 The End Game & A Heartbreaking Non-Twist
OLTL: 2/13/04 & 2/16/04

Friday, February 13, 2004

At the college radio station, Marcie tries to get things ready for her special tribute show.

Marcie: This thing is useless!

Man: Marcie --

Marcie: What?

Man: Hurry up. You're on in 15.

Marcie: Minutes?

Man: Seconds.

Marcie: Seconds? Oh, no. All right.

Man: Here.

Marcie: I'm wet. Oh, no, live?

Man: We're live in five, four, three, two --

Marcie: This is Marcie Walsh. If you could just bear with me for a few seconds, I have a great -- a great broadcast planned for you today. I'm going to read love songs -- play love songs and read love poetry for you. And, you know, I was on my way here. I was waiting for the bus. Well, the bus never showed up, so I decided to walk. And then of course, when I was walking, my umbrella turned inside out. (chuckles sadly)

Marcie: Oh, don't you love that when that happens -- and on Valentine’s Day. Well, tonight's show is dedicated to the voice of the night, Al Holden. He was -- he was the love of my life. And well, I don't know exactly what is on this tape, but if he were here tonight, these are the songs that he would have played for us to help us get through the night.

Music plays

At Capricorn, Al is sitting at the bar and Luna is perched on top of it. Al looks at the small radio that is in front of him.

Al: Since when does she go on till 11:30? She's never going to make it here on time.

Luna: Would you just breathe, honey? Don't panic. Just breathe, ok?

Al: She's dedicating this show to Al. She says that he's the love of her life. She's never going to realize that I am Al inside of this stupid body.

Luna: Have a little bit of faith, would you? Come on! You've made it this far.

Al: If it doesn't happen by midnight, Al is gone.

Luna has a panic attack. She is suddenly at Angel Square.

Luna: I should never have let Marcie see Al this one last time!  Uh. And that Voice of the Night broadcast -- bad, bad, bad! By the time it is all done, she's going to be more in love with Al than she ever was before. Oh, God, please help me.

Megan: I'm not God, but she and I are pretty close.

Luna: Megan, are you going to fire me?

Megan: Why would I fire you?

Luna: I think I blew it.

Megan: Have faith, Luna. You know, there are times when love is stronger than death.

At the radio station, Marcie continues her show.

Singer: In this life of living, yeah just all I ever wanted was you yeah, you all I ever wanted all I ever needed all I ever wanted was you

Marcie: Last year, on Valentine's Day, I had no idea who the Voice of the Night was, much less that we were going to meet and fall in love. And even though Al -- he's not with us anymore -- well, I'm never going to forget the love and the magic that he showed me how to see. So, Al, if you're listening, Happy Valentine’s Day. Who knows what this year's going to bring, right?

At Capricorn, RJ greets the crowd.

R.J.: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Capricorn. Simply Red will take the stage in a little while. But in the meantime, I need you to eat, drink, enjoy yourselves, because tonight is going to be a very special night.

The crowd cheers and applauds.  At the bar, Jessica and Natalie are talking.

Jessica: I miss him, too.

Al walks up to them.

Al: Hey. Natalie.

Natalie: Michael, hey. We came.

Al: Yeah. Listen, I hope I wasn't being insensitive by asking you to come here.

Natalie: No, no. I mean, it beats staying home alone, I think.

Al: Aren't you supposed to be in Chicago visiting Antonio?

Jessica: Yeah. The storm was too bad, so I couldn't go.

Al: Well, that sucks.

Jessica: Yeah, it does. Well, where's Marcie? Isn't she supposed to be here?

At the radio station, Marcie continues to pay tribute to Al.

Marcie: Al was -- he was the love of my life. He was my first love, and -- well, I hate to admit this, but before I met him, I pictured romance and love as swooning and kissing, you know, hearts and flowers, but -- well, that's not what real love is. It's -- it's sharing a secret. It's looking across the room at your guy and knowing exactly what's going on in his mind. It's storing up stories all day long and not being able to wait to get home to tell him. And on good days I still laugh and I still smile because -- well, I know that Al is always going to be with me, forever.

At Angel Square, Luna and Megan continue their confab.

Luna: I don't know whose bright idea this was!

Megan: Luna --

Luna: All right, it was mine. It was mine, ok? But you're the one that gave me the old -- to tell me it was ok. So what do I do now, boss?

Megan: Well, if I were you, I would do nothing. How's that? Doing nothing -- can you do that? It's not midnight yet.

Luna: Wait a second. Are you telling me, without telling me, that -- that it can all work out and that Marcie could see Al inside of Michael after all?

Megan: Well, that's up to Marcie and Al. All we can do is open the door. It's up to them to walk through it.

Luna: Those two sure don't need any help.

Megan: Oh, they're young. Everything and everyone is against them, but love is all they need.

Adriana: Shh! Someone will hear us.

River: I don't care. How'd you get out?

Adriana: I told Dorian I was really tired, and I went up to my room and I turned off all the lights and then I snuck out the window.

River: Wow. Good for you. Well, for me.

Adriana laughs.

River: Hey, you feel weird, sneaking around on Dorian now that you know she's your mom?

Adriana: Funny how she just ignores me and then suddenly is interested when there's $30 million.

River: That's a lot of money.

Adriana: I don't care about the money. I don't even care about the rain or anything!

River: Hey, listen to me. Someday we're going to be together, just you and me, and no one can stop us.

Adriana: What do we do till someday comes?

River: We're going to get married, just like I promised you.

At the radio station, Marcie continues to talk about Al.

Marcie: Sometimes when I'd look at Al, I'd get terrified, you know, something was going to take him away from me, a car accident or something we did ourselves to ruin things. It's terrible, but misunderstandings -- they just tear people apart all the time. I told Al what I was thinking, and he told me he was as scared as I was. So we swore then and there that we'd never let anything tear us apart. Not even death. Not even death. The best gift life can give you is a great love. But even they can get on our nerves. They can make us mad; they can make us say things we regret. We love them so much, but they get under our skin. You know, they can make us miserable. They can give us joy. They know us. They let us be us. But if you push your great love away, you're pushing away your own soul.

At Capricorn, Al is getting really worried.

Al: RJ, Hey, RJ, Listen, do you think maybe you could hold the band off for just a couple more minutes?

R.J.: Well, it shouldn't be a problem. They've only just arrived, and I'm sure they'll want to take some time out to eat that meal I sent in.

Al exhales.

Evangeline approaches them.

Evangeline: You're the miracle worker that brought Simply Red to Llanview.

Al: Well, the miracle hasn't happened yet.

Evangeline: Sounds like there's a woman involved.

R.J.: Then shouldn't she be here by now?

Al: I think she's going to get here after her radio broadcast. See, I figured she'd get here by the time Simply Red did their first set, but she doesn't know they're playing. It's a surprise.

Evangeline: Oh.

R.J.: So why am I still looking at you? Go. Take your butt to the radio station and bring her back here.

Al: Right.

Al takes off running.

Marcie continues to remember Al.

Marcie: Al and I took a poetry survey class at L.U. Together, and he really wasn't crazy about all that lyrical stuff, but there was one that he liked by Yeats. "Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths, inwrought with golden and silver light, the blue and the dim and the dark cloths of night and the light and the half-light, I would spread the cloth at your feet."

Flashback of Marcie and Al sitting on a bench in the park reading from a book of poetry:

Marcie: "But I, being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet. Tread softly, because you tread on my dreams."

Al: "Remember me when I am gone away, gone far away to the silent land."

Marcie: Why'd you stop?

Al: It's just another drunken Irish poet writing about death.

Marcie: It's Christina Rossetti. She's a long way from Irish and she's definitely not a drunk.

Al: Oh. Well, you and me -- we don't have to worry about things like death anymore, not since you got me off the drugs.

Marcie: I couldn't have listened to you read it back then, but -- it would have been too sad, but now it's beautiful.

Al: I'm never going to leave you, Marcie.

Marcie: Read it for me, please? Please?

Marcie is standing in the pouring rain in front of the Luna statue in Angel Square.  She sits on the bench and lets the rain pour over her.

Luna: It's 25 till 12:00. We've got to do something.

Megan: Luna, you've broken enough rules already. It's up to Marcie and Al now.

At the radio station, Al finds an empty sound booth.

Al: Hey, where -- where is Marcie? Do you know where she went?

Man: No, I don't know, but she was real upset when she left.

Marcie remembers a line from a poem she and Al read that summer.

Al's voice: "Better by far you should forget and smile, than that you should remember and be sad."

At Capricorn, RJ takes the stage.  The crowd cheers.

R.J.: At long last, the moment we have all been waiting for. Performing "Sunrise" from their new album, "Home," please welcome Simply Red.

Simply Red starts to play.

Simply Red: (claps hands) Come on.

Simply Red: (sings) As I look into your eyes I see the sunrise the light behind your face helps me realize we sleep and sometimes love until the moon shines maybe the next time I'll be yours and maybe you'll be mine I don't know if it's even in your mind at all it could be me at this moment in time is it in your mind at all? It could be me it should be me

Backup Singers: Oh, my, oh, my

Simpy Red: Forever forever wondering through live will love come home to you? And the love you want forever will they be true to you? We sleep and sometimes love until the moon shines maybe the next time I'll be yours and maybe you'll be mine I don't know if it's even in your mind at all it could be me

Simply Red: I don't know if it's even in your mind at all it could be me at this moment in time is it in your mind at all? It could be me it should be me

Backup Singers: Oh, my, oh, my

Simply Red: Forever at this moment in time is it in your mind at all? It could be me it should be me

Singers: Oh, my, oh, my

Simply Red: Forever forever forever

The crowd cheers and applauds.

Marcie is finally at Capricorn.  She is standing next to Riley, leaning against the back of one of the booths.

Riley: Pretty amazing, huh?

Marcie: Are you kidding? They're my favorite. Have you seen Michael McBain?

Riley: Not for a while, but, you know, he's the one who got Simply Red here tonight to play.

Marcie: Really?

Riley: For you.

At Angel Square, Al is almost frantic.

Al: Where is she? I got to find her right now.

Luna: Darling, I -- I can't say.

Al: It's almost midnight! I have to! You have to tell me where she is! I got to find her!

Luna: Honey, if I do, I'm going to blow this whole thing, and I've got to have faith in the power of love.

Al: Faith?

Luna: Yes, faith.

Al: There's no time for faith, Luna! You got to tell me where she is!

Al: How am I supposed to find her now, Luna? I got, like, five minutes!

Luna: Faith. Pray for a miracle. Pray for a miracle!

Al: Oh, god, please.

Al has a sudden realization.

Al: I know where she is. Capricorn.

Luna: Yes! Oh! Oh, my! Oh, darling! Good luck. Go love her. Oh, go! Go love her! Be happy!

Al: Thank you.

Luna: Whew. Thank you. Whoever did that.

Megan: Now do you have faith?

Luna: I thought we weren't supposed to interfere.

Megan: I didn’t. The mortals did it all on their own.

Luna: Now, I see you didn't come all this way just to teach me that lesson.

Megan: No. I have my own task to accomplish. Someone needs my help.

Al comes into Capricorn and spots Marcie.

Simply Red: My baby on you

Marcie: Excuse me. I'm sorry about that.

Al: Marcie, please, don't go.

Marcie: Michael, I'm really wiped out.

Al: I know. I heard your broadcast for Al, and I understand how you must be feeling.

Marcie: You think you do, but you don’t. I mean, it's nothing personal.

Al: I get that. Did -- did you like the band?

Marcie: Are you kidding me? They were amazing. I don't know what to say except thanks.

Al: Will you dance with me? Please? Before midnight? Just one dance before the night is over? It's really important. Please, please, please, please?

Marcie: We have no music.

Simply Red begins to sing.

Simply Red: (sings) My love I'd never find the words my love

Marcie: Ok, ok.

Simply Red: To tell you how I feel my love mere words could not explain

Marcie and Al dance.  He tries to get her to really look at him.  To see him in Michael.

Simply Rec: Precious love you held my life within your hands created everything I am taught me how to live again only you came when I needed a friend believed in me through thick and thin this song is for you filled with gratitude and love god bless you you make me feel brand new for god blessed me with you you make me feel brand new I sing this song 'cause you make me feel brand new

Al: Marcie? You ok?

Marcie: I feel kind of funny.

Al: Look at me. Your future is right in front of you. Look in my eyes, Marcie. You just keep looking, ok, and I swear to you, you will find exactly what you are looking for. What do you see, Marcie?

Simply Red: Precious friend with you I'll always have a friend you're someone whom I can depend

Marcie rushes out of Capricorn.

Monday, February16, 2004

Al catches up with Marcie in Angel Square.

Al: Mar-- Marcie? Marcie, wait. Marcie, why'd you run off like that?

Marcie: I'm sorry, I couldn't stay.

Al: Why not?

Marcie: I don't know. You know, I think that I'm -- I think I'm coming down with something. You know, was it warm in there? I think I might have the flu.

Al: Marcie, look at me. Look at me the way you looked at me at Capricorn. What do you see?

Marcie: I -- I don't know. I don't see anything.

Al: Yes, you do.

Marcie: No, I don’t. No, I don't, ok? I don't see anything. I know that I'm supposed to see something, but I mean, why can't you just tell me.

Al: Ok. I mean, you got to know anyway, so, fine. Here's the deal.

Marcie stares at him.

Al: You want to know what's going on? Here's the deal.

Luna: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa -- wait just a second. You know the rules. Darling, you give her information she's not supposed to have and your soul is as good as -- Michael goes back to being Michael, and Marcie is left alone. And you know that little girl? She never gets to come down to this earth to live her life. Darling, you don't have to tell her. Just -- just trust her. Trust in her love.

Marcie: Hello? Are you going to tell me what's going on?

Al: "Better by far that you should forget and be happy than that you should remember and be sad."

Marcie: That's --

Al: Christina Rossetti. She's one of my favorites.

Marcie: Yeah, Al and I studied her together. I remember thinking how moving it was, you know, about losing someone that you love.

Al: But not wanting them to stay sad, even if it meant that they had to forget you.

Marcie: That's what Al said. How would you know that?

Al: Me and Al are a lot alike.

Marcie: Is -- is that all it is? I mean, is there something that you want to -- is there something that you want to tell me?

Al: You tell me. You know, they say that the eyes are a window to the soul. Look in my eyes. Look deep and hard. What do you see?

Marcie looks into his eyes.

Al: Marcie, what do you see?

Marcie: I don't know what I see. I just know what I feel.

Al: What do you feel?

Marcie: Al -- I feel him all around me.

Al: Yeah. Yeah, because he's here. He is right here, right now.

Marcie: What do you mean? What do you mean?

Al: Kiss me.

Marcie: What?

Al: I want you to kiss me.

Marcie: No, I -- I don't know. I don't --

Al: Just do it.

Marcie: Ok.

Al: Trust me.

They kiss.

Marcie: Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. Is it -- is it really you?

Al: Yeah.

Marcie: Oh, my -- Al, you're back. Oh, Al.

Marcie is exuberant.  She laughs joyfully.

Marcie: Pinch me.

Al: Ok.

Marcie: It's not a dream. I mean, you're real. You're really real, aren't you?

Al: How'd that feel?

Marcie: Unbelievable. I mean, how?

Al: Can I tell her already? You know, because she figured it out all on her own and, I mean, I'm kind of running out of time here. It's not like I'm going to get another chance.

Luna: Well, just go for it, Sugar.

Marcie: Um -- who --

Al: Oh --

Marcie: Who are you talking to?

Al: Yeah, that. Uh, Luna. I talked to you about Luna before, haven't I?

Marcie: Yeah, your dad's wife. I mean, but she's dead, isn't she?

Al: Yep, she's dead. But she's here like I always will be.

Marcie: I -- I'm really not getting this. I mean, I know that you look like Michael McBain and I know that you're not --

Al: I'm sort of subletting the space. You see, when I died, I had no body. Michael McBain did.

Marcie: Yeah, well, he was --

Al: Sort of empty, kind of soulless. Well, see, it was perfect. You know, he needed a soul, I needed a body. So the day that he almost died, they took my soul and they slipped it into his body. Luna's been in charge of the whole operation. She's an angel. I mean, she's really an angel, you know, like with wings and everything.

Marcie: Wow, she's an angel? And you -- you've been here ever since.

Al: Well, except for a couple of times when I got pulled off the job and --

Marcie: That would explain why you were a jerk sometimes, like when you made out with Jen.

Al: Michael made out with Jen, not me. And I did everything I could to make it up to you once I got back in that body.

Marcie: Why couldn't you tell me all of this sooner?

Al: I couldn't tell anyone -- not John, Michael’s brother. Not you, not anybody.

Marcie: Yeah, but -- but why?

Al: Because those were the rules. You had to see me inside of Michael’s body by yourself, by faith, by love, and by tonight, Valentine's Day, or my soul was repossessed for good and you would've been all alone.

Marcie: We almost didn't make it?

Al: But we did, so don't worry about it.

Marcie: Yeah, but why couldn't I have seen you sooner? I should've been able to see you.

Al: It was probably pretty hard to see me with Michael running around screwing things up, acting like a jerk all over the place.

Marcie: Thanks for not giving up on me.

Al: Thanks for not giving up on me.

Marcie: Look at you. I -- I don't know if I can believe this

Al: Believe it, baby.

Marcie: I do. I really do. I have you back and I'm never going to give you up.

Luna: Darling, it's -- it's time.

Al: You got to give me more time.

Luna: Honey, I can’t. We've stretched the rules way too much as it is, and I just can't do it.

Al: Luna, this is the last thing that I will ever ask of you, I swear. But you can't give Marcie happiness and then take it away from her without even telling her why.

Luna: Honey, listen, it's not like either of you are going to remember this whole thing anyway.

Al: Neither of us?

Luna: No!

Al: No. You know what? I don't believe that. We're going to remember. Somewhere down inside, we are going to remember. Otherwise, what's the point?

Luna: All right. But you make it quick.

Marcie: You talking to Luna again? Where is she? Why can't I see her?

Al: Yeah, she's -- she's right there. But, you know, I don't really have a lot of time.

Marcie: Yes, we do, Al. We have all the time in the world.

Al: Not exactly.

Marcie: Why? I thought you said that you were back.

Al: Well, yes, but -- well, you see, this is one of those good news/bad news sort of situations.

Marcie: No -- you're here, we're together. What could be bad?

Al: But in a few minutes, I'm going to be Michael McBain.

Marcie: Yes, I understand that, with you inside of his body.

Al: No, no, no, no, no. You see, I won't be me. Yes, it'll be my spirit and my soul and my love for you. That will never change. But Al's memories are going to be gone.

Marcie: No!

Al: I'll only have Michael’s.

Marcie: No, that -- you cannot forget!

Al: Look, I know that it's a lot to ask. It took me a while to get used to it. But here I am, asking you to do it in just a couple of minutes. But you'll like Michael.

Marcie: Ugh --

Al: You were already starting to like him before you even knew that I was inside of him.

Marcie: I don't know. I just -- this is still -- I really don't know what to think about this.

Al: Don't think. Feel. Do you feel that inside me?

Marcie: Yeah.

Al: That's al. Now, I might become Michael, but it will always be Al's spirit. It's not going to change.

Marcie: Maybe you're not going to remember, but I know that I will.

Al: That's the other part.

Marcie: Don't tell me there are more rules!

Al: You're not going to remember any of this.

Marcie: What?

Al: I'm sorry.

Marcie: No, no, no, no, forget about this. I am not going to agree to that. They cannot tell me what I can and can't remember! I'm -- well, I'm talking like there are angels right here!

Al: You don't have a choice, Marcie.

Marcie: Yeah, well, you go talk to Luna. You get her to change it.

Al: Yeah, like I haven't thought of that! There's only so much that one angel can do. Besides, Marcie, it's -- it's a lot better this way.

Marcie: Oh -- oh, how can you say that?

Al: Because if you keep hanging onto Al, this can never happen.

Marcie: I don't want to move on if I can't hold onto you.

Al: Well, great, then this was all for nothing -- a big waste of time. Marcie, I want you to be happy. You got a shot at that with Michael.

Marcie: No. I don't want or need anyone else to make me happy but you!

Al: He needs you, maybe even more than I did.

Marcie: Yeah, well, I don't care if Michael needs me.

Al: Marcie -- sweetie, if you won't do it for him and you won't do it for you, do it for me. My soul is going to be stuck inside of his body forever. I don't want to be stuck there without you.

Marcie nods her head and Al hugs her and then a change occurs.  Al’s soul merges with Michael’s.

Marcie: Michael?

Michael: Yeah. Wow. Valentine's Day -- definitely my favorite holiday.
