In 1908, at Howard University in
Washington, D.C., Ethel Hedgeman Lyle,
along with fifteen other young
ladies founded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
making it the oldest
international Greek-letter Organization established in
America by and
for Black women. Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated in
1913 and has
grown from one undergraduate group of 16 members to an
international
organization. The sorority was founded to be an instrument
for enriching
the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing
mental
stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.
Alpha Kappa
Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical
standards;
promotes unity and friendship among college women;
alleviates problems
concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest
in college
life; and strives to be supreme in service to all mankind through a
nucleus of more than 200,000 women in over 860 chapters.
