Linus Torvalds, Finnish creator of the Linux operating system, gave the operating system's source code away for free. It's a free operating system which is better than anything Microsoft has made. Linux is usually pronounced "Lih-nucks" by North Americans. (with a soft "i" - like "win bucks")
Some pronounce Linux with a hard "i". (Lye-nux)
The Scandinavian author pronounces it "Lee-nooks".
But no matter whether you call it Lih-nux, Lye-nux, or Lee-nooks, those in the know will usually understand what you mean.

What makes Linux so great?

• Industrial strength power: with Linux you may run many MS Windows, MS DOS, Linux applications, and other software in separate windows, all at the same time.
• If you have a compatible computer with sufficient hardware to run Windows 95 etc., all you need is the hard drive space to be able to use Linux on your system. Linux need not interfere with your current Windows 95/98 or MS DOS setup.
• It's a fully 32 bit protected mode Operating System that provides amazing stability.
• You may choose to boot your Windows, DOS or Linux separately when you start your system. It's your choice - they co-exist transparently.
• Linux has built in compatibility to DOS FAT, Win95 VFAT, and many other file systems.
• Linux supports multi-user extensions found on typical Unix style servers. It has highly stable built in networking such as: TCP/IP for Internet communications, IPX, NETBEUI and AppleTalk compatibility.
• Linux is free (GPL) to anyone who wants to download it. It can also be purchased through retail channels on archive CD's. It fully supports the X Window system and a plethora of X software has been ported to it.
• There are many commercial Linux applications available for complete business solutions. Star Division's "Star Office 5" office suite has a high degree of compatibility with MS Office 97, and imports and exports in many compatible formats. Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux is also available, and both are free for personal use. There are many other software solutions.
• Linux also runs on other hardware, including the Amiga, Atari, DEC Alpha, Apple PowerMac, Sun SPARC equipment, and the 32 bit StrongARM processors.
