On the Air:  Tutor Corttrell Kinney Discusses Scholarship & Service Opportunities

On Saturday, January 24, 2009, Tutor Corttrell Kinney was interviewed by Meryl, the host of "It's About Justice". The show, which was making its debut that day on WRUW-FM, is a public affairs program that focuses on social justice issues with an emphasis on education.

Corttrell Kinney tutors students in the Saturday Tutoring Program at the Church of the Covenant.During the interview, Meryl spoke with Corttrell about the Gates Millenium Scholarship Program. After Corttrell graduated from the Cleveland Public Schools, he was awarded this prestigous scholarship, which covered all of his college and graduate school expenses. He earned a Bachelor's degree at Morehouse College and is finishing his Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University. To receive the scholarship, students must meet academic criteria and be leaders in the community.

Corttrell continues to be involved in community service himself. He encouraged listeners to volunteer in the Saturday Tutoring Program at the Church of the Covenant, where he has been a tutor for seven years. He also described a few of the other ways that he is encouraging students reach their full potential.

For example, Corttrell leads workshops to help students complete the Gates scholarship application, which requires writing eight essays. He mentors students in Young A.D.U.L.T.S., an organization dedicated to helping youth overcome personal hardships and develop leadership, communication, and networking skills. One of his students, Cedric Thorbes, joined the broadcast to recite an original poem he had written about President Barack Obama's inauguration.

Meryl intends to use "It's About Justice" as a forum to raise awareness about these kinds of opportunites for students, and to discuss issues that affect us all. The show airs Saturdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tune in to 91.1 FM or listen online at www.wruw.org. MP3 recordings are archived until the following week and may be downloaded from the program guide page.
