Large diesel trains are very heavy and need a great amount of power in order
to get going. The powerful diesel engine is not used to drive the wheels
directly, but to drive a generator which makes electricity. This is
transferred to storage batteries beneath the locomotive. Electricity from
these batteries is used to run electric motors which drive the wheels.
