ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP)-June 9, 2001-- Police on Saturday detained a man accused of stealing photographs which show pop singer Tarkan naked and then using them to try and blackmail Turkey's biggest star.
One of the photographs, shown on television and published in most Turkish newspapers Saturday, show Tarkan and an unidentified man sunbathing naked on a beach. Another shows Tarkan and a different man, both wearing swimming briefs, in an embrace.
Police detained Suleyman Sahin after Tarkan and his lawyer accused him of stealing the photographs and attempting to blackmail the pop star, who has always insisted that he is not gay.
Tarkan said earlier this year that he would sue Mehmet Gul, a lawmaker from the far-right Nationalist Action Party, who told a newspaper that "If Tarkan were not gay, we'd like him more."
"I was sorry, on my behalf and on society's, when I saw these pictures," daily Sabah quoted Gul as saying Saturday. "Children can be harmed by these kind of things."
Most of Turkey's pop world rushed to defend Tarkan, whose Western pop mixed with Middle-East-influenced rhythms have made him a star in Turkey and Europe.
"Tarkan's sexuality doesn't interest me -- what interests me is his art, and the success that he has achieved internationally," said singer Arto.
