COLT
MODEL 1849 POCKET REVOLVER

We know something of the user of this pistol. As it came with documentation. Capt James B. Howard enlisted, as a Leiutenant in the Confederate Army on 3 Decenber 1861, at Palmyra, Tenn. and was sworn in by W. F. Young, into Company G, 49th Tennesse Infantry. He was captured at Fort Donelson on 16 Febuary 1862, not quite 3 months later. As a POW he was then sent to Johnson's Island on 16 May 1862, then on to Vicksburg on 1 September 1862. He was then involved in an officer swap and came back into Confederate jurisdiction and went on R & R, then rejoining the Army. Nothing after that. If anyone knows anymore please use the infamous E-Note below. This pistol was manbufactured from 1850 through 1873 with a total production reaching 325,000, making it one of Colt's most popular firearms. This particular revolver was manufactured in 1860, with a 6 shot cylinder and a 4" octagonal barrel and an optional loading lever. The frame, hammer, and loading lever were casehardened with the remainder being blued. The grip frame and trigger guard on this weapon are of un-plated brass. This revolver is the successor to the Baby Dragoon and serial numbering continued that of it's predecessor (with some overlap), begining at about serial number 12,000 and continuing through about 340,000.
