Because
I have no self-control -I saw Hairspray last night.
TheatreGoer
August 13, 2003
There may be some
spoilers re: Hairspray as I ramble on, so be forewarned.
I have tickets to see Hairspray on 9/3/03- I'm taking my Mom to see it as her
birthday present. I also have a ticket to see it by myself on 9/16/03. I had
already seen the show last year when it first opened in August. Is that enough
for me? NO!
All day long I debated with myself- do I want to see Kathy's first official
performance? Am I willing to wait on a cancellation line, knowing full well that
I don't have the greatest of all chances getting in? I decided that yes, I did
want to see her first ''real'' performance & yes, I would wait in the
humidity on the outside chance I might luck out.
I got to the theatre at 5:15, just as they were getting ready to draw the
lottery tickets (tix are 25.00 apiece, last row of the mezz, cash only, day of
performance- I was not interested as I was hoping to score a better seat). I got
on the cancellation line immediately. We were told countless times that there
was no guarantee we'd get in, yada yada yada. I was pretty far back on the line
as well- d@mn job for interfering with my day. At around 7:35, they finally
started releasing some returned seats & unused house seats. There were a lot
of people in front of me, so I fully did not expect to get in. At 7:55, it
seemed hopeless- they hadn't brought anyone to the window in awhile & there
were still alot of people in front of me. Finally, at 8:02 PM (Curtain is at
8:00), I was at the front of the line & I GOT IN!!!!!!!!
My seat was in the fifth row, center orchestra- near the aisle. They didn't seat
us stragglers until after the second number, so I watched Good Morning Baltimore
& the Corny Collins Show from the rear of the orchestra.
Kathy was incredible- even better than I expected her to be, if that was even
humanly possible. She sounded fantastic, she looked fantastic, she acted
fantastic & she danced beautifully- there was such a joyfulness in her
moves- you could tell exactly how happy she was to be on that stage. She has
terrific chemistry with her Broadway leading man- as if I expected any
different- Matthew Morrison. She was really able to get the most out of all the
comedy in the show- her timing is impeccable. I will say on the record,
completely unbiased, her performance was even better than Marissa's- Kathy's
voice is better suited to the material , IMO & she dances better as well.
During the finale, much of the cast enters from the audience as they storm the
Baltimore eventorium in hopes of finally integrating the Corny Collins Show on
National Television. Kathy entered from my side of the theatre and stood at the
end of my row for a few minutes- she's adorable!
Anyway- earlier, while I was waiting on the cancellation line, I turned around
to talk to the girls behind me & saw Kathy & Nathaniel at the stage
door- they must have just come from work (around 5:45- 6PM). It took all my self
control not to run over- I wanted to, but I was not getting off that line.
Unfortunately, Nathaniel is a Yankee fan based on the cap he was wearing, but
I'll try not to hold that against him. I almost didn't notice as he was wearing
a white T-shirt & khaki shorts. I don't think he came back for the
performance, but I'm sure he will soon. They chatted at the stage door for
awhile with someone else form HSpray & when he left , he leaned down, gave
her a kiss on the forehead & a big old bear hug. Lucky girl.
I waited around the stage door after the performance & got her to autograph
my Playbill- she was swarmed by fans when she came out- nice to see her getting
her props- she deserves them- I saw her mother (If Kathy wants to know what
she's gonna look like in her 50's, she needs to look no further than her mom)
and told her she has a wonderful daughter who is also wonderfully talented-
Momma Brier beamed. Also, at one point, Patricia Mauceri (Carlotta) walked by (
she hadn't seen the show that night- I think she had seen something else) and
told Kathy she was the best. PM is beautiful in person- absolutely stunning.
All in all, it was a pretty good night.

I
met Kathy Today!

September 21, 2003
I am so excited!! I
live in NY so I frequently go into NYC. I only live 20 minutes outside of NYC!
Anyway, today I had taken my cousin into NYC Times Square since is she from
Florida and never saw Times Square. While we were in Times Square I decided to
go to Hairspray theater to see if I could get tickets (I have them for February
22, 2004, but want to see Kathy so I want to go sooner).
While I was there the show had just ended so my cousin and I decided to wait for
Kathy outside the stage door. As I was standing waiting for Kathy I heard many
people saying how great the show was and how WONDERFUL Kathy was in the show. We
waited about 15 minutes until Kathy came out.

People bombarded Kathy when she came out. But, she was very gracious and said
"I will start at this end of the line and work my way down taking pics and
signing autographs." Well, when Kathy finally got to my area I heard
someone say to her "you are on OLTL as well, right?" Well, I couldn't
help myself I screamed, "yes she is and she is awesome." Kathy looked
at me, laughed and "said in such a sweet voice "you are sweet, thank
you."
Kathy then went to the next person and the person said "You know Al died on
Friday." Kathy said in such an adorable voice "I know." "My
best friend called me yesterday and said the same thing. I told her that I
already knew because I for one taped the scenes, plus I also tape the show
everyday and watch it." Everyone laughed and then Kathy started laughing.

When Kathy finally got to me I asked her to take a pic with me and she
graciously did. I then said "Kathy Al is going to live, right? Kathy looked
at me and said "Al died on Friday." I then said "But, Al is going
to end up living on Monday, right?" Kathy just looked at me and said again
"Al died on Friday." I said "Kathy I know Al died on Friday, but
he is going to live, right? Kathy started laughing (in that same laugh she does
on OLTL) and again said "Al died on Friday." I then decided to change
my question and said "Ok, well Al is going to stay on OLTL eventually,
right?" Kathy said "Well, I think Al comes on as Ghost Al." I
then said "Who the hell cares about Ghost Al, we want living and breathing
Al with Marcie, not Ghost Al." Kathy then said "well keep
watching." I then said "ok Kathy give me something, anything. AT least
tell me if tptb are going to keep NM on OLTL." Kathy then said "I
can't tell you that. I will get in trouble." Kathy then started laughing. I
said "Oh, come on Kathy I wont' tell anyone please. You haven't given me
anything, nothing." Kathy started laughing and again said "Sorry, I
can't tell you. But, don't worry and keep watching." I think figured that
Kathy wasn't going to throw me any bones so I changed the subject and asked her
how long her Hairspray contact was. Kathy said "well, I signed a contract
until November 30, 2003. But, I think that I am going to stay longer and sign a
longer contract because the schedule with OLTL and Hairspray is not that
hard." I think asked Kathy how she does Hairspray and OLTL because it seems
like such a difficult schedule. Kathy said "no it is not that bad. I have
been doing Hairspray for so long and I just go through the motions and don't
even realize what I am doing. But, Harvey Fienstein keeps me on my toes so I
can't slack off. " Kathy and I then started laughing. I then told Kathy how
she is great on OLTL and she thanked me as she started walking to other fans.
As Kathy walked down the line signing autographs and taking pics she was so
sweet and gracious! She was making jokes with the fans and making small talk. I
was trying to get pics of Kathy while she was signing autographs, but every time
I took a pic she would move and I miss the pic. I finally walked up to Kathy and
said "Hey, Kathy do me a favor and look in my camera so I can get a good
pic of you." Kathy started laughing in her Marcie voice and said
"Sure". She then gave ma huge smile!

Kathy was so adorable and sweet to everyone! It was great meeting her. She lives
up to her reputation. She is nice, sweet, adorable and gracious! If and when any
of you get to meet her you will not be disappointed!!
I do have a question though. Why oh why does the wardrobe department on OLTL
insist on putting Marcie in such huge clothes to accentuate and make her look
over weight when she really isn't? Kathy is adorable and the clothes that OLTL
makes her wear are horrible IMO! Kathy has an adorable shape and OLTL could be
putting her in adorable clothes!!

Guess what I did today?
MsT05
December 20, 2003
I just finished my
first semester away at college. I don’t work anymore so money is tight and
lord knows I have enough bills to pay. But I felt like I deserved a treat so I
thought since I had to go to New York anyway, I’d stop and see if there were
any tickets available for the 2pm Saturday show of Hairspray. I got in line and
chatted with a few ladies about Kathy and when it was my turn I asked if they
had any tickets for the show that afternoon. And guess what?? He asked for how
many and I said one. He said, “I have 5th Row Center. Perfect spot.” I
grinned and forked over the credit card and walked out with my prize.
I went to get a disposable camera and something to eat before getting in line. I
didn’t know if I would have any luck, but I was determined to at least get a
picture of Kathy today. I got in line and chatted with people about anything and
everything. I am not usually the most sociable person, but I was so excited to
actually get to see the show. At 1:30pm they finally started letting people in
and I was directed to my seat. My 5th Row Center seat (tee-hee-hee). The theater
was a lot more intimate than I expected. The stage was incredibly close. I mean
if the actor had a zit I could see it, that is how close it was.
I was seated next to a charming older couple in their 60s, who were delightful
and we talked about school and theater. They were giving me the rundown on
Broadway and prices, etc. Turns out they were relatively recently married about
a year ago. He joked that they were forced to get married shotgun. I cracked up
and told him he was bad.
Oh and I didn’t know that u weren’t supposed to take pics in the theatre so
I was snapping pics of the interior left and right. The ushers told me that I
couldn’t do that. Something about the trademark on their curtain. I didn’t
see what was so special about the curtain till towards the end of the show.
Finally they started the show. Now I know this is a Marcal board and we pretty
much reserve our gushing for them. I have to say that I may have went to see
Kathy, but that whole cast rocked the house. I mean it, they all blew me away.
Kathy works with some of the tastiest man-meat I have ever seen! Mathew Morrison
plays Linc and he is just H-O-T! The 12 yr old girl who plays Lil Inez (Aja
Maria) can blow her tail off. The women who played Amber (Tracy Edwards) and her
mom, Velma (Barbara Walsh) were wickedly delicious.
I can go on and on about the cast, actually I will. The guy who played Seaweed (Terron
Brooks) offered up some great funny moments and some fab tunes. Penny (Jennifer
Gambatese) starts off innocent and turns into a sex kitten and belts out some
notes that knocked my socks off. Jackie Hoffman, who plays Penny’s mom, the
gym coach, and the warden stole many a scene. She had the audience in stitches.
And I cannot forget to mention Harvey Fierstein (Edna Turnblad) and Dick Latessa
(Wilbur Turnblad) they were hilarious. They have a duet “Timeless to Me”
that had the audience cracking up. Just amazing cast - AMAZING!
Of course, our girl Kathy rocked the house. As usual she sounded perfect and I
had to shake my head at the big deal that was made of her size. The girl is
small! What is she 5ft?! And curvy not what I would call big at all, just curvy.
And I could swear they padded her stomach, but I dunno for sure. My favorite
song is “I Can Hear the Bells” which she sings after meeting Linc. And my
favorite scene is one where Linc is singing “It Takes Two” and Tracy gets so
overheated that she starts singing with him and then begins to hike up her dress
inflamed with passion! The whole show had a great energy and they seemed to
really be enjoying themselves. The audience response was great. And I am not
going to lie, I hooted and hollered as they took their final bows and at the end
of every scene. As they came up I cheered and told everyone they were great or
wonderful. And the curtain is special, as it draws up it goes into a flip
hairstyle with a hairclip.
So as I am exiting my row I look over to the right and see Stuart Scott (if u r
a sports fan u will know him from ESPN’s Sportscenter). His wife saw me
looking and said hello. He was tending to his children when he looked up I said,
“Hi. I love u on Sportscenter. U r hilarious.” He said, “Thank you.
What’s your name?” “Tera.” “Thank you Tera. Nice to meet you.”
I went to the lobby and looked at tshirts and CD’s. I bought a tshirt, but not
a CD since it wasn’t Kathy. And I asked the sales lady if she could tell me
where the exit was so I could get an autograph. She directed me out of the
building and to the left. I was off! There weren’t many people in line and I
got right up front and began chatting with some ladies. We talked about where we
knew Kathy from and how it was my 1st theatre experience. Some of the supporting
casts come out and I just snap pics left and right. Giggling to the ladies next
to me I say, “I can’t believe my 1st time out I am getting so lucky!” They
agreed and then Seaweed pops out. I didn’t even notice that he was getting
ready to talk on the phone, but I lean over, smile, and tell him I thought he
was great tonight. He said, “Thank you” and walked off. I was chatting to
the ladies and a gentleman who seemed to know a lot about how everything worked
when Seaweed came back and grabbed my playbill and signed it! I didn’t even
ask! I thanked him and he said, “Thank you.” Then he went down the line.
Next, I snapped a pic of Linc on the inside. I told my line buddies I thought I
read somewhere that he didn’t do autographs. But when he finally came out, he
did and was very pleasant. He joked with Harvey Firestein because a lady said,
“I love you, Harvey, ” he responded, “She just said the same thing to
me!’ Harvey said, “U can love more than 1 person. I love u Matthew.”
Matthew just looked really dry, like he was saying, “Whatever.” Then he went
down the line signing autographs, I thanked him. And the guys standing down from
my right told him he was the best actor on Broadway. I thought he was great too,
but I thought that was pushing it. Matthew chuckled and said, “I doubt that”
then he looked at him earnestly and said, “But thank you.” One thing I liked
about everyone in the cast who signed autographs, everyone of them looked at you
when they spoke and signed. Except Harvey, who we were also told not to
photograph. Whatever.
Brian Dennehy came out with a bunch of kids and said the show was fantastic. I
got Amber’s autograph and told her, “U were sooo wicked!” She looked up at
me and said, “Thank you! That is the best compliment.” Then she looked back
and was like, “Who was that?” “Brian Dennehy.” She said, “I want to
meet him!” We laughed and she continued down the line.
Then I met Penny, who I could barely recognize. They all wear wigs so it takes a
minute. I told her something like, “U can blow!” She looked up and said,
“I remember u! In the audience. I looked out and saw u and I said Now that is
a girl to really perform at a matinee for.” I just grinned. I am assuming she
meant that sometimes matinees fans aren’t very excitable. I couldn’t believe
she noticed me!
When Kathy came out I thought she was walking away but she was just starting at
the top and working her way down. As she worked her way down everyone took all
the good things I was going to say to her. When the woman next to me told her
she knew she recognized that voice from OLTL, KB replied, “That is where most
people know me from.” I just blurted out, “I love Marcie and Al!” She
smiled as she signed, “Nathaniel is great to work with.” I said,
“Nathaniel is gorgeous!” KB said he was fun to work with. Then I got the
shock of my life. I had been taking pics of every1 (Except Harvey, per request)
and never asked any1 to take pics with me bcuz I thought it was asking too much.
KB looks at me and said, “Did u want to take a picture together?” I froze
and was like, “Ohmigod! She’d take a pic w/me?” Yes, yes! I asked the
woman next to me to take it and showed her what to do. Kathy and I leaned in and
smiled. Flash! I just about died. Thank you, thank you.
Lastly I met Motormouth Maybelle and she was so chatty. The guy that was up from
me seemed to know all their business. He asked her how she was doing, asked
another actress about her foot that was hurt the last time he saw her, etc. So I
guess he makes this a hobby. Anyway, she said she was having fun with this
production and that she had broke 2 teeth. When she got to me I told her that I
came to see Kathy, but that the whole cast was fantastic. That she had blown me
away. She said Kathy was fun and thanked me.
Finally sated, I said goodbye to my line buddies and headed towards my friends
hotel. Flying high the whole time. I have pics, but no scanner. So I can’t
post them for you guys. Sorry.
Sorry to write so much, but I figured if any1 could appreciate what this day
meant to me it would be u ladies. I had probably the best afternoon in a year
and anyone who can get out to see it should. You will not be disappointed.
Thanks for letting me share.
