CHATTANOOGA 2009 HILL CLIMB

Model A’s started arriving in Chattanooga on Thursday, August 6 from points throughout the country. States represented were TN, AL, SC, NC, GA, FL, PA, NY, OH, IN, and TX. We boarded the Delta Queen Riverboat which was to be our host hotel for the weekend. After checking in and receiving our goody bags from our hosts, the Scenic City A’s, we settled in for a pleasant weekend cruise on the Tennessee River. (Actually the boat never left the dock as it is prohibited from sailing by the Coast Guard – maybe that is why the cruise was so smooth).

On Friday morning all of the Model A’s lined up and we traveled to the top of Raccoon Mountain. TVA has built a lake on top of the mountain to store water. The water is released in times of peak electrical demand to drive turbines to produce electrical power. The lake is re-filled in times of low demand. The tour was very largely on remote semi private roads and was capped off by a catered BBQ chicken and ribs picnic with all the trimmings (some say that unique flavor was some of the raccoons got trapped in the cooker). One thing Model A folks like to do is to EAT!

Saturday morning arrived and we started setting up the timing equipment, streets were barricaded, and city police positioned to direct traffic. Our hill again was on 6^th street in downtown Chattanooga right beside the courthouse and jail.

In August the one thing you can count on in the South is HEAT! The weatherman did not disappoint as the temperature was hovering around the 90 degree mark. Luckily plenty of shade was close by the pit area and we could hunt out a “dark spot” to cool down our bodies. Spectators could lounge under the shade trees and watch the race in relative comfort.

David Moore did not play the gracious host and let his guests win as he drove his 1931 Pick Up to victory in the S-1 class.

Mark Van Acker from Greeley, PA was having so much fun driving in the M-1 class that he registered again in the ST-1 class. Mark took off one carburetor to qualify for the class and stuffed the manifold opening with an old sock. Mark proved that two is not always better than one as his time in the ST-1 class was better than his M-1 class time.

Jim Boggs from N. Charleston, SC raced to edge out his side kick in the ST-2 class.

Mike Bogart from Troy, OH blew away everyone in the M-1 class with his 1931 Roadster.

David Young from Hendersonville, NC raced solo in the M-2 class.

Curt Gibbs from Franklin, TN was unchallenged as he drove in his first hill climb with his 1932 Roadster in the M-3 class.

This year the biggest competition was with the Speedsters. Nine (9) Speedsters with Eleven (11) drivers were signed up to run in the SP-1 class. Unfortunately Ron Kelley’s Speedster bit the dust early and Ron and his daughter Rebekah became spectators. Ray Stilwell from Slate Hill, NY had his 1927 Speedster tuned to perfection as he dominated the SP-1 class. Eunice Stilwell drove the same Speedster to take Queen of the Hill honors.

The most fun in the SP-1 class was had by Felipe Cos from Coral Gables, FL. Felipe ran and ran and ran the hill until we were afraid a permanent groove was going to be made in the pavement. Bravo Felipe!!!!

Ken Miller had repaired his Speedster which broke in the April hill climb in Unicoi. Ken had recovered from his back problems and was anxious to show everyone how FAST his new OHV motor really was. Ken made one practice run and yeah you got it! – the motor broke and he and his grandson Seth became spectators.

Dave Hoover from Oviedo, FL brought his new Speedster which virtually had never been run. The Speedster got to be a little “squirrelly” and after a few adjustments were made Dave turned over the controls to Ron Kelley from Royse City, TX. Ron Kelly proceeded to capture top honors in the SP-2 class and to be King of the Hill. We wonder who will get to wear the “King” belt buckle or will they take turns?

The Scenic City A’s were wonderful hosts for this event. David Moore and his club members had everything organized and planned for a very enjoyable time
