Crowned Lemur (Eulemur coronatus)


MORPHOLOGY:
The legs on this species are longer than the arms, and it has a long, bushy tail. Crowned Lemurs also possess binocular vision. In the female, the vulva closes when not in estrus.

RANGE:
This species lives in the Northern part of Madagascar, primarily in the dry forests and savannas.

ECOLOGY:
This is primarily a herbivorous species, subsisting on flowers, fruits, and leaves.

LOCOMOTION:
The crowned lemur moves quadrupedally.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR:
Two type of social groups constitute this species. One consisting of a monogamous pair and their offspring, and the other consisting of multimale, mixed-aged groups.

Crowned Lemur VOCAL COMMUNICATION:
alarm call: consists of a high-pitch "crou" sound, somewhat similar to Eulemur fulvus.

OLFACTORY COMMUNICATION:
In this species it is highly developed. The crowned lemur has scent glands on the hands, arms, face, genitals, and anus which it uses in communication.
