Freehand sketching is a very important skill. It is very useful when we need to explain our ideas and to get our thoughts down on a paper quickly. For many design ideas, sketches can explain much more easily for others and also for us to have the more clear idea.
Do not use a ruler or drawing aids such as set square when sketching. Using those aids will slower down your work and break up the flow of ideas. Besides, ruler drawn sketches always seems dull and lifeless, in the other hand, good freehand sketches are lively and good to look at.
Start
Horizontal and Vertical lines
When drawing straight line, first mark two dots at the start and the finish. Join the dots by moving your pencil at a steady speed. Keep your eyes looking at the far dot.
Try to draw with your whole arm and not just by moving your wrist. Try not to rest your hand on the paper. You can use your little finger as a guide or support and not to rest your hand on the paper.
Try that yourself:
Rectangles
After you feel comfortable about pencil control and joining dots, you can try to draw lines at right angles to each other. Then you will find it not difficult to draw squares and rectangles.
Circles
When you can draw a square, draw a square sith sides the same length
as the diameter of the circle. Mark the center points of each side of the
square which the circle will touch. Work on each quarter circle. Ellipses
can be drawn in the same way; just it is use rectangles rather than squares.
