Background/History:
The Fawcett Convalescence Home was a very dark and hopeless place where those
with physical handicaps and no other place to go ended up. For orphaned children
like Paige and Karston, it was horrible. Polio had taken away their ability to
walk and the only way to leave the third floor was to be carried down the steps
and that did not happen often. The Children’s Ward became their entire world.
Wade Wainwright was a construction worker with an eye toward becoming an
architect when a work accident cracked his spine leaving him virtually
paralyzed. With no living relatives, he ended up at Fawcett, as well. Wade had
had a fascination with the occult as long as he could remember and reading was
about all he could do in his condition, so he had books brought to him and one
of the children would sit with him and turn the pages for him. He had the
messenger who delivered his books pick up a pet rabbit for the kids in gratitude
and they named him "Harvey". During his reading, he came across a
mention of a ‘thunder demon’ and the passage haunted him. Perhaps the
hopelessness of the situation was getting to him, but he thought if he could
summon that demon perhaps it could heal him and the kids. Prayer up above seemed
useless, maybe it was time to try something else. Unable to get out of bed
himself, he had the kids gather materials and draw a pentagram. He spoke the
incantations while the kids with Harvey looked on. The demon appeared, trapped
within the pentagram. It demanded to be released and Wade offered a bargain. The
demon would grant them it’s power and heal them, then they would break the
pentagram and free the demon. The helpless demon had no choice and a thunderclap
filled the air. Suddenly, the three cripples were whole and filled with
superhuman strength and powers, ever the bunny had transformed into an
anthropomorphic, six foot tall super-rabbit. The demon demanded to be freed, but
Wade thought for a moment and realized that the demon might be able to take back
the power if they freed it. Prior to his transformation, the thought would have
never occurred to him, but the taint of evil in the demon’s power was strong.
Instead of releasing it, Wade told them to attack the helpless demon and kill it
where it was trapped. They did and worse yet, they enjoyed it. The taint in the
power had affected their minds and they became super villains, taking and doing
whatever they pleased. This brought them into conflict with Bullet Boy and the
rest of the ’40s era super heroes. They ended up fighting as mercenaries on
the side of the Axis and Kid Thunder and Thunder Girl died during the last
battle of WW 2. Following the War, Mr. Thunder and Thunder Hare continued their
criminal activities into the 1950s. During a battle with Requiem, the demon who
had not actually been killed, just his corporeal form had been destroyed, used
the protoplasm of the hero’s blast to form a temporary body. It took back it’s
powers from the two, leaving a cripple with a newly revived conscience who had
full memory of his evil deeds and a normal rabbit. Wade lived out his life in an
institution hating himself for not being strong enough to master his powers and
resist temptation with Harvey the rabbit, his only friend, the only one who
could understand.
Personality/Motivations:
Prior to the acquisition of their powers, the children had handled their
unfortunate circumstances pretty well, but they had some natural resentment.
Wade was a pretty average nice guy before the accident, but bitterness began to
creep in. The demon’s power inflamed their negative emotions and fueled their
evil acts
