Some time ago, I had posted an earlier review of this same CD. I retired it because of reasons of insanity (stupidity), for I was being biased because of my own ignorance and I gave a lot of credit to these guys. It's a sin that I felt was necessary to confess. I was blinded during a long period of time by the Nu-metal and its empty promises of meaningful metal. Although my despise for the subgenre is still present, I can't stop giving some credibility to Mudvayne. The problem with Nu-metal is that it is cheap and vulgar, for brainless children that want to believe that they are failures in a corrupt society. It's a puerile warcry. It's a non-constructive tendency, therefore, mediocre. Mudvayne, sadly still qualifies in some of the mentioned categories. Musically speaking, the band doesn't break any ground, with the exception maybe of the jumping bass lines. The voice is a good mix between ragged screams and a beautiful, if nasal, tone. The guitar is mostly dull and the drumming is good without being excellent. The band lacks seriousness and I felt sometimes the urge to hear something believable in these tracks. Of course, something in this field is accomplished in some songs ("Death Blooms", "Severed", "(K)now F(orever) or in some parts of "Prod") but the tendency to rap, added to the unbelievable quantity of cursing, lessens any achievement. If those tracks were good, we can't ignore the vulgar side of the album. "Dig", "Under My Skin" or "Everything And Nothing" are almost unbearable, even if "Dig" still appeals to that something in every metalhead. The lirycs, without being the best I've read, make sense, but not always. The cursing replaces phrases more times than we'd like to read. The uselessness of most the programmed tracks ("Recombinant Resurgence", "Golden Ratio", etc.) is too palpable.

All in all, the Nu-metal, a disgusting part of the metal, reaches something with Mudvayne, but still, there are better things.
