Turkish Pronunciation

 

This is a list of the letters native to the Turkish language, which aren't found in our western latin alphabet.

Explanatory Notes

Ç

Pronounced like "ch" in "chin".
C

Pronounced like the "j" in "jam".
G

It is always pronounced like the "g" in "go".
ð   The "G" with an accent, this letter isn't usually pronounced, but is used to lenghten the vowel preceding it. Sometimes it is softly pronounced like a "y".
H

Pronounced like the "h" in "help".
I

The "i" without a dot, this letter is pronounced with a sound between "i" and "e".
J

This sound is equivalent to the "s" in "treasure" (English), or to the "j" in "bonjour" (French).
Ö

It is pronounced like the "i" in "bird" (English), or like the "eu" in "feu" (French).
Þ

The "S" with the tail, is pronounced like the "sh" in "short".
Ü

Pronounced like the "u" in "mur" (French). You put your mouth as if you were going to pronounce "u" but you say "i".
