the facts
Hotohori...the Prince Swordsman. Hotohori's Suzaku symbol is 'sei' or star and
is located on the left side of his neck. His name is known as 'star lodging'.
Hotohori was also the fourth Emperor of Konan: Saihitei Seishuku. He was born on
April 2nd in Eiyo, capital of Konan and ascended the throne at the tender age of
14. He has five half-siblings but only one, an older half brother, Ougi,
appeared in the Fushigi Yuugi universe. In fact, Ougi and a pre-anime Hotohori
(already emperor) are characters in the Tasuki novel, GenrouDen. Hotohori
married Houki and a son, Boushin, was born after his death.
Growing up, the royal heir had learned of the legend of Suzaku no Miko, who
would appear when the country was on the brink of destruction. Saihitei was the
second of the Suzaku Shichiseishi to be found; he revealed himself as the seishi
Hotohori to Miaka, whom he suspected to be the 'girl from another world' when
she and her companion, Tamahome, ran into trouble with the palace guards. They
eventually gathered the rest of the Suzaku no seishi: Nuriko, Chichiri,
Mitsukake, Tasuki and Chiriko.
Hotohori's seishi ability was his swordsmanship. Trained since he was very
young to use the sword, his ability and prowess was enhanced by his chi.
Hotohori also used it defensively, by creating protective barriers or levitating
(telekinesis). After the failed Suzaku Summoning Ceremony, Hotohori received a
shinken (deity sword) from Taiitsu-kun. He was capable of materializing his
sword out of thin air.
Personality-wise, Hotohori (the man or emperor) was gentle and passionate and
full of integrity. He truly cared for his people and put their welfare
before his own desires. Hotohori was fiercely loyal to those he called family
or friends, whether protecting his miko or giving her up to the rival seishi who
won her heart. He does have his quirky side though: narcissism. The emperor
was beautiful and he knew it.
After the failed ceremony, the seishi (sans Hotohori) travelled to Hokkan to
retrieve the Genbu Shinzaho. They had been informed by Taiitsu-kun that this was the only other way to summon their god. However, the Suzaku side failed in their mission and Hotohori prepared Konan for war. The emperor led his army against Kutou and eventually, faced the enemy shogun, but his attempt to stop Nakago was futile.
The good guys eventually won, but the price was high. Their families and friends
mourned the deaths of Nuriko, Chiriko, Mitsukake and Hotohori and an entire
nation grieved for its emperor, who died on the battlefield.
