Hello,

I am preparing draft a bill that everyone can take to their Congress critter for legislative consideration. It would repeal the current law prohibiting carrying firearms on an aircraft and create a "Sky Marshall's Service" which will be made up of 1 Sky Marshall in Charge per plane and those who volunteer to be a Sky Marshall when they choose to carry a firearm on board. Those could be any combination of passengers and flight crew. You don't want to be a Sky Marshall you don't carry.

Like it or not this fits the rights vs. responsibility aspect for a freedom loving people. With every right there is always at least one responsibility, and in most cases many more responsibilities, that goes with it. At least in the near term, 5 to 10 years, the responsibility of agreeing to be a "voluntary Sky Marshall" would go along with your right to carry that firearm onboard that aircraft.

I will draft the bill with only four conditions: 1) you must sign up to be a volunteer Sky Marshall and go through a background check (probably the same one that FBI agents go through); 2) you must declare the firearm when you pass through gate screening; 2) you must sit in specifically designated seats, that are found to be the most advantageous tactically in the event of an incident; 3) we take our instructions from the "Sky Marshall in Charge"

For now, assuming we could even get something like this considered, the requirement for the background check and to declare the firearm is going to be there no matter what we might want. There are going to be other restrictions I am sure once the critters get a hold of it, if they even consider it.

Once the legislation is drafted, I will put it in PDF format along with a Petition. If you are serious about getting some sort of legislation considered, once you get the text printed out you are going to have to gather several hundred signatures within your legislative district (1000 seems to be that magic number for legiscritters to sit up and take notice).

There have been many on various list who have asked what they can do to foster freedom and in particular gun rights. This is your opportunity to realistically engage the public dialogue and bring it to the Congress. I will be gathering signatures in my district once I finished the proposed legislation.

g'day John Wilde
