The provincial capital, on the Mestizo River, four km. fom the coast, is a town about 37,000 with some of the Philippines best remaining Spanish colonial architecture and many antique shops. Its a pleasant place to spend a couple of days strolling the plazas and streets, where horse-drawn calesas still serve residents. In recent years, Vigan has become inundated which motorized bikes with sidecars that disrupt the subtle charm of the place. It's pleasant to get up early before the crunch of traffic or better yet roam the old colonial streets at night.
