Norhtern Samar occupies the entire northern portion of Samar, with a coastline bordering on the Samar Sea, San Bernardino Strait, and the Pacific. This province (3,498 square km) has the most extensive lowland areas, along the coast and up the valleys of the Catarman, Catubig, and the Palapag rivers. Rice and abaca are the main crops. The two main routes follow the northern and western coastlines; there's no east-coast road connection with Eastern Samar. Northern Samar offers the visitor some good beaches, offshore islands, waterfalls, and hot springs. An old Spanish port, Catarman s the provincial capital, a university town, and the commercial center for Samar's northern plains.

Northern Samar is bounded on the north by Philippine Sea, on the east by the Eastern Samar, Samar Sea on the west, and Western Samar and Samar Sea on the south.

Most of the towns are situated along the northern coast facing the San Bernardino Strait. In the late 16th century, the strait was part of the galleon trade route of the Spaniards between Manila and Acapulco. A royal port was established in the cove of Palapag, a town east of the capital, where the trade vessels were repaired by experienced native shipbuilders. In the mid-17th century, many of these Samareños migrated to Cavite after they had been recruited by the Spanish authorities to work at the new shipyard there. Many Caviteños may therefore trace their roots to this now sleepy coastal town. The only evidence of its busy maritime past is a tall, lonely stone-tower used as a lookout for invading Moslem pirates.

Climate / weather. The weather in Northern Samar due to the Pacific and the San Bernadino strait are very different from the rest of the Philippines. Rainy season here is from Dec. to Feb. and a long dry seasson from Mar. to Nov.. The wind is N.E from October to Mar. and from April to Sept. the wind id SSW. The last typhoon was in dec. 95.

Tourist industry. Those in search of peace and a way out place could do no better than to look at Northern Samar. Perhaps the finest points are the people and the eco systems and wildlife which abounds. Eagles in the sky and turtles in the sea.
Lately many investors are moving into the area for tourism as the entire province of Northern Samar is totally unknown due to the many year of insurgency. Investment opportunities are all around as the land prices are still extremely low.
The area is perhaps one of the last remaining true Filipino Provinces where many people have never seen a European, where Eagles fly and life remains at a basic level with truly hospitable and nice people.
The Governor and the local government have decided to invest in Dalupiri Island the municipality of S Antonio as a tourism island from where the visitor can easily tour the province of Northern Samar.
