ICQ INSTRUCTIONS
Once you've downloaded, installed and clicked on ICQ to run, there should be a Flower on the right end of task bar. It will be Green when you are online and connected to ICQ server. It will be Red when you are not connected to ICQ server and a little box when not connected to your server (Citcom).
There should be a small ICQ window open. If it is not open, right- click on the flower in the task bar and select Open ICQ.
When the ICQ window is open, along the top of the ICQ window, your UIN (registration) number will be showing.
There will be two buttons directly under the number: All and Online
- ALL Button - when pressed will list ALL users you have entered in 3 or 4 different areas. (I use this one all the time.)
- 1. Those online
- 2. Those offline
- 3. Future Users - Those you have entered but who haven't installed ICQ as yet.
- 4. Add Users - This may or may not show.
- 5. There may be other sections, depending on various things.
- ONLINE button - when pressed will list only those users you have entered who are Online when you are.
CONFIGURATION (Preferences)
To get to Preferences, click on ICQ icon in lower left corner of ICQ window and select Preferences.
Eight or more tabs will appear. I changed only the following:
- CONTACT LIST - On the right in the Contact List Options, check the 5th option down: Show Online Only tab in the Contact List.
- EVENTS - In ALL EVENTS I checked all 3.
I checked the first option in other three areas.
- STATUS - In Enter Default Away/...
Away should have a dot in it.
Type in a message that you want to appear when a person tries to reach you and you are marked Away to them.
- MODE OPTIONS - Check first 3 items.
- EMAIL - Place a dot in: User specified email client and type the path to your email program in the blank. Example:c:\eudora\eudora.exe
- CONNECTION - Place dot in: I'm using Modem
Click: Launch ICQ on Startup
Click: Automatically activate Sleep Mode upon disconnection.
Leave all the other tabs as is for the time being.
TO ADD USERS
- Click on the ICQ button in lower left corner of ICQ window. Click on Search/Add users to add those you know are users of ICQ or who will be users in the future.
- Click Email tab. Type in email address of a user or future user and hit the Search Button.
- A box will appear with his name if he is registered with ICQ. Follow directions by double-clicking on his name. Either he will be automatically added to your list or you will be asked to request his permission by typing in a request in a box. Then click on REQUEST BUTTON in lower left.
- If he is not registered, a box will appear. Just follow directions in that box.
- After the preceding procedure, you will find another area in the ICQ window marked Waiting Authorization.
OR
- Click on the ICQ button in lower left corner of ICQ window. Click on Future Users Watch and follow directions.
- Another area will be added to your ICQ window marked as Future Users Watch.
TO RUN PROGRAM
If you already have an active list of people in the Online or the Offline area of the ICQ window, you can make contact. Following are Menus to help you use the program. All these commands are to be used in the ICQ Window.
- I. Right click on a USER NAME (that is, if you have a User entered) in either Online or Offline area.
A menu will appear containing some of the following:
- RECEIVE - If a message is waiting, click on Receive.
- Message - Click on Message and you will be able to send a message immediately to that user. If he is online, he will get it almost immediately. If he is not online, it will be waiting for him when he next gets on line.
- Chat - Click on Chat to initiate a chat session, where you can type messages back and forth simultaneously, can even see while it is being typed.
- File - assume this is where a file can be sent to a user online.
- URL - Have not tried this yet
- Video/voice games - can go to NetMeeting from here, but I haven't not had succes with this.
- View History - History of your messages with this person.
- Email - You can send email from here if you are configured to do so.
- Alert/Accept Modes - Settings so that when the user is online, you will be alerted immediately without having to check the window. No matter what you are doing or what program you are in, an Alert box will pop up in the middle of the screen if you have selected any of these. Be selective here or it will drive you crazy.
- Info - Information about that user.
I haven't listed them all as I haven't used them all. If one or more is greyed out, those commands are not available at that time. When user is online, all are available.
- II. Click on ICQ button on lower left of ICQ screen.
Here are a few of the options:
- Connect/Disconnect with server. Must be connected to server for ICQ to run. (Can see ICQ servers in preferences/servers)
- Search/Add user (pretty much as it says)
- Future Users watch
- Preferences - Configuration.
- Help - very good help
- Sleep Mode - This is the one to activate. Then when you are offline, ICQ will go into Sleep Mode and will automatically be activated when you get back online. You will not have to do anything to connect with ICQ server.
- III. Right click on word SYSTEM just above ICQ button in ICQ window - you can figure these out. Or experiment. I almost never use this.
- IV. Click on Flower just to right of ICQ button at bottom of ICQ window.
- Online/Connect - to connect or disconnect from server.
- Away - You can activate this so no one will disturb you when you are online. Just be sure to inactivate it when you are ready to receive messages. It marks you in other users' screens as unavailable.
There will be a square over your flower showing you are not available. They can still send messages, etc., for you to read when you are ready. When you mark yourself Away, you will see the same symbol over the flower just to the right of the ICQ symbol at bottom of screen and on Task Bar - so you won't forget how you appear to others. You also will be given the option of showing a message when anyone tries to reach you and you are in AWAY mode.
- Do Not Disturb - I would NEVER use this because no one can even send a message to you then. At least, with the Away button, you can receive messages, etc., and answer at your leisure. With this one activated, you are completely cut off from anyone.
- Privacy - (Invisible) Use this one sparingly also.
- Offline - to disconnect. If you have set up Preferences correctly, you will NEVER want to disconnect. It will be taken care of automatically if you chose Sleep Mode.
WHEN SOMEONE IS CONTACTING YOU
There will be a yellow icon blinking on the task bar and/or next to the user
's name when there is a message for you from that person. Double-Click on it
and it should appear. The screen that will appear will have a choice for
you to answer or disregard. Also, if your sound is on, it will sound like:
"Coo Coo!" Or if there is a message blinking next to a user's name, right
click on that User and select RECEIVE.
YOU MUST BE CONNECTED TO ICQ SERVER and ONLINE FOR PROGRAM TO
OPERATE!
Sometimes your program will NOT connect to the ICQ server. As this is a Beta
program, there are still some problems to be resolved, and this is one of
them. But most of the time it works just fine.
Any problems with the directions, please notify me as soon as possible at
