Tagmemics

Related to the Reporting Technique, Tagmemics is another approach that eliminates writer’s block. In this prewriting technique you make three columns labeled:

Characteristics . . . . Over Time . . . . Network

Under “Characteristics” list the topic’s definition, its description, its actions, etc. Under “Over Time” list everything you can think of about its history and where it may go in the future. Under “Network” list everyone and everything that’s connected to it.

For example, if Gangs were your topic, what are words that describe the characteristics of a gang? How are they defined – by the police, by the gangstas? Where are they located? Who are members?

Under the "Over Time" heading, what can you list that has been the history of gangs? Where did they begin. How have they formed? Where have they moved over time? What might their future be?

Under “Networks,” list everyone and everything you conceive is connected to gangs, such as police or drug-dealing or initiations or drive-bys.

When you've finished listing, you're sure to have a good grasp of your topic.
