Victor Noriega, an exclusive interviewSource:
ERES, February 16, 2001 Victor Noriega began his artistic career with the group Garibaldi more than 12 years ago, he entered as an actor in the telenovela "Rencor Apasionado", together with Natalia Esperón, Eduardo Santamarina, and Aracely Arámbula. His next participation was in "Camila", with Bibi Gaytan and Eduardo Capetillo. From there he made "Rosalinda", with Thalía and Fernando Carrillo. In 1999 he was in Mujeres Engañadas", and now in 2000 he returns to work with Natalia Esperón, but now as the leading man, his first starring role, in the telenovela "Por Un Beso." --What was your first role of great importance in the telenovelas? The one I did in "Rosalinda, because it finished solidifying many things; the image that I had with Garibaldi at the international level was greatly reinforced with the novelas of Thalía, which traveled around the world. I was fascinated, because I dreamed of working with her, I was very happy to have had such an important part." |
--Have you done only good guy roles? Yes. Afterwards I had the opportunity to interpret a gigolo in "Mujeres Engañadas" and it was incredible, because it was a great change. He was a very interesting character with a great conflict. Finally the proposal arrived from Angelli Nesma to make "Por Un Beso", which in the beginning was for a secondary part. At the time I was doing the reading with the directors and in the screen test, they saw in me possibilities for the leading role. --The first one for you . Yes. I was up against several actors for the role, because the other one I already had confirmed. But finally I had to compete for it. --With other actors more known? They said that Carlos Ponce was going to make the telenovela, and in that case, Eduardo Verástegui. Fortunately, Angelli decided in my favor, because I looked more the type. --Were you uncomfortable that they chose an actor only for the type? |

As an
actor you have to be very aware that they are forming a
cast. It depends on your part and on your family in the
novela. If your father is the top actor, you have to look
a little bit like him, so there. You have to be preparing
as much on the acting level as you are to change your
appearance. There are certainly a number of "leading
men" in the enterprise (Televisa), guys who are in
this category: Gattorno, Juan Soler, Verástegui. They
are there because of their physical type, but even more
because they are well prepared. If they weren't, they
would be models and that's all. --When you left Garibaldi, did you intend to get into television or did they offer it to you? I had that idea, so much so that I took acting classes and got myself prepared. My first part, in "Rencor..", was in the same way as this one. I stood there to do the screen test, they offered me a part with 50 chapters, which was a great, great, achievement. That, for someone who was barely beginning, is a great deal. I wasn't anywhere near taking the leading role in the story, but obviously they were not going to launch someone so little prepared and not so well known in his facet as an actor. --Was it harder to get the part because they did not know you? |
OK, the producers and the director wanted
to introduce me, but the enterprise said that they had to
see, first, if I worked for the cameras, because it was
going to 50 countries and they were not going to put just
anybody in the starring role. Everything has to pass
through evaluation. I believe that they made the correct
decision. --Didn't you want to keep singing any more? In part, yes, but it was better that things came about as they did and that I could have acquired a lot of experience with the co-starring roles, because now that I am in the lead I do not make so many mistakes. The career of a singer is very trying. On one hand it is an incredible experience to travel everywhere in the world, but it is also going through airports, highways, traveling all the time, in busses, hotels and the time comes that this drains you. In my case, now I have work days that go from 12 to 14 hours, but I know that I am going to sleep in my own house and that the weekends I am going to see my family. --If someone proposed to you returning to singing, would you do it? If I get the urge to once again have the contact with the public. I had the opportunity to do it with "Reunion 10" which the ex-Garibaldis had, and I loved being back on the stage again. |

Don't forget, it's something that I have there. It has cost me a great deal to be accepted as an actor. I think that this first starring role is already something important. To return to singing is going to take me time, but if I do it I want it to be for enjoyment.
--Have you done musical theater?
Nooo! I would like it a lot, because I know that I can do it. Here in Mexico it is very tiring, because there are many performances, 3 or 4 days a week. But I definitely would like to be for a short period in an interesting work.
--What is the greatest difference between the music environment and that of acting?
As a singer you have a producer and a representative, your schedule is very tight, you do radio, television programs, you learn the choreography, the dances, and everything is perfectly planned. Now that I work in the production of a telenovela I do not have a representative, I am more free, I can chose what I want, and besides that I interact a lot with my companions.
--Where do you make more friends?
I believe that being in the studio filming a novela, because you spend more time there. You never lack for finding your friends, people you know, and you have more experiences. With singers, you are limited to only bump into each other at the awards ceremonies, radio festivals, or when you travel with them in some airplane. With a telenovela, the interaction is for 8 months or more.
--Have you known environments where there is more competition or where the vibes were bad?
No. You see, I have been able to work with very professional people, and I have enjoyed myself a lot.
--What has been the most difficult telenovela to make?
"Rosalinda", because Thalía demands a lot, and although she helped me the director was also very strict. I was very nervous.
--Would you work with Thalía again? Would you feel the same?
It would depend on who (what part) they might give me, because I wasnt nervous because of her, it was the pressure of the production.
--Would you go into "Solo Para Mujeres"? (Note: "For Women Only" is an all-male revue which has even more sexual content and semi-nudity than the Chippendales in the USA)
They invited me to participate, but the bottom line is that it is not a goal of mine to strip, apart from the other plans that I have. Besides, in Garibaldi we went out naked (laughter). Now I am trained for other things. But if I make a picture where the acting requires a nude scene, there it would definitely be a goal. Actually, they are not going to see anything they havent already seen. I want to certify myself as a leading man, and from there run to other things to launch myself as a singer, in another plan, but with two or three starring telenovelas. In fact, I have already had somebody or another approach me for another novela, but nothing concrete.
--What is needed to triumph in this field?
To have your feet firmly on the ground, be very responsibly, have a lot of desire to do things well, have a good disposition, be friendly, and humble.
