The History Of TRAINS
(20)Signals & Safety
Railways must operate safely even in foggy or snowy conditions. Today, computer systems and electronics have made rail travel much safer. Signals are clearly visible lights which operate automatically. At level crossings barriers are also automatic, sealing off road traffic from passing trains. The points, which switch a train on to an adjoining track, are automatically controlled and heated so that they do not become iced over in winter.
