Dear Barry,
I have been having my own row with Jonathan Hoffman, LP Candidate for City Council - Tucson on the AZLP-Pima group on the subject of accepting campaign matching funds. Others on this list here have been doing voluminously well at stating their opposition to the image acceptance by a "Libertaria" candidate of such funds does to our cause, so I have kept quiet. In reading this disappointing exchange occurring between you and others on this list I am reminded of a anecdote. Sir Winston Churchill was at a dinner party when the off-color topic of prostitution came up in response to a Times article detailing the arrests of several women the previous day for such activity. In an exchange with a socialite, the former Prime Minister asked her if she would "have sex with him for on million pounds."
After brief contemplation, she replied that for that kind of money why, yes, she would have sex with him.
He then asked her if she would have sex with him for a five pound note.
"Certainly not," she replied indignantly! "What kind of woman do you think I am?!!!!
"We have already established that madam," Churchill replied. "Now, we are negotiating your price."
I have read earlier where you, Barry, have stated that if you qualified for the funds (and were the funds not of sufficiently large amount hence, my discomfort as to where your heart truly lies) you would pickup the check, call a news conference and burn it before all the cameras. If I believed you would do this no matter the amount, then I would support you in your efforts to get the loot. Not only would this be a spectacular news event, you would be given free rein in denouncing the CEA for all the right reasons, a lot of publicity would ensue, and the bureaucrats would be in a quandary over what to do about your act. `We saw him burn it, but we can't spend it... there is no procedure for this... perhaps he would accept another cut check?' (accept it and burn it too). At any rate, if this is what you intend, then I would support you.
But being a libertarian, I would want a civil contract, signed by you along the lines of one of Ricky Duncan's contracts. Take the money and cash the check(s), and you are subject paying any and all AZ registered voters, or anyone who has ever gotten a civil or ciminal citation in Arizona since the CEA went into effect, who ask are entitled to $25 for damages, refusal subject to small claims court. Shall I ask Ricky to draw up a contract?
Powell:-)
