Railways were built in France, Germany, Italy and the other countries of Europe. Soon they were crossing Africa and Asia as well. One of the most famous railways was the Trans-Siberian, opened in 1905 and later extended. It crossed the vast snowy plains of Russia, linking Moscow with Vladivostok. Labourers were hired from all over the world to build the line, and convicts and troops were also used.
