You're Always Welcome At Our House
written by Shel Silverstein
sung on The Muppet Show by Marisa Berenson
and assorted Muppets
[Marisa Berenson, dressed as a little girl, dances into the room of a house.]
Marisa: Well, a man came to our house, our house, our house.
A man came to our house to sell us some brooms.
So we asked him to come in, and we hit him with a hammer.
And we hid him in the closet in my father’s room.
[Marisa opens the closet to show the man inside, tied to a broom, who joins in the chorus.]
Both: But you’re always welcome in our house, any time of the day.
Yes, you’re always welcome in our house.
And we hope you will stay.
[The closet shuts, and Marisa goes over to the sofa to pull up her stocking.]
Marisa: Then a lady came to our house, our house, our house.
A lady came to find out why I was not in school.
So we asked her to come in, and we gave her some poison lemonade
And hid her in the freezer, where it’s nice and cool.
[Marisa opens the freezer to show the tied-up lady inside. She and the man join in as the closet opens.]
All Three: But you’re always welcome in our house, any time of the day.
Yes, you’re always welcome in our house.
And we hope you will stay.
[The closet and freezer shut, and Marisa begins to prance about the room again.]
Marisa: Then a kid came into our yard, our yard, our yard.
A kid came into our yard to get his ball.
So we asked him to come in, and we took in the basement.
And we sealed him up inside the basement wall.
[She opens a trapdoor, and the tied-up kid sticks his head out. He and the man and lady join in
as the closet and freezer open.]
All Four: But you’re always welcome in our house, any time of the day.
Yes, you’re always welcome in our house.
And we hope you will stay.
[The closet and freezer shut. Marisa kicks the trapdoor closed and resumes her little dance.]
Marisa: So when you come to our house, our house, our house,
When you come to our house, we will have some fun.
We will ask you to come in, and we will take you in the kitchen.
We will put you in the oven until you are done.
[She opens the oven to show a tied-up man inside. He and the other man, the lady, and the kid join in as the closet, freezer, and trapdoor open.]
All Five: But you’re always welcome in our house, any time of the day.
Yes, you’re always welcome in our house.
And we hope you will stay.
Marisa: And we know ... you will stay.
[With a smile, Marisa shuts all the others back up, then does a little curtsy, keeping one foot on the trapdoor.]
