Comments
Somewhat simplistically written but an enjoyable story.  Unfortunately the characterization of Willie is
completely off the mark - he is portrayed here as emotionally and physically "strong" where I have always
seen Willie as somewhat insecure and afraid, not fully prepared for the life that he is leading.  Sullivan could
have improved the story by creating an original character for this central role.  I also had a problem with
Willie shedding his pseudo-skin midway through the book and then running around un-selfconsciously
"naked" spouting Zon wisdom...

Major Plot Points

Memorable Moments
p. 27  The Visitors eliminate the Resistance
Something rose slowly over the top of the cliff.
"Good Lord ... "  It was the skyfighter.  The cars were driving right toward it now.
The skyfighter took a stationary position over the highest point of the cliff, where the road took a sharp turn.  A bolt of blue light shot out of it's bird-of-prey prow.  The car in front caught fire, swerved, and went off the edge of the cliff.  The screams of the men inside could be heard as they plummeted to their deaths.
A second car was hit, exploding right there on the road.  The vehicle behind it tried to stop, the squeal of the brakes audible to Pythias.  But it was no good.  The driver couldn't stop in time.  His car fishtailed into the burning wreckage, and both vehicles went over the cliff.  The fourth car was picked off by a laser, roasting the
men inside alive.

p. 124  Willie uses his mental powers to communicate with an animal
He tried to actually enter the bear's mind on its own level.  There was nothing but darkness at first, but then a glimmer of concern flickered across his consciousness - worry about feeding the young, about the coming winter, about the strange creatures who had invaded the island.
Then he felt a direct mind link with the bear!
Willie thought hard about the twine fastening him to the tree.  He imagined Roland killing him while he was
helplessly bound.  The bear whined in sympathy.
Certain that the bear understood, Willie made a mental image of it chewing at the twine.  He tried to visualize this in every detail.  His eyes still closed, he felt something warm on his wrist.  He did not dare open his eyes for fear that the bear would lose the mental projection.  He continued to think of nothing else but his liberation, feeling the bear's saliva on his scales.

The Back of the Book ...

Who Goes There ... Friend or Foe?

As the war between the Visitors and the forces of resistance grows more intense, a stranger walks into a small
New England fishing village.  He has volunteered for a secret experiment, conducted by Dr. Randall Brunk and
his daughter, to develop a new toxin and antidote to fight the Visitors and free the Earth from their threat.  His
disguise is soon peeled away and reveals him to be a Visitor.  But is he an enemy?  Or is there truth to his story?

Pythias Day, a local fisherman, believes him - and puts his own life on the line to save the Visitor.  Soon they are
both targets of a desperate hunt across an island wilderness, with the Visitors most brutal enforcer at their heels,
and the hope of the resistance riding on their survival.
