Welcome to the Liveoaks
Come in and sit a spell . Not much here yet but will be adding more later.
On this page I plan to put some poems and thoughts written by my Grandfather, Edwin Arnold Brenholtz. These were written in the early nineteen hundreds. Most of these were copied from an old notebook written in pencil and were very hard to read. I have done my best to copy them exactly as written but have had to guess at some words.

my poems

Edwin Arnold Brenholtz

Here is no slavish following
of customs or of rules
no filthy fancy wallowing
in sensual stys or pools
********
Here is the human groping
towards the God-like thought
Here is the heart that's hoping
all evil comes to naught
*********
Here shall be words to cherish
when life seems dark and drear
May they cause doubt to perish
and bring thy heaven near
**********
This touch is not a masters
to set the world aflame
nor can words ward disaster
from those who love my name
**********
But in the hours of leasure
they may perchance bring joy
to those who've known woes seizure
of days he'd fain enjoy
**********
So since surcease they're bringing
of pain ee'n as I write
May their sweet, rhythmic, ringing
set others ills to flight

SOLDIERLY

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The glory of a solider and a soldier's not a saint
Is the way he does his duty without grumbling or complaint:
His work is not always pleasant,but he does it rain or shine,
And he grabs a bit of glory when he's fighting in the line,
But the lesson that he teaches everyday to me an' you
is the way to do a duty that we do not like to do.
~~~~~~~~~~

Any sort of chap can whistle when his work is mostly fun;

A hundred wants the pleasant job to every sturdy one

That will grab the dreary duty an' the mean an' lowly task

Or the drab an' cheerless service that life often has to ask

But someone has to do it,and the test for me an' you

Is the way we face the labor thar we do not like to do
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now it isn't very pleasant standin' guard out in the rain
But it is in the line of duty, an' no soldier will complain
An' there isn't any soldier but what some times hates his work
When the dress parade is over, an' perhaps he'd like to shirk
But he's there to follow orders, not to pick an' choose his post
An' he sometimes shines the finest at the job he hates the most.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Let's be soldiers in the struggle,let's be loyal through an' through

Life is going to give us duties that perhaps we will hate to do.

There will be little sacrifices that we will not like to make,

There will be many task unpleasant that will fall for us to take

An' although we all would rather take the work that brings applause

Lets forget our wims and fancies an' labor just for the cause

A Psalm of Thanksgiving

by
Edwin Arnold Brenholtz

I thank thee Lord of life and death
for this untortured morning breath
For mind attuned to praise and bless
Forget the ills, the good confess.
Mine eyes behold snows mantel thrown
upon the earth as though 't'were shone
Thy love protects, conceals defects,
And thy own purity reflects.
No room is here to ask for gifts:
Before my gaze a curtain lifts
and shows that perfect trust ask naught,
accepts unquestioned what is brought;
Aye,would not plead for fuller love-
that were a doubt all doubts above.
Not e'en for daily bread I'll pray.
Throughout eternity this day
hath been foreseen and all it's needs
provided for.I'll do days deeds
demanded by thought that impells
and not as one who shirks, rebells
or would have otherwise his lot:
Here is that praise, asking not
The inward longings, unsupprest
are prayer enough- to thee addrest.
Can not who made me read my heart?
Can He not penetrate each part
and know without words wildering sounds
the secret wish, desire profound
Here is thanksgiving-thanks alone
and perfect trust in goodness shown.
Thanks for each item- barring none-
sums up this man behold this sun.
What could I change and leave me,Me
Omnipotence brought me to be.
Here's thanks for entity confined
for man exemplified by mind
for aspirations for the best
for trust that putteth all at rest

Wish We Ever

by

Edwin Arnold Brenholtz

In the middle of winter,
we wish for the spring
Just to be rid of cold
and hear the birds sing
On the first day of spring
we get tired to the heart
and just wish sweet summer
would bid her depart
E'een foretaste of fine summer
with sultry days heat
"Oh good Lord" send us winter
we haste to repeat
In the middle of winter---
But Zounds! that's the place
where we started our wishing
at galloping pace
So from childhood to age--
from cradle to grave
we just wish and we want
and we want and we crave
for the things we've not,
whatsoever our lot
and with single exception,
much less than we've got
for of heat and of cold,
of the wet and the dry
of location too low
and location too high
we still grumble and growl
till we're worn out and old
But whoever heard us wishing
for less of bright gold?

Lady Birds Bed Time

Edwin Arnold Brenholtz
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I will sing ,little lady, a lullabye lay
Now, don't shake your dear head in that resolute way.
For you know that the time for the telling of tales
That are full of great giants and wonderous whales
or of gnomes or of fairies or even white mice
with the light went away, so just snuggle up nice
refrain
Snuggle up close to the heart that is beating
fondly with love that is ever entreating,
angels to guard in the watches of night
this ,my own treasure, my hearts true delight
Just one more little story,"well what shall it be".
Something new or quite old, of the land or the sea.
Not another quite new one! Dear child why I told
every new one I had, prey now,please do not scold
If you will just lay quite still, and count twenty, five times
I'll be sure of a story of a fish that climbs
refrain
Snuggle up close to the heart that is beating
fondly with love that is ever entreating,
angels to guard in the watches of night
this ,my own treasure, my hearts true delight
Now then do your counting ,for I have to think
and if you will close your eyes they won't have to blink-blink
If you keep asking questions the story won't come
and you'll never accomplish that terrable sum
of "one two six twenty"-dear me ,how you count
Now then try it all over and name the amount
refrain
Snuggle up close to the heart that is beating
fondly with love that is ever entreating,
angels to guard in the watches of night
this ,my own treasure, my hearts true delight
WEll, well, well! I'll whisper that I am afraid
There's no need for that story for which Lady Bird prayed
For you see those numbers danced round in her head
Till "makth me kite dithity", yes that's what she said
For between you and me, it was time for repose
Quite a long time before she would let her eyes close
refrain
Snuggle up close to the heart that is beating
fondly with love that is ever entreating,
angels to guard in the watches of night
this ,sleeping treasure, with their utmost might
