Ordinary Heroes

They came together that morning

with no thought of saying goodbye.

A beautiful blue sky greeted them overhead.

They had no inkling of what destiny would

ask of them, of what fate would dictate their

future to be.

Ordinary people.

Fathers. Mothers. Husbands. Wives.
Sons. Daughters. Friends and Lovers.

Who did not ask to be called “hero”.

In a moment life changed for them

For their loved ones.

For us all.

In a moment they became heroes.

Some gave the ultimate

sacrifice for their fellow man.

Others survived to carry

on the stories of courage

and honor that repeated

themselves over and over.

Ordinary people.
Extraordinary heroes.

They comforted each other.

Held one another’s hand.
Whispered words of encouragement

to their neighbors.

Led the way through

the dark without pause

for their own safety.

Dried the tears of those bowed with fear.

Some gave their all for

the stranger who was in need.

Let us live our lives remembering

their love for their fellow man,

their selfless dedication.

Let us extend a hand of comfort

wherever suffering exists.

The hand of aid wherever there is a need.

Let us seek to find peace within

ourselves and the world.

And in the face of fear and danger,

let us rise to the occasion

the way they rose to the task.

We shall move forward

But let’s always remember

the ordinary people

that showed us what

heroes

really are.
