This article was
published in a french magazine in November 1998. Thanks a lot to
Sabrina, from France, for sharing it with us.
The
occidental and orientals sounds of his music have seduced the
world. We already talked to you about Tarkan and we thought that
he was ready for our interview, in which all the questions are
allowed!
-If
you were a superhero, which one would you be?
-Superman. I would love to fly. It must be wonderful to be able
to fly all around the world, to be as free as a bird.
-Do you believe in marriage?
-For the moment, I don't really believe in it. I'm not ready to
get united and to have children. But it must be wonderful to
share your life with someone you believe in. Moreover, it's hard
to find the person who you'll give your life in trust. But, who
knows, one day maybe...
-What
would be you ideal romantic evening in Istanbul?
-It's difficult for me to go out in
Istanbul. But I think of a dinner in one of the charming
restaurant of the town. And after, a slow song on the banks of
the Bosphorus.
-If
you met Bill Gates, what would you tell him?
-I heard about his problems. He has lost a little bit of money
and he's in the middle of a lawsuit. I would tell him:
"Don't worry, have a simple life". He's the richest man
of the world and I think that in the end, it must be boring.
-Are
you the man of a one-night stand?
-No, I
like to care about my female partners. I'm rather romantic.
Moreover, there are all these stories about sexually transmitted
diseases, that's why I prefer to stay faithful and not to suffer
the consequences of a one-night stand.
-The
condoms, are they important for you?
-Of
course. I think that every man should be careful. It's stupid to
risk your life for some minutes of pleasure. We must tell that to
everyone. Even if, it's true, the love under plastic, it's not
the same thing. There's something between you and the girl. Life
is too precious to risk death for two minutes of pleasure. Two
minutes, it's not terrible! [He laughs] That's right!
-What
did you want to do when you were a child?
-I
always wanted to sing. Though, I also wanted to be pilot. I told
you, I have always wanted to fly. But I couldn't pilot and sing
at the same time...I should stay concentrated on the controls!
More seriously, I believe that what I do is the fulfillment of a
child's dream.
-Have you ever cried in front of a
film?
-I cry
all the time. Recently, I watched "The English Patient"
with Juliette Binoche. In the last scene, when she injects the
patient, and he dies, I was in tears. I'm emotional enough...I
don't think that men have to refrain from crying, I believe that
we must indulge in our emotions.
-What
do you see from your window?
-In
Istanbul I see the Bosphorus. I live at the top of a hill and I
have a magnificent sight. In New York , I see the Empire State
Building and all the other buildings. I live on the 29° floor.
-Have
you ever watched X-rated films?
-We
have all watched that! I can't deny it. Especially in the
beginning, when you discover the sexuality. All the guys do it.
-The
super answer: Have you ever been arrested?
-No, I
don't make trouble...Well, I had some problems while driving, but
no different than anybody else, some arguments about skipping red
lights. But in Turkey, the policemen recognize me, I sign them an
autograph and all finishes well!
-What
would you do if you met an alien?
-I do
believe in alien-life. I would be very pleased to see one.
Especially if it's someone as E.T., I would kiss him...Smack! [He
send a kiss as in his song]
-What's
the most crazy thing you've ever done for a girl?
-Istambul
is separated in two by the Bosphorus. A bank is european, I live
here, and the other is asiatic. Any bridge connects them. One of
my girlfriends was living on the asiatic side. An evening, I
spent all my money to take her home, so I didn't have any more
money to pay the back boat. I had to beg for.
-We
have finished, what are you going to do now?
-I
will record an emission where I have to meet a fan. I'm going to
show her the turkish culture in Paris and she's going to make me
discover Paris.
