I sum up one of the fundamental problems with public 
schools this way:  it is morally wrong to forcibly extract 
money from a person, to fund the teaching of values 
to others which that person finds objectionable.  Unfotunately, this 
is exactly what is going on in public schools.

As far as I know, you find the theory of 
evolution objectionable.  It is certainly within your rights to find 
evolution objectionable.  Therefore, it is morally wrong to tax 
you for the purposes of teaching evolution to kids, wouldn
't you agree?  Unfortunately, that's exactly 
what is going on when you must pay property tax, 
sales tax, and federal income tax.

Now on the other hand, I happen to find prayer 
in schools objectionable.  Therefor it is morally wrong to tax 
me to pay for teaching kids to pray in school.  
That doesn't happen to be going on right now
, but it certainly was going on a few decades ago
.  Not to mention, there are plenty of other things 
that public schools teach today, like socialism, that I 
find objectionable.

Do you see the point?  I have no problem at 
all with prayer taking place in schools so long as it 
isn't funded with MY tax money.  You should 
have no problem at all with evolution being taught in schools 
as long as it isn't funded with YOUR tax 
money.  You and I should each be free to support 
only schools which teach things we agree with.

The problem with public schools is that they are funded with 
taxes, which means either (a) the schools teach 
things that offend some of the taxpayers funding them...meaning 
the offended taxpayers will rightfully object, sue, whine, 
complain, etc. about it or (b) the 
schools teach nothing at all that might offend anyone...ie
. they teach nothing of consequence, no moral values at 
all.  The more we do (b) the worse 
and more useless is the education our kids get, but 
the more we do (a) the more morally wrong 
and offensive our educational system becomes.

It so happens that RIGHT NOW it is primarily Christians who 
are being forced to pay for an educational system that offends 
them.  A few decades ago it was scientists and atheists.  Neither situation is tolerable in a free society.


The only solution to this problem is to eliminate its source
:  the tax funding of education.  All schools should be 
privately funded, and thereby free to teach whatever they want
.  I am fairly confident in saying that under such circumstances 
more schools would promote prayer and religious values than today...
in other words you'd see more of what you 
like and less of what you don't like.  
That's fine with me, because I would also 
be free to support schools that did a proper job of 
teaching the scientific methods of inquiry I agree with.

We don't have endless battles and court cases over 
"prayer in homes" and "prayer in restaurants" 
and "prayer in cars" because homes, restaurants, 
and cars are privately owned and privately funded.  The only 
way to end the battles over "prayer in schools" 
is to make schools privately owned and privately funded as well.
