Waited one hour. The temperature was some --20 deg F and the winds: too high. We nearly froze to death. The windows became frosty from our breath and the passing cars probably thought there was no one inside and the car had been abandoned. But it hadn't! We were inside! I am pretty sure Marc drove by us but I can't blame him for not stopping. Maybe he didn't even recognize the car although there are not that many Prefects around just like ours. Decided to leave car there and take bus. Wrapped ourselves with everything we could lay our hands on, so cold it was. Took the tool kit with me on the bus as it's worth more than the car! Went to sleep at 6567 Molson. 02.02 Had the car repaired. It was broken points. Returned to Richelieu. 02.06 Went to Pascal to buy some tools and tool cabinet. Also bought some tubes for the TV at Canadian Universal. 02.08 Went to see Paul-Emile Tessier at St Paul L'Ermite with Pa, Ma and Paul. Nobody there. Had supper at home. Found in top shape condition. Tonight, caught a bad cold. Went to bed at 18:00 hrs. 02.11 Had a big storm last night. Couldn't make it to the Station. Phoned up and didn't go to work all 1 day. My cold is worst than ever. Sent lesson to CREI. 02.12 St-Valentin. Got card for Coco. 02.16 Stafford, from Station Telecom, is willing to go to Cold Lake in my place. Got Mr Calver to work on it. He said it might be possible to cancel posting but he sees no reason why I should want to cancel it as I have been at St-Hubert for a while and the next transfer might be worse. Worse than Cold Lake I said? In any case, we will find out very soon. 02.18 Bought tape recorder Grundig from Cpl Coté from'Servicing'. Exchanged with TV. The tape counter is broken. 02.21 Possible visit from Prudence. Ordered drive belt for tape recorder. Prudence didn't come. 02.24 Went tonight at the Coté's place. Tonight, went to visit Mr Gendreau. 02.29 Missed terror film in St John. 03.04 Oil furnace exploded today. No material damage. Was really dirty, including the pipes. Was told that draft should not be over 5% positive. It was 3% negative! No wonder! 03.05 Bought rocking chair ($20.00) in Vi1le Jacques Cartier. Probably could not buy it in Cold Lake. 03.06 Went to see the Chrysler Show at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Not too good. Saw a show with Jane Morgan; it was quite good. 03.08 Aligned Tuner today. It started. 03.09 Car wouldn't start today. Had a push. 03. 10 J'ai cassé le pot a sucre en verre taillé. Coco a pleuré. Bad, bad moi! 03.12 Coco a fait une tarte au citron. Laissé au feu trop longtemps. Moé pas citron, a Jeté la tarte a terre! Received the telephone today. Going to Cold Lake! 8ig snowstorm today. Coco a cassé la casserole. 03. 13 Big party at Vince's for Sgt Finlay 03.06 Left for New York City with Prefect today at 10 PM. Not sure that we will make it but, it might be our last chance to see New York for a while. Let's just hope we can make it and back (a tall order!) 03.27 We got to New York at 3 PM. How, I don't quite know but, we made it. Had some troub1e in the mountains. Car simply didn't want to climb them big hil's.... Had to get some backwards in fact. Stayed at the New Yorker Hotel, just as if we could really afford it but, then again, you only live twice. 03.28 I am 22 years old today! Growing old! Left New York at 10 PM again. Seems to be a lucky time for us to depart on a voyage. We had a good time while in New York although some punks had removed some wires from the engine and the car , understandably, wouldn't start too well. in fact, it wouldn't start at all. We finally got a push from a guy with a big De Soto. His grille was bigger than our car, and he pushed us at higher speeds through 34th St in Manhattan than the car had ever gone under its own power before. It was frightening. I kept waving at him to stop and he took my signal to mean 'go faster' I guess. I finally convinced him to stop pushing us when we arrived near the United Nations , clear across the islandl As it turned out, it was only the distributor coil which had been partly taken out. If I had seen it when I first looked at it, we would not have had that scary ride. But then, we would not have the story to tell our grandchildren. 03.29 Drove al1 night and arrived in Richelieu at 11:30 AM. And what a ride it was. Dead tired. There is one valve burnt on the car and the other three are not too healthy either. No wonder it wouldn't break 40 Mph! 03.30 Off work. Went to Montreal. 04.01 Lost two cylinders from the Motor. Couldn't find them. Looks like the old Prefect just won't make it to Cold Lake! 04.03 LAC Gauthier got his hooks and Sgt Stewart got his crown. Went to St-Marc today. 04.04 Played bowling with Jo. Got avergae of 120... ouf! Saw Dodo David during our visit there. 04.05 Tried Dollar's car, a Plymouth '54. Real good car. Almost sold mine. 04.06 Got back to Montreal. 04.10 Got a party from the Squadron at Vince's. Nice guys. The water hose broke on Jacques Cartier bridge (of all places) and it cost $8.75 to get it fixed. 04.11 Off today. We are waiting fpr Gigi's folks. 04.12 Nobody showed up. 04.14 Sold the Prefect to F/S Stoker for $30.00! He made a compression test and it gave: 05, 20, 15 and 10! No wonder I had to climb hills backwards! 014.16 I thought I had a vision today. I saw this black Prefect zoom by the Station Guard House at 50 mph! It was no vision. F/ Stoker had fixed the Prefect. 04.17 Mrs Dusablon, Jo, Jeannette and Armande arrived home to spend the week-end. Stayed home tonight. 04.18 Visited all day and I drove Jo's car all the time. 04.19 The visit left at 4PM after visiting all day. I drove Jo's car over 200 miles during the week-end. Said goodbye to all. 04.21 Getting ready to leave for Cold Lake. 04.24 Posting to Cold Lake effective today. Left on the Transcontinental for Cold Lake, at 4 PM today. 04.25 On the way to Cold Lake. Last night, the heating system went ape in the sleeper wagon and we nearly froze to death. Tonight, we changed car. It's a bit better but not much. 04.26 Arrived at Grand Centre at 10 PM. All in all, I had a good trip . 04.27 Got signed in on the Station. Wrote the Caisse Populaire in Richelieu to close account. Sent travel claim to Levasseur for signature. ($1.00) Wrote Gigi. 04.28 Found a house in Grand Centre:3 rooms, heated, running water, shower, 220 Volt entry at $80.00/month. Not all houses here have running water and, not all houses have indoor toilets! It's unbeleivable! I was assigned to work at WPU (Weapon's Practice Unit). 04.30 Wrote letter to Coco. 05. 01 Started to fix tape recorder. 05.02 Big snowstorm last night. Temperature this morning was 20 below! Went this afternoon at Jack' s place. Had a snack. 05.03 Still 3" of snow. Fixed tape recorder. Had supper at Keeping's place. Nice people. Recorded six LP's while I was there. 05.04 Got advance on claim for $50.00. Signed up for the place to live at Hart's Apartment. Don't go by the name of the place. Back in Quebec, it would be labeled as a shack but here, in the boondocks, it is one of the nices places in Grand Centre. At least it has indoor plumbing! 05.05 Mailed a registered letter to Coco telling her how to get to Cold Lake. Started repacking stuff for the move to Grand Centre. 05.06 Mailed $25.00 to Coco. Told her to send telegram frow Sioux Look-out. 05.07 Got 1etter from Coco. Had interview with the SWO this afternoon. It went OK. But, ... judging from his attitude, you would have thought I was Billy the Kid or one of the James brothers coming in to town. He laid the law (in Cold Lake, as he saw it) rather forcefully. The idiot! 05.08 Started the construction of a Heathkit Apache Kit for 'Quebec'. 85.09 Phoned Montreal to talk to Gigi. Found out she was in Quebec. ] I told papa to tell Gigi to take the Super Continental Monday afternoon. I worked on the kit for 4 hours. 05.10 I have until the 13th May off. Worked on kit 4 hours. 05.11 Phoned Montrea. Found out that Gigi had taken the 4 PM train Montreal. Worked on kit 3 hours. 05.13 Gigi arrived in Edmonton shortly before 1 PM. I flew in to meet her. We visited the town's City Hall. Very nice. Weather's is 70 degrees! We registered at Grand Centre Hotel 'not as great as the nawe would let one imagine'. Wanting to impress Gigi, I told the taxi driver to take us to 'the nicest Hotel in town'. He was still laughing his head off when he dumped us at the Hotel! And no wonder. Heard of Tremlay's (Quebec) posting overseas. Hotel $5.00 + $4.00 = $9.00! 05.14 Still at Hotel. Went to the Station tonight. Gigi met Paul Thbodeau. 05.15 Didn't work today. No work to do. Seems to happen quite often here. A little bit like St-Hubert on slack days. 05. 16 Went to Bonneyville with Paul Thibodeau. Temperature: 99 degrees! Some hot. And it's called Cold Lake you say? 05.17 Went to Cold Lake. There were two men there diving. The water temperature was 20 deg! Cold. 85.18 Went to a show on Station. Had moose meat and a german dish. 05.23 Went at Grand Centre Theatre to see Younf at Heart with Frank Sinatra and Doris Day: not bad. You should see the washrooms at that theatre, When they say 'public' they mean 'public'. Expected furniture today but it didn't arrive - I suppose we'll get used to that waiting in the years to come. 85.24 Father Desjardins came home to hear a recording of 'Comment Pete'. 05.25 Started night shift today. I replaced Beanland. Furniture arrived this afternoon at 2PM. Went to work at 16.30hrs and returned at 1730 hrs- The place looks like a mess with all that furniture unpacked and all.? 05.27 Up at 09:30hrs. Started to clean up mess. Bought food. Eggs are 0.30/doz and butter is 0.72/lb. Margarine is 0.33/lb and bread is 0.20 a loaf! Some expensive out here. But we'll manage, I am sure of it. Worked till 10PM. Three aircraft flew. 05. 28 Filed claim for Gigi. 05.29 Went to work at 0030 hrs amd was back home at 01:30 hrs,. Big day (or night,.. whatever) Received letter from Mrs Dusablon. 05.30 Went shoppings: $18.00 Boy what a difference with Quebec. But then, there are several expenses (mostly temptations) in Quebec that we don't have here so it evens out. For example, in Quebec, we were often visiting the folks and taking car rides and here we don't (which makes sense 'cause I don't have a car.) So..., less expense in that area. Went swimming for the first time. Water was good but cold. Had first swimming lesson. How to float. Kind of like it. Had lunch at Pat' s place (steak sandwich). Played cards till 11PM. 05.31 Mass at 0930 hrs. Went fishing with the cure, Pau1, Therese and Rolande, Pat Bob and Pete. Then went to eat and play baseball. Took photos. Went to see Paul and gave him an invitation to come for supper Sunday night the 14th. 06.04 We talked about going to Jasper-Banff at the end of July. We don't know how long we'll be in the west and it would be a shame to get posted back east and not having visited the Rockies. So, we'll try it this summer, if at all possible. 06.05 Telecom Party tonight. Gotta go, I'm told. 06.07 Received Paul, Rolande, Peter and Therese for supper tonight (instead of next week).
