Synopsis

Young Hal Courtney has been trained in the skills of seafaring and of naval combat in preparation for the day when he takes over captaincy of the 'Lady Edwina' from his father Sir Francis. It is 1667 and the mighty naval war between the Dutch and the English still rages.

Sir Francis Courtney and his son, in their fighting caravel, are on patrol off Southern Africa, lying in wait for a galleon of the Dutch East India Company returning from the Orient laden with spices, timber and gold, but as the caravel sails the length of the coast of Africa, fate has some unexpected tests of courage in store: mutiny, treachery, the wiles of a dangerous woman and imprisonment...

Book dedication: This book is for Danielle Antoinette. For thirty years your love has been my shield; your strength and courage have been my sword.
Author's note: Although this story is set in the mid-seventeenth century, the galleons and caravels in which my characters find themselves are more usually associated with the sixteenth century. Seventeenth-century ships often bore a strong resemblance to those of the sixteenth century, but as their names may be unfamiliar to the general reader, I have used better-known, if anachronistic, terms to convey an accessible impression of their appearance. Also, for the sake of clarity, I have simplified terminology in respect of firearms and, as it exists as such in common idiom, I have occasionally used the word 'cannon' as a generic.
In depicting the complex, choked relationship between Francis and his son Hal, Smith drew upon his own relationship with his father, Herbert. I had a very powerful, strong father. Almost Victorian, very domineering. He instilled in me certain morals that have stood me in good stead throughout my life - the work ethic, and the idea of being useful. He was equipping me for life as is Hal's father, Sir Francis, in the book.

Reader Reviews

 From Andre' Mes -
Once again, Smith's attention to detail has afforded him another classic novel that literally sweeps the reader into a world of violence, sex and adventure. Hal Courteney is a likeable hero and I found myself rotting for him all the way. I particularly enjoyed the way Smith used the early settlement on Cape Town as a backdrop.. I have since read the book twice and found it just as exciting as the first time I read it. A wonderful beginning to the Courteney dynasty.
The scope is magnificent and the epic scale breathtaking...Wilbur Smith is one of those benchmarks against whom others are compared. - The Times
A gripping tale, relentless in its flow, that evokes a more colourful age - one of passion and a majesty of spirit that is seldom illustrated with such nerve. - Express
Meticulous research supports constant excitement in a fast-moving tale. - Washington Post
