Just thought I'd pass this along. Some of you know that I've been away on business in Ireland for the last couple of weeks. Today I had some free time and went on a tour of Malahide Castle north of Dublin.
The scenery was beautiful both inside and out. I'll try uploading a couple pics to the file area. We were realed with the tales of how the castle was built starting almost a millenium ago. Originally all stone with tiny windows for defense (no glass was available so it was essentially open to the elements), no internal lighting. It was cold and damp and dark but it was defensible for the Talbot family which is why it was built. It was held by the Talbot family for over 800 years, through invasions and fires and wars and barbarians and all the usual run of human tragedy. Over the years, successive generations added elaborate paneled walls, lights, bigger windows with glass coverings, exquisite furniture, etc.
So what happened to the Talbot family, with 800 years of lineage and history building this castle from the very stones in the ground up? They're very much alive and well today, but not living in the castle their ancestors built for them. They're living in Australia of all places. Seems in 1975, they were unable to pay the ever-increasing inheritance tax when one of their family members died. So the Irish government now owns the property and runs tours daily.
This was sad not only for the Talbots, but becuase the general attitude of the tourists was, "See, isn't it great that the government took this castle from the Talbots. Otherwise we wouldn't have been able to see it!"
