ISTANBUL (DPA)-June 13, 2001- Some pics of popular turkish singer Tarkan, where he is shown in compromising activities with another man, gave rise to a great commotion in Turkey, where the rumors over the years say the artist is gay.

The 28 year old singer, specially admired by girls, has denied many times that he is gay. In fact, he usually can be seen in Istanbul's clubs and bars with very beautiful women, one of which said recently: "If Tarkan was gay, I wouldn't be with him".

However, in press conference, the star was visibly angry, and, despite the fact he didn't confirmed being gay, he said: "I don't regret anything and I'm not ashamed about anything". "The pics are true and not a photomontage", he continued. "This is my life. I should only explain my actions to the one up there [God], not to you [the media]", he said looking up to the sky.

"The only one that must be convicted", he said, "is the thief who stole the pics". Tarkan, who had just returned to Turkey a few months ago, confirmed he will return to New York to have some "fresh air", but not "running away".

Tarkan told Sabah newspaper that the pics are part of a conspiracy and that the people involved "will regret it". He said that they tried to blackmail him with these photos during months. It was also informed that a suspect had already been arrested.

In the meantime, the turkish media discuss with astonishment what they call "the rise of homosexuals in european politics". "While Turkey argues whether Tarkan is gay, in Europe this sexual preference isn't a taboo anymore, not even in politics", says "Hurriyet", in reference to german social-democrat candidate for the mayor's office in Berlin, Klaus Wowereit.

A few weeks ago, a turkish extreme-right politician said: "If Tarkan wasn't gay, we would love him more". But while turkish conservative circles have negative opinions about Tarkan, there are also other people who praise him.

A person wrote in "Sabah": "Tarkan, I, you, we are all free to do what we want and with the people we want. We can be with men, women, or with both men and women."
