1983 - First motor race at Brands Hatch in Formula Ford 2000 winter series.
1984 - First motor racing victory, driving a FF1600 at Brands Hatch. Won the Grovewood Award (currently known as the McLaren Autosport Award)
1985 - Completed full season of FF1600. 3rd in Esso FF1600 Championship. 3rd in Formula Ford Festival
1986 - Competed in Lucas British F3 Championship with Murray Taylor Racing. Winner of televised Rally-Sprint against World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist and F1 Drivers Derek Warwick and Johnny Dumfries.
1987 - 5th in the Lucas British F3 Championship with Intersport
1988 - 3rd in Lucas F3 Championship with Intersport. Competed in two races in FIA International F3000 Championship with GA Motorsport. First drive in a Formula One car - Benetton-Ford 188 (turbo) at Paul Ricard.
1989 - One race in British F3000 Championship and one race in British Touring Car Championship. Le Mans 24 Hour Race with Richard Lloyd in Porsche 962. Drove for Footwork Formula team in Mooncraft-Mugen MC-041 in International F3000
1990 - Competed in International F3000 Championship with Middlebridge EJR F3000 team in Lola Cosworth DFV T90/50 1991 Competed in International F3000 Championship with Middlebridge F3000 team. Became official test driver for Williams Formula One team.
1992 - Official test driver for Williams Formula One. Drove for Brabham Formula One team and qualified for his first Grand Prix at Silverstone, finishing 16th.
1993 - Drove for Williams Renault with Alain Prost. First Grand Prix victory on 15th August at Hungaroring. Two more victories - Belgium and Italy. Finished 3rd in the World Championship.
1994 - 2nd in F1 World Championship for Williams Renault. 6 race wins, 2 pole positions. After tragic death of team mate Ayrton Senna, he was partnered by David Coulthard (for 8 races) and Nigel Mansell (for 4 races). Winner of BBC Sports Personality of the Year
1995 - 2nd in F1 World Championship for Williams Renault. 4 race wins, 7 pole positions.
1996 - F1 World Champion for Williams Renault
1997 - 12th in F1 World Championship for Arrows-Yamaha
