He talks about his life and projects

This interview appeared on TV, in Al Ritmo de las Estrellas (Canal 5). They didn´t say when or where it was made, but I think it was made when Tarkan visited Mexico in March. Tarkan is sitting in what seems to be an hotel lobby, wearing a blue long-sleeved t-shirt. He looks as good and nice as he's always been. Let's see what he said:

-It´s very surprising for me, I mean, I keep saying that, because, it´s in turkish, the album, the song, people are loving it. I´ve been here for just a few days and I´m really flattered by their attention and by latin american attention to me. It just makes me feel that I should work harder, record better songs and gain their attention more and more.

-What differences and similarities you find between Turkey and latinamerican countries?
-You know, there are a lot of similarities between your people and my people. They are very friendly, very nice, very honest, the way they show their love. That makes them actually close to my country. But in other ways my country is different, the way you eat, the kind of music you listen to.

-Do you like latin music? Which latin artists do you know?
-I do, I do, there are certain artists I listen to, for example, I like Enrique (Iglesias), I like Ricky's music too. I like Santana, he's kind of my idol, and I know he´s from Mexico. The song named "Smooth", that song just drives me crazy. I like that.

-Tell us about the beginning of your career and how you gained international recognition.
-My career started back in Turkey in 1992, so I've been in showbiz for about 8 years. But the past 2 years have been very special to me, because I had the opportunity to sing to the world. And I don't know, if I would have the answers to these questions, I guess that would be bad. I think the magic is that we don't know what's going on. It's just the kiss song, it has catched everybody's hearts, I think the kisses are really important because the kisses are universal, even when nobody understand the words, kisses...are just kisses!

-Who had the idea of including the kisses in "Simarik"?
-It was the songwriter's idea...a nice, great singer in Turkey, a lady who loves the song, she wrote it (he refers to Sezen Aksu).

-Tell us about your next album.
-It's going to be like a new page in my whole career life. It's going to be totally new, a fresh sound, combining occidental influences with oriental sounds. I think that with better recordings, nice videos and good musicians, it's going to be a great production. But if you ask about its style, it's going to be sexy, erotic, and groovy and oriental, that's for sure.

-What do you like and dislike of being famous?
-First of all, I think I was born to be known and get the attention. So I don't want to talk about the things I like because I love this world. This is my world. But there are certain things which bother me, of course, like sometimes the pressure of the press and sometimes even the pressure of society. When I say something, when I do something, when people don't really like that and when they react to me, specially the press. I don't like prejudiced people, who are trying to hurt me. That's the difficult part of it. And also, after a while you got no freedom anymore as anybody else does, walking in the streets, shopping, doing simple things. But I've also learned to have my own freedom behind my walls. Freedom is inside, I guess.

-Why you decided to move to New York?
-The reason was because of my freedom, actually I wanted to live a more simple life, far away from my country, from fame and all the pressures I was talking about. So just have a simpler life, do simple things and focus on my music more, because if you're surrounded by fame and glamour, after a while you don't feel happy anymore, you can't create anymore, because there are so many things trying to get your attention away. So that's why I wanted to be alone, for a while, to discover music.

-What would you like to say to your latin fans?
-I want to thank them, for loving my music. And I want to say to them: "Stick on me" (he laughs) because this is going to be great, I'm going to write some very good songs for them. I hope they're not upset because it's in turkish; I'm going to write great turkish songs for them for the new album. I send you my love and gratitude. Love me, keep loving me, and keep sending me kisses too, just like I do to you (he sends a cute kiss).
