Buffy-headed Marmoset (Callithrix flaviceps)


MORPHOLOGY:
The buffy-headed marmoset has nonopposable thumbs and nails of the digits which are claw-like.

RANGE:
The buffy-headed marmoset is found in the Atlantic rainforest of South-east Brazil (Rylands et al., 1993). This species is found in the states of Minas Gerais and Southern Espirito Santo in Brazil (Nowak, 1999). This species is found in altitudes above 400 meters (Rylands et al., 1993).

ECOLOGY:
Ferrari (1988) has found that gum makes up 72.5 % of the plant diet and fruit, nectar, flowers, and seeds make up 15.9% of the plant diet for the buffy-headed marmoset.

LOCOMOTION:
The buffy-headed marmoset moves quadrupedally through the forest and is capable of short leaps (Fleagle, 1988)

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR:
The buffy-headed marmoset actively shares food with the infants after weaning, the food shared by the care taker (Ferrari, 1987). New group formation could come about from two sets of twins from different groups (Ferrari and Lopes Ferrari, 1989).

REPRODUCTION:
This species gives birth to twins (Fleagle, 1988).
