Interview - Gecce.com

Thanks a lot to Zeynep (Turkey) for translating this article, which appeared on Gecce.com on August 26, 2001.

Tarkan's new album is out after 4 years. After the release of Tarkan's new album 'Karma' we made a special interview with him. Tarkan told gecce.com about his new album and projects.

-First, let's start from the title of your album. Why Karma?
-Karma is the life philosophy affecting all of us. My philosophy is also Karma.

-Were you expecting this much interest?
-I knew that, but I wasn't expecting that much success. I'm looking forward to the concerts.

-Your tour starts after Mydonose Showland concert on August 7, right?
-Yes. After Mydodose concert I'll tour the Aegean and the Mediterranean coasts. After them I'll give a concert in Rumeli. I'll have all my fling.

-Did Kuzu Kuzu have the reaction that you were expecting?
-Yes it did but the album is beautiful as a whole. Whatever you do comes back to you.

-It did?
-Yes. If you hurt life, life hurts you back.

-Your image looks different?
-I like changing. I can't stay same all the time. I'd get bored and you'd get bored of me. I'll change all the time.

-So is Tarkan being Michael Jackson?
-No, I dance as me. I become myself. As I'm saying in my song 'Don't be any other, be yourself'. Yes, I want to be known worldwide. My biggest goal is to bring suggestions to the world. I want to be a worldwide star.

-How has the economic crisis affected you?
-It affected all of us , including me. I know Turkish people will overcome it but my heart aches. I want everyone to support each other. And we should also make our voices heard.

-How many records are you expecting to sell?
-I hope it'll sell millions but I'm not talking about money. I want my songs to enter everybody's hearts.

-What will be your first video?
-We don't know yet. We'll shoot the video to the song which gets the most public interest. But it'll probably be 'Ay'. Moreover we are thinking of releasing the album in England.

-We heard that you have started meditation?
-Yes I do. Every morning I stretch my body.

-How long will you stay in Turkey?
-I'm here for two more months and then I'll leave. I'll start working on an English album. I love living in London, Paris and the United States.

-Does Tarkan have a price?
-No, I don't and won't have a price.

-Will falling down from the top scare you?
-I'm not thinking about it. I neither think about past nor future. I'm living the present time. If it happens the person I'll blame will be myself .

-Which Turkish albums you like nowadays?
-Mirkelam's album is very good, it comforts people. Sertab's album is also good. I didn't listen to it as a whole but 'Tatildeyim' is beautiful... In my opinion, in some albums, singers are paying attention to one or two songs and the other songs aren't listened as much as those. All of the songs should be good and beautiful for me. I worked 2 years to achieve that.

-Now let's have your heartfelt wishes.
-I don't have to say anything. Listen to my songs. They tell everything about me.

-Why there aren't any Sezen Aksu songs in this album?
-There's no reason. I didn't have the chance. Everything is destiny. I love Sezen Aksu very much, she's my idol.

-Is there anyone you want to duet with?
-In my opinion, duets are dangerous. I don't think of doing it.

-We heard that you're planning of making an album of Turkish classical music. Is it true?
-No, I'm not thinking about making an album like that, but I love Turkish classical music.

We are thanking Tarkan so much for the interview. Here we explain the philosophy of Karma for the ones who don't know about it.

KARMA

According to Karma, life is settled on a sensitive effect-reaction balance. The things we lived in yesterday, the way we are today and the things that will happen tomorrow are all connected to each other like a long thin chain. Because all things existing in the world are connected to something that happened in the past. The good we made in the past, the positive energy we spread around us, our loves, excitements, good memories will come to us as a 'Good Karma'. The negative things we made will come to us as 'Bad Karma'(unhappiness, etc.). According to Karma everything has its reason. Nothing happens automatically. Or we can say that 'There is no coincidence in coincidence'.
