"The
Starchild". Elizabeth is the result of a genetic experiment manipulated
by Diana - her mother is Robin Maxwell, while her father was a Visitor,
Brian, who was killed by Robin. Her growth accelerates at a rapid
rate - within weeks Elizabeth looked like a 3 or 4 year old child, and
at several months she looked like an 8 year old girl. Using her unheard-of
psychic abilities, Elizabeth was able to halt the self-destruct sequence
on the LA Mothership at the end of the First Invasion, and prevented the
certain nuclear destruction of Earth.
Shortly after the
Second Invasion, Elizabeth once again experienced a growth acceleration,
shedding her skin and emerging as an 18 year old girl. She is still
learning how to handle her burgeoning emotions, and she and Kyle Bates
have fallen in love. Elizabeth cannot control her powers - and the
Resistance works to keep her out of Visitor hands.
Captured by Diana, Elizabeth is on the bridge of the mothership when Diana sets it for self-destruct. Displaying an uncanny, inexplicable power, Elizabeth is able to shut down the overload reaction in the starship's engines, thus saving everyone's life.
A year later, Elizabeth develops a fever and begins exhibiting signs that she is taking on more alien characteristics. Fleeing, she enters a cave and undergoes a metamorphosis within a cocoon which forms around her. When she emerges, she looks like an 18-year-old woman.
Wandering off by herself, still with the mind of a small child, she creates a disturbance with her strange powers and meets Kyle Bates. He helps her even though he doesn't know she's the Starchild. Kyle is the son of the powerful Nathan Bates, but he and his father do not see eye-to-eye about collaborating with the Visitors.
When Kyle learns that Elizabeth is really the Starchild in a new form, she also exhibits other mental powers which save the Resistance on more than one occasion.
Diana is not about to lose such a prize and so, through a clever scheme, she obtains a blood sample from Elizabeth and creates a clone. but the clone is not only powerful, she is murderous and uncontrollable. She escapes from the Visitor's embassy in Los Angeles and begins killing anyone who encounters her, be they human or alien. She is even mistaken at one point for Elizabeth, but when she finally tracks down the real Elizabeth, the clone dies at the Starchild's feet and Elizabeth feels as though she has lost a sister.
Kyle is still madly in love with Elizabeth and is most unhappy when The Leader comes to Earth to sue for peace and states that he wants the Starchild for his bride. Elizabeth agrees, much to Kyle's dismay.
Suitably garbed, Elizabeth enters the Leader's ship to return with him to his homeworld, but after the craft has left it becomes clear that Kyle has hidden himself aboard to try and win Elizabeth back.
