(5)The Great Engineers

Railways spread far and wide across the British Isles. Famous engineers included George Stephenson's son Robert (1803-59), who became manager of his father's locomotive works. He built the famous Britannia Tubular Railway Bridge in North Wales. One of the greatest engineers was Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59) who built the splendid Great Western Railway between London and Bristol. Until 1892 this railway used a very wide gauge, or broad track. Brunel's tunnels and bridges are still in use today.
