Russia loves Tarkan
Kara, from Ukraine, sent me this article, which was published in a russian magazine called Cool (summer 1999)
We all know, that many russians have familiarized with Tarkan's songs only after listening to Filip Kirkorov's covers. "I met Filip while I was in Monaco [in the World Music Awards 1999]. There he gave me his albums and showed me his videoclips. Certainly, when I listenend to the songs in Kirkorov's performance, I was in shock!... But then I thought, it is just one way to sing my songs, a different way, so that's why it's interesting ", Tarkan said. All Tarkan's songs are about love. And the famous hit "Hepsi senin mi?" is known to be taken from the artist's real life. One night, in a Parisian club, Tarkan saw this girl, who was very beautiful. So he lost his mind for her. Unfortunately their love didn't last long. Now the girl lives in Sweden, but the artist recollects her till now when he sings this song. By the way, "Hepsi senin mi?" is translated as " Is it all yours? ". In Turkey that question is frequently asked to beautiful girls. It means: "Are you as pretty as you look?" RUNNIG ON TVER Tarkan, who can't live a day without exercise, was upset when he learned that in his hotel there weren't any fitness facilities. He then decided to go jogging through Moscow's streets. But, having run some meters, he looked back and noticed that his bodygards were lost in between the bunch of fans that began following him. In just a minute, the shouting crowd of fans was running down Tver [the most important street in Moscow], chasing Tarkan. He was very amused, as this reminded him of the Simarik video shooting. OH MAMA, SHIKA DAM! This is the title of Kirkorov's album, which includes the covers of Tarkan's songs. [At the left you can see the album cover]. Kirkorov himself talks about it: "This album is indeed splendid in its dazzling melodies, its captivating rhythms, its colorful eastern traditions like in the fairy tales told by Scheherezade of "1001 Arabian Nights". Experience the wonder, feel sadness and happiness as you listen to these new songs of the old East. Russia is a country bordering both Europe and Asia and every one of us has at least a drop of eastern blood flowing through our veins. I dedicate this album to our Eastern ancestors." Kirkorov created a sensation by bringing the hot flavor of the mysterious Turkey and the Middle East to Russia with his Turkish album "Oh, Mama, Shika Dam!" which became the most popular album of the year. As a result he was honored by the government of Turkey for his contribution to the development of cultural ties between Russia and Turkey.
You must be wondering, who is this Kirkorov? I asked the question myself, the first time Kara talked to me about him. She told me he was the most famous singer in Russia and in nearby countries like Ukraine. I made some research, and here's what I found. WHO IS KIRKOROV? Filip Kirkorov is a russian artist who has received two World Music Awards as a Best Selling Russian Artist of 1996 and 1999. Known as "The Sensation from Russia" he is not only a singer, but also a dancer, a choreographer, a director and a producer. Kirkorov not only performs russian pop music, but he includes songs from different parts of the world, covers from Middle Eastern songs and also including songs in English and Spanish. His newest project is the album in Spanish "Sueńo de Amor", the first ever Spanish language album recorded by a Russian singer. He debuted the first single of the album at the FAMA Awards, in New York on January 2000. He was an instant sensation with the spanish-speaking audience. That performance prompted Don Francisco, the host of latin tv show "Sábado Gigante", to invite Kirkorov to appear on his famous show. On March 18, 2000 Kirkorov made his first official debut in Latin America on "Sábado Gigante". If you want to listen to his versions of Simarik and Sikidim, you must check Filip Kirkorov's official website at: http://www.kirkorov.ru
