phone) Uh -- hello? (listens then hangs up) Great. Thanks for wasting half of my day. (Looks at Al) Well, the professor went home, and now she's going to be back in the morning, so -- Al: Well, you know, it's not a waste if you meet me for dinner. Marcie: Ok.
Al is suddenly pulled out of Michael’s body and is taken to the foggy place of shadows. Luna: You are making progress. Al: You have got to stop doing that. Luna: What? Al: Well, at least she finally sees that there's a good side to Michael -- I mean, now that I've made a good side. Luna: Mm-hmm. Al: This is going to work. She is going to see that it's Al inside of this body, and we're going to be back together. Luna: Well, sort of. Al: "Well, sort of," what? Luna: Well, there's just this one teeny, tiny little detail. You see, when Marcie really does recognize your soul in Michael, it's because you really have actually become Michael, and all the memories that you've ever had will vanish forever. Al: What? Al: So I'm going to lose all my memories of Marcie. Those are the best part of my life. Luna: Well, were, honey. But, see, you're still going to have memories of -- but they'll be Michael’s. Al: No. I don't want his memories, ok? The guy's life sucks. Luna: Not anymore, not with you in there running around, you and Marcie making new memories. Al: It just doesn't make any sense. I mean, I thought the whole point of this was so that she would see that I'm really Al. Luna: Darling, there is no Al anymore. Your soul has moved into Michael. But it's still his life and his body, and he's got a right to his life. Al: No, this isn't right. I thought that he was supposed to disappear so that I could come back! You got to be able to do something about this. Luna: I can't do anything, not what you want me to do! Al: Well, then I need to talk to somebody who can. Your boss, the person who makes all of the rules -- I need to talk to them. Luna: I -- Al: Luna! Luna: Oh, all right, all right! All right. But I'm going to warn you -- that means that Michael is going to be roaming around here, and he's going to be being his usual self. Al: I don't care. We need to straighten this out now! Al: Hello? (looks around) Hello? I need to talk to somebody in charge here! Hello? I need to talk to somebody who can help me! Is anybody here? He spots Little Gabrielle. Al: Hi. You're -- you're Gabrielle, right? Do you remember me? You're going to be my daughter -- mine and Marcie’s daughter. Little Gabrielle: Maybe not. I'm never going to be born if my dad keeps whining and moaning about the rules.
At Rodi’s, Marcie spots Daniel and Jen at the bar and walks up to them. Daniel: Keep the change. Bartender: Thanks. Marcie: Hi. Jen: Hi. Marcie: What's up? Jen: Oh, not-t-t much. Just getting accused of a love life I don't even have. Daniel: Uh -- yeah. I think we have an understanding here. Jen: What, no vodka to go? Daniel: Let me give you free advice. A girl with your lifestyle shouldn't make an enemy of the D.A. Marcie. Marcie: Bye. What was that about? Jen: The D.A.'s just mad because his son got busted for drugs this morning. Bad for his career, I guess. Marcie: Yeah, but what does that have to do with you? Jen: I don't know. I just got on the plane with Riley. What? Marcie: You were going to get on a plane, go on a trip with Flash's boyfriend? Jen: To London to see Joe. Marcie: Ahem. Jen: Great. Now you've got a problem with me, too? Marcie: Doesn't matter. You don't want to hear what I have to say. Jen: Hey, no, pile it on like everyone else. Marcie: Ok, fine. I think that you should slow down a little. Wait around for the right guy, Jen. You just keep throwing yourself at other people's boyfriends.
At Capricorn, Rex is working on a virtuoso performance. Rex: Don't you watch talk shows? Because a guy who's fun instead of appropriate is what all women want. Lindsay: Be that as it may, I have other things to think about -- like my daughter, and she's very possessive of both of us. Rex: But she has no use for us. Lindsay: I don't want to hurt her. Rex: I don't want to hurt jen either. So we just simply make sure she doesn't find out. Lindsay: You're terrible. Rex: Yeah, I know. So, listen, why don't you come back to my apartment, and if you can convince me, then I'll keep my hands off you. Or we can talk about it outside
At Rodi’s, Marcie and Jen continue their conversation. Jen: Riley and I are just friends. Barely that. He's just a guy to carry my suitcase. Marcie: Yeah, well, I hope so. Because I would hate to see Flash’s life ruined because you're trying to get kicks. Jen: Oh, my god, you're acting like I'm some kind of home wrecker. Marcie: I'm sorry, all right? I'm sorry, Jen, but I'm getting a little frustrated. I am trying to help you here, and I really don't think you want my help anymore. Jen: Then don't Marcie: Fine! But this is just not about you anymore. You ruined your marriage because you fooled around with Rex. Now you're going after guys that other people count on. Jen: You mean like Michael McBain? You're still mad because I showed him a little bit of attention. Marcie: No, it's not about what you did. It's how you did it. You're supposed to be my friend! Jen: I am your friend! But make up your mind. Is he your boyfriend or not? Marcie: Unlike you, Jen, I do not change my boyfriends like I change my underwear! I've got to go to the bathroom. Marcie rushes off. Jen: You think if I wanted I steal him, I couldn't? Michael walks into Rodi’s and walks up to Jen. Michael: Hi. Jen: Hey. What are you doing here? Michael: I think I'm on a date with Marcie. Jen: Well, I wish you two would make up your mind. Michael: What do you mean? Jen: I mean, I think she just stood you up.
Back in the foggy place of shadows, Al tries to get through to Little Gabrielle. Al: Listen, I need your help here, ok? This isn't working out the way we had planned. Little Gabrielle: Yes, it is. Your spirit makes Michael whole again. And he can keep your soul alive. All you'll be losing are memories. Al: Well, my memories are what make me who I am. Little Gabrielle: You have to have faith in the future now -- in a new way, to be with Marcie so I can be born. Al's gone. You have to accept it, and so does Marcie. Al: And you'll be our daughter? Little Gabrielle: Yes. Isn't that what you want? Al: Well, of course that's what I want. Little Gabrielle: Then stop wasting time. Get back to your body before it's too late. :: Too late? Al: Too late for what? At Rodi’s, Jen continues to lie to Michael. Michael: Maybe Marcie just got delayed. Jen: Ok, sure. Come on, let me buy you a drink. Michael and Jen walk off to a corner table in the back of Rodi’s. She starts kissing Michael and he kisses back. Michael: Ok. So why is this my lucky day? Jen: Well, you saved my life once, remember? Sometimes I just -- you know, I like to show someone how grateful I can really be. Little Gabrielle’s comments worried Al. Al: Luna! Luna? Luna: Are you feeling any better now? Did your daughter remind you of what's really important here, darling? Al: I have to trust her. More importantly, I have to get back into Michael’s body. Luna: Whew. Oh, I'm glad to hear you're so eager. Al: No, we really have to hurry. I have a bad feeling that he's doing something really stupid right now. Thursday, February 5, 2004 Marcie comes back into the main room and spots Michael and Jen going at it hot and heavy. She is crushed. In the meanwhile, a disembodied Al who is now at Rodi’s tries desperately to get through to her. Al: Marcie? Marcie, it's not what you think, ok? It's not me kissing Jen right now -- it's Michael, but I'm not inside his body, so I can't control him. Marcie grips the back of a chair. Al: Oh, no, please. Please don't cry. Oh, I can't stand to see you hurt like this. Marcie sinks into a squatting position. Al: Marcie? Please. Don't -- don't cry. It's going to be ok. It's going to be ok. Al races around to find Luna. Al: Luna! Luna! Luna: I told you not to question things, but do you ever listen to me? You never listen to me! Al: What was I supposed to do? You told me that as soon as she fell in love with me, I was going to forget who I am. I had to see if we could get that changed. Luna: Did you? Did you do that? Al: No. They said that we would sort of fuse together, you know? It would be Michael’s body and my soul. Luna: But, darling, his life, his memories. Al: (sighs) It’s going to take some getting used to. Luna: Well, you're going to have to get used to it if you want to get Marcie back. Sugar, darling, love -- it's like a leap of faith. Are you ready to take that plunge here or not? Al: Put me back in. Put me back into Michael’s body. Luna: It's not that simple! Al: Well, there's got to be something we can do. I mean, I can't just let Marcie leave without making this right. Luna: Oh, my goddess. I -- I will be right back. Al: Hurry up! Jen spots Marcie and disentangles herself and rushes after Marcie. Jen: Marcie, wait, wait, wait. Please don't be mad, ok? I'm sorry, but you guys aren't even that close. You haven't even slept with him yet. Marcie: Sometimes there's more to a relationship than just sleeping with someone. Jen: Well, and obviously, sometimes there isn’t. Look, it's better that you know now, right, before it went too far? Marcie: Yeah, yeah. So you want me to thank you for this? That's what you want me to do? Jen: Look, your issue is with Michael, not with me. Marcie: Oh – (chuckles bitterly) I have issues with both of you. Luna reappears. Luna: Oh, sorry it took so long, darling. Al: Oh. You got to stop doing that to me. Luna: Oh, well -- Al: Listen, we still have some damage control to do here, ok? Luna: Ok. Al: So put me back into Michael’s body right now. Luna: I -- I can’t. Al: You have to. Luna: Well, I -- I don't have permission. And the higher-ups -- they're not too happy about your lack of faith, either. Al: Well, tell them I'm sorry. Luna: But you got to mean it. Al: I do. Luna, I really do. You know what? Fine. I screwed up, ok? Luna: Ok. Al: So you can't put me back into Michael’s body, that's fine, but Marcie shouldn't have to pay for that. Please. Help her to find somebody. Help her to be happy. Find somebody for her that -- that will love her the same way I do. Michael approaches Marcie. Michael: Look, you said -- Marcie: It doesn't really matter, does it? Michael: Fine. Michael walks to the bar. Jen approaches him. Jen: Marcie's still here. Michael: Yeah? So? Jen: You don't care? Michael: Why should I when I'm here with you? Al: Marcie's leaving. Luna: I -- I know, I know! And you said all the right things about how you only care about her happiness and you don't give a hoot about yourself anymore. They love that kind of talk upstairs. Al: Great. Then how come I'm not back in Michael’s body yet? Al is drawn back into Michael’s body. Jen senses the change in him. Jen: What's wrong? Al: Um -- I'm -- I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to give you the wrong idea. Um -- I want to be with Marcie. I'm sorry. I got to go and find her before it's too late. (rushes after Marcie) Marcie? Marcie? Marcie, wait -- Marcie: Listen, why can't you just please just leave me alone, ok? Al: Listen, you have to understand. The last thing I ever want to see is you cry -- oh! Marcie: (slaps Al) Michael McBain, you are a jackass and I never want to talk to you ever again. Do you understand me? Al: Got it, loud and clear. Luna: Oh, goddess. Are you all right? Al: Uh, yeah, I'm ok. Did you see that? Luna: Yeah. Wow, but, you know, that's a good sign, it is. Al: How? She hates me. How am I ever going to get that woman to fall in love with me by Valentine’s Day? It's impossible. Luna: Well, no, oh, no. You got your work cut out for you, but she's mad and she's jealous and that means she cares. Al: You had better be right. Luna: But you better get cracking. Go on!
Friday, February 6, 2004 At Rodi’s, Al continues to try to do damage control. Al: Marcie -- Marcie, please. Listen, I can explain. Marcie: Listen, I saw enough. Al: You were totally right to slap me, ok? I definitely deserved that. Marcie: No, I don't want to talk about this anymore, ok, to either one of you. Jen: Listen, don't blame Michael, ok? It was my fault. I came on to him. Marcie: Yeah, well, he could've -- he could've said no! Jen: Just listen to him. He really cares about you. I'll see you at home, ok? Marcie: No. No, you won’t. I'm moving out. I don't want to live with you anymore.
Lindsay: You do know this is going to end badly? Rex: Maybe so, but it's starting out pretty good. Lindsay: Stop it. Rex: You know, we're incredible together. You can't deny that. Lindsay: You do understand that jen can never find out about this? Rex: As far as I'm concerned, it's none of her business. Lindsay: Where are you going? Rex: I have to check on a few things on U.V. Lindsay: I'll see you later? Rex: Yeah. I'd like that.
At Rodi’s, Jen is shocked by Marcie’s declaration. Jen: You're moving out of my place just because of Michael? I didn't even think you liked him. Marcie: Ok, all right, fine. You know what, you're right. I did say that I didn't like him, but did you ever stop to think that maybe I can't admit that I like Michael because I'm not ready to admit that Al is gone? Jen, if you were any kind of a friend -- if you'd just listen to what I had to say, you would've picked that up! Jen: I don't know why I did it! Marcie: Yeah, well, I do! You're so wrapped up in yourself that you'll do anything to get a rise out of a guy, and it doesn't matter who it is, and it doesn't matter who you hurt. Jen: You're right, ok? I'm sorry. I just -- Marcie: I can't believe it took me this long to figure you out. I really thought you were my friend, and when I needed a friend, you just stab me in the back. I don't want to be around you anymore! Jen: Marcie, don't -- don't -- Marcie: Don't do what? Don't do what? You don't want me to stand up for myself? You know, if you want to get yourself in trouble, and if you want to continue to put yourself on this path of pushing people away, well, go ahead, do it! I can't do it anymore. Jen, you lost Joe. Now you're going to lose my friendship. And if you're not careful, then the only person you're going to have left is your mother! Luna: Jeepers, that poor baby. Al: Jen was her best friend. You've got to let me help her. Luna: Well, go ahead. Al: No, not as Michael. As me, Al. Look, just for a minute. Luna: No, no, it wont be enough. Al: Listen, I promise that I won't tell her what's really going on, ok? I'll just give her enough to get her through. Please. Look, it's almost 10:00. Just a few minutes, please. Luna: God -- Al: Please? Luna: Oh, all right! Fine, but you listen to me. Just five more minutes, and this is the last special favor I'm doing for you, Al. Five more minutes. And then from now till Valentine’s Day, you are on your own, all right? The rest is up to you. Al: Thank you.
At Rex’s apartment, he is sitting around half-naked. There is a knock on the door. He answers it and Jen is standing there. Rex: Can't stay away from me, can you? Jen: Can I come in?
At Rodi’s, Marcie is sitting at a table alone. A waitress passes close by. Marcie: Oh, excuse me. Can I have a glass of ice water? Waitress: No problem. Marcie: Thanks. Luna: All right, five minutes. Not one second more. Al: Thank you. In the background, “You Make Me Feel Brand New” starts playing. Singer: My love I'll never find the words my love to tell you how I feel
my love Al approaches Marcie and stretches out his hand to her. Al: Can I have this dance? Singer: Mere words Marcie: Al? Singer: Could not explain Marcie floats into Al’s arms and they begin to dance. Singer: Precious love you held my life within your hands created
everything I am taught me how to live again only you cared when I needed a
friend believed in me through thick and thin this song is for you filled with
gratitude and love god bless you Al: Marcie, you got to give Michael another chance. Marcie: Why? Al: I can't explain. Marcie: Michael is a jerk. I've given him plenty of chances. He doesn't deserve any more. Al: He really cares for you. Marcie: You're the only guy I want. I'm not going to settle for anything less. Al: Marcie, I'm gone. Marcie: No! No, you're not. You're right here! Al: Only for a few minutes. Marcie, you need someone to give you what you need, a future. Now, what if because you're hanging on to me you never get married? You never have children? Marcie: Yeah, that's ok. Al: No, that is not ok! That is everything that you have always wanted. That's what I want for you. Marcie: No, but I don't want it without you! Al: Even if it's not with me, it's ok because I will always be part of it. Do you remember the last time I saw you? Marcie: Yes. Al: When I sent you to Angels Square? Marcie: Yes. Al: That's what I was trying to tell you. Marcie: No, I'm not listening. Al: Marcie, listen to me. You can have everything that you have ever dreamed of. It's right in front of your face. You just have to let it in. Don't let it slip away. Look. Look deep and hard. Your future is right here. Little Gabrielle appears. Little Gabrielle: Hi. Marcie: I don't understand. Who is she? Little Gabrielle: Listen to him. He loves you, and he knows what's best for you, mommy. Marcie: "Mommy"? Al: Marcie, remember, look into his eyes. Look into his eyes and you'll see. I need more time. Luna: Honey, time is up. Al: No, no! Our daughter was getting through to her. I know it! Luna: No, no, no, I cannot freeze time forever. I can't do it. Al: Please, Luna, not yet! Al is pulled out of the scene and things revert to the way they were before. Marcie: Excuse me? Can I have a glass of ice water? Waitress: No problem. Marcie: Thanks. Al: I have to make her fall in love with me. Luna: Well, darling, you better get cracking. But you only have till Valentine’s Day.
At Rex’s apartment, he tries to read Jen’s pulse. Rex: What happened? Jen: What didn't happen? Riley's dad thinks I'm some kind of drug smuggler or hooker or something. Rex: What? Jen: Yeah -- forget it. You know what? Everyone hates me. You know, every single person I was with today couldn't wait to make me feel bad about myself. Rex: Who are you talking about? Jen: Marcie. But she's right, you know? Every -- every relationship I have I screw up. With Cristian and Joe and now my friendship with her. And soon I'm -- I'm not going to have anybody left but my mom, and that's just because mm related to her. Rex: You still have me. They start kissing.
At Rodi’s, as Marcie sits at the table waiting for her water, she smiles as she listens to the song still playing on the jukebox. Singer: God bless you Waitress: Here you go. Marcie: Thanks. Singer: You make me feel brand new Al, once again in Michael’s body, walks up to her. Al: You look like you're feeling better. Marcie: Shhhhhh. I want to hear this song. It's beautiful. Singer: You make me feel brand new Al: You're beautiful. Simply Red -- it's one of my favorites. Marcie: Really? They're my all-time favorite. I always wanted to hear them play live. Al was going to take me once, but it didn't work out. Al: Can I get you a soda or something? Marcie: No. I want to be alone. Al: Ok. No problem, Marcie. Whatever you need. Listen, I just want to apologize for that thing with Jen. It was really stupid. It didn't -- it didn't mean anything to either of us. Singer: You make me feel brand-new God has blessed me with you…you make
me feel brand new
At Rex’s apartment, Rex and Jen are kissing. The phone rings. Rex: Damn it, shut up! Jen: Just let the answering machine get it. Rex: It's unplugged. The phone rings again. Rex: I'm not home! Jen: You know what? I really -- I can't concentrate. Just answer it. Rex: All right. This mood's ruined anyway. (answers the phone) What? Al: Hey, it's Michael McBain. (Al is standing outside of Rodi’s talking on his cell phone) Rex: What do you want? Al: I just was talking to the director of the college radio station, and I pitched him an idea. Well, I was thinking maybe Marcie could do a special broadcast, you know, of songs and poems for young lovers on Valentine’s Day. You know, we could throw in a couple of tapes of the voice of the night, and I thought it would be a good idea, you know, kind of cool. Rex: And I care because -- Al: Well, I was thinking we could broadcast live from Ultra Violet. You know, that'd be pretty neat. Rex: Live tapes? Sounds exciting. Al: No, man, I'm going to get Simply Red to play. Rex: In your dreams. Al: Trust me, dude. You put me in touch with them, and I will convince them to sing. Rex: Yeah, fine, whatever. But I can't do it tonight, ok? Thank you. There. No more interruptions. Where are you going? Jen: This was a bad idea. Rex: No, no, no, no, no. It was a good idea. It was a very, very good idea.
Marcie walks by Al outside of Rodi’s. Al: You're leaving? Well, before you go, I just want to say that what I did to you tonight was really rotten. And I'm not trying to justify it because there is no justification. But there is an explanation. It's not going to make any sense now, but it will on Valentine’s Day. Marcie: I'm not sure I'm following you. Al: Will you go out with me on Valentine’s Day? I know, it sounds totally crazy. I must sound like a total lunatic to you right now, but if you could find it in your heart to just trust me, I promise you, you won't be disappointed. Marcie, please. Come on, just give me another chance. There are so many things I have to make up to you. Marcie: Ok, I'll go out with you.
At Rex’s apartment, Jen walks away from him. Rex: Where are you going? Jen: Bathroom. Rex plugs in the answering machine. A minute later the phone rings. Rex's voice: I'm out, people. Leave a message. (answering machine beeps) Jen walks into the room just as Lindsay’s voice can be heard. Lindsay: I'm soaking in a hot, hot tub, and I'm thinking of – Rex leaps to pull the plug on the machine. Jen: Was that my mom?
