     The major component of the Cardio-Roller, the shaft, is the most critical part of the device. It will support all the weight of the person in the wheelchair. The following is the properties of steel that we use as the shafts for the rollers.  This is an actual program used to run ANSYS.

     Below is the set up of the constraints at the end of the shaft and the uniform load distribution along the surface of the shaft.

     The shaft is fixed in the x, y direction but it is free to rotate around the z-axis. A uniformly distributed force in the y-direction is shown. We have used an average force of 250 lbs. for our calculations.

     Next, we applied the mesh to the shaft using the default temple from ANSYS.

This figure shows the critical points on the shaft.  The brighter the color of the material is more likely to fail.
