Wells - Public Transport
Trains
Many years ago Wells had a railway station - unfortunately this has long gone. It's a real shame as I'm sure a train service would prove very popular these days and hopefully it would have attracted visitors and enticed them to leave their cars at home.
The nearest rail stations are
Castle Cary - approx 15 miles South-East of Wells, approx 8 miles South of Shepton Mallett. There is a service up to London-Waterloo and down towards Plymouth. Castle Cary itself is a fairly remote station. If my understanding of the local bus timetable is correct then it appears there is only one bus per week on a Sunday - number 912.
Bath - The Spa station is adjacent to the Bath bus station. Frequent trains to London-Paddington and Bristol, plus South Wales. Local Buses 173 and 773 go to Wells. The bus journey to Wells ( approx 20 miles directly ) can take about 1 hour and 30 mins as it meanders.
Buses
Wells does have a bus station, located in Princes Road, opposite Tesco. Buses are operated by numerous local firms and offer connections to nearby towns such as Bath, Bristol, Taunton, Frome, Bridgewater, Weston-Super-Mare , Yeovil, Wincanton plus far off Weymouth. Support local buses - use them !
