FRANK WESSON |
HISTORY
Okay, okay I know its a man's name not a company. Of all the people and families associated with the firearms industry, Wesson, has had probably more impact than any other. Frank's older brother was the Wesson in Smith and Wesson and his other brother Edwin Wesson manufactured some of the finest muzzle-loading rifles for sport and target. Frank Wesson (1828 to 1899) learned his trade, as you might have guessed from his older brother Edwin In Massachusetts and Connecticut. After his brother's death he spent some time in California before returning home in 1850. Establishing himself in his own gunsmithing business. In 1871 Frank entered into business with Gilbert Harrington they manufactured pistols in the same factory where Frank continued to manufacture his own line of weapons. In 1874 the partnership was dissolved. Frank continued with the production of those before mentioned pistols and rifles. Gilbert Harrington, and former Wesson employee William Richardson formed a company next door to Frank Wesson's factory and begin producing their own line based on the Wesson-Harrington line. That company, Harrington & Richardson continued to produce pistols long after it's founders had died, finally closing its doors in 1983. Marlin is now the parent company, with the company name being "H & R 1871", however I'm told that the new company will have nothing to do with the older H & R weapons. An interesting side note is that a Walgrens now stands where the old factory used to be. |
