After four years without new material, Ramstein came back with his LP, Mutter. After the Sehnsucht machine-like
era, it is a comeback to the Herzeleid times, wtih a freer song structure. Of course that Herzeleid's variety isn't surpassed,
but Mutter came very close. They integrated new elements, like the use of real string arrangements or the samplings from
"A Symphony Of Voices", adding a more melodic streak to the songs, besides the good use of keyboards. Songs like "Links 2-3-4"
or "Rein Raus" still hold some of the hypnotic riffs, reminding us of the unstoppable beat machine that became worldwide known
with Sehnsucht. Others, like "Mein Herz Brennt" or "Spieluhr" are real improvements in the songwriting, using a mature structure.
"Sonne" or "Mutter" use simple but impressive riffs, composing songs that aren't complex but beatiful nonetheless. Also, they
take a punk detour in songs like "Adios" or "Zwitter", like a little tribute to their influences. And, of course that the
melodic ballad couldn't be missing. "Nebel", by far, surpasses any other Rammstein slow song ("Seeman" or "Klavier") Till
Lindemann, reaching beatiful tones, and Bobo, previously known for her choruses in "Engel", sing in this ethereal melodic
piece. Good closing.
Rammstein can't outgrow their simple compositions, but they give them interesting variations. After the
huge commercial success that was Sehnsucht, Mutter is a less accessible release, certainly not aimed for the metal heads.
Dark lyrics infest the topics in the songs; as always, written with a good poetic sense. They lack the seriousness of other
bands, without losing the self-respect, which is what makes them respectable. If you are looking for technical perfection,
you won't like Rammstein, but they still provide an enjoyable short album. Their live shows are very pleasurable too.
