Clustering or Mapping or Webbing
This prewriting technique is especially useful for those who like charts and graphs.
1. Relax and get comfortable with your pen and paper
2. Draw a circle in the middle of the page
3. Draw some lines out from the circle
4. Draw a line or two from those lines
Now you’re ready
1. Write your topic in that middle circle
2. On each line extending from it, write something that pertains to the topic. Put a circle around it.
3. On each line extending from the lines, write something that pertains to the subject, and draw a circle around it.
You can continue to go on and on clustering or mapping or webbing – any name for the process is fine – until you
run out. What you’re doing is creating a ring of ideas around your topic or question about your topic. When you’re
done, you have a visual representation of your ideas, and you can pick and choose what will go together in your essay.
