Precisely. Pick one controversial issue that Mr. Hoffman wants to push (that is appropriate for the City Council) or an issue that the Council has pushed that is inappropriate and take an outragous, outlandish position (total freedom is always seen as outragous and outlandish) and hammer away. Something that you believe with all your heart and soul, and will not waive from. Here are Mr. Hoffman's core positions (They are all fine, but which one bugs the most Tucsonans?)[http://www.pimalp.org/pages/frameset1.html]. I won't mention what Mr. Hoffman believes City Government should be doing since it has nothing to do with liberty, and reinforces my belief that some "libertarians" just don't have a clue: 1.Second Amendment: Do not in any way infringe on Tucsonans Right to Bear Arms. 2.Donations: It is not the Citys place to decide for its citizens which charities deserve their support. 3.Cruising Ban: Stop assuming young people to be guilty by virtue of being young people. 4.Street Hawkers: These people are willing to work and to take the risks involved. Let them! 5.Smoking Ban: Let owners and patrons decide what happens in their private establishments. What do at least a vocal group of Tucsonian's care about from the above issues, who might show up at a rally you attend? Give them one issue to focus on, and associate with YOU. Create the debate. The Reps and the Dems want to control the debate with their (usually inane) agenda. Find one issue, hammer away and force them to respond to your issue, and their agenda faids away (much to their consternation). The press MUST cover the issue, and they will seek you out as the other side (even if they portray you as a kook, they will protray you - be on message and keep it short). Others who believe in what you are saying will check you out. [Remember the media is NOT your friend! Have catchy newsworthy talking points. When you get interviewed, give your talking points then walk away. They will interview you for an hour if you let them. And when they finally get you to say something silly, that is when THEY conclude the interview, and THAT is what will appear on the news. If you give them just what YOU want, they can either run it or not. Bet on them running it. Remember the media is NOT your friend!] If you speak Spanish, the Cruising issue would be a natural. I have always been repulsed by the overt thuggish behavior of the police and the city official's torwards a weekend activity whose only crime seems to be 'thars too much young people accumulatin' [Bring up the cock fighting issue with the Hispanic community, as a reason to get politically involved now.] Lead a Cruising mob down to city hall when they are meeting and have an obnoxious party around the building omplete with speakers podium and megaphone. Invite the biker clubs (they get picked on by the city too) to bring those wonderfully noisy Harley's and rev the engines. Get arrested for doing nothing more than campaigning (or is campaigning against the rules for someone taking matching funds). Or have a "smoke in" (reach out to business owners - this is not easy) at a resteraunt (preferably one on city property). Have a "bring your gun to the park" picnic (involve Brassroots, GOAz). And even thugh I think Mr. Hoffman's taking matching funds is contemptible, why not become the "street vendor" and solicit minimum campaign donations in those left lane medians (try registering people Libertarian too). No matter what you choose, try to maximize the fun, create a circus atmosphere, and produce the greatest amount of pissing off the city officials as you can without being jerks. Be nice. Have folks with cell phones, bail money, lawyers ready, and video cameras near by. --- In lpaz-Pima@y..., Travis Klein wrote: > 1. The strategy of appearing more like a Republican has not worked.
